View Full Version : Welcome to the Womb

Mixerman
November 9th, 2006, 10:18 AM
“After completing my business in the Trough and feeling as though I somehow didn’t belong (when in reality I was the ONLY one who belonged), I headed back for the control room, which I have taken to dubbing the “Womb,” as it is often my only place of true refuge on a session.” –Mixerman from The Daily Adventures of Mixerman

The paint is still drying on the place, and some of our moderators are still working their way into the building, so please excuse the less than perfect grand opening. The fact is, we are very excited about this place, and have some very big plans. We just couldn't wait to open the joint.

At the moment, this place is not much different from many other audio sites, in that there are a variety of forums with moderators presiding over said forums. But we wanted to start this shindig off with something that we’re all familiar with. Writing letters to one another.

Kinda silly isn’t it? I mean, what fucking year is it, anyway?

Now, as much as we love writing letters (and we do love it), we have a hankering for something more. This means more Mixerman Radio Shows, more Slipperman Recording Distorted Guitars from Hell, more articles from me on a variety of topics, more collaborative recording projects, and that’s just for starters.

This is a community run and developed establishment. Many of the people that are here, are the foundation of this creation. The community members are the content providers. And while the Womb will be set up as a business, it’s really a communal labor of love.

That’s all well and good, but what does it mean? All forums are community content driven. That’s the model of a forum!

The forums are only one small part of the “big picture.” I don’t want to go into too much detail right now, but the plan is to provide a plethora of interesting content, music, and resources for those of us who deal (in some manner) with creative side of the music business.

We also see this community as the future arbiters and vetters of good music.

“But how the hell are you going to do that!”

Shhhhhhh.

We have to start with what we have. And what we have is a community—a strong one, overflowing with talented individuals in a variety of capacities. We wish to pull from the individual strengths of the community to build something great. If you would like to be a part of that in some way, let me know. The more people we have pitching in, the better.

As you can see, the vibe of this place is a good one. Our mods and our close friends are exuberant. We intend to keep it that way. We want the place to be informative and entertaining. And how is that different from before?

This time it’s ours.

Enjoy,

Mixerman

Fuck it...the lack of posts from anyone.

The place looks nice, but what I don't understand is why???

I mean, sure people have been growing tired of the MARSH for the last year, but is a change of scenery really going to change attitutes?

I don't know. I just don't know.

Well, that's a good queston. I can tell you that we are committed to make the answer to that question a resounding YES.

Part of the problems in past atempts, has been a lack of direct support combined with an inability of the content providers to implement good ideas.

To me, it is important that this place doesn't become a club. Clubs are exclusionary by nature. We want to be inclusive, and we shall be vigilant to keep it so. It is important to encourage new blood and new activity. We recognize this.

In 5 years of running a forum, I've learned a few things. To me, it's a matter of implementing what works, and preventing what doesn't.

So simple!

I suppose I should insert a smiley here, but you know how I fucking hate them.

I guess some things will never change.

Oh.

So here you guys are.

I wander into the MARSH to see what's new and find scattered beer empties, worn carpet, holes in the drywall, old posters left tacked up, a few pieces of broken furniture, and some unidentified mass of something in the fridge that, frankly, doesn't smell so good.

And a lot of quiet.

So here we are. Thought you could lose me, eh?

Nice place, at first glance. <sniff> ..... ah, outgassing construction material chemicals. Yum.

What does this button do? Oh. Sorry. That does have a breaker, right?

I was thinking that this would be the Musician's Hang, since we tend to have all sorts of topics anyway. But I'm open to whatever people want that makes sense.

I really don't want to do too much segragation. I've found it to be problematic.

Whoa, that was quite a trip!

When I left that other place it was quite a shambles, and on my way out some schmuck told me the place was going to get locked up and remodeled, and therefore my last post was not needed. He told me to just head for the pub, but fuck that, I heard there was a party going on here.

So…….I've been peeking in the windows since yesterday, and finally sobered up enough to find the door. If there is any tequila around, I could use a shot!

I like it here, this is good!

I was gone for a freakin day and I come home to find this?? Gaaaa.

But almost seriously, I already like the vibe of this place right from the gitgo. And having everybody who have collectively gone their own ways returning back in the same hang is also a good thing.

...And there better be a Vodka Konnie-Sewer level somewhere up there, even if it's only for 1 post. I'm getting good at this.

Best of luck with this guys, I mean it.

Mixerman
November 11th, 2006, 12:47 AM
I find it remarkable that I ran a forum there for 5 years, and my "Farewell" post is pulled. So, I will post my "Farewell PSW" here.

To all,

Many of you probably don't realize this, but last September, I celebrated my five-year anniversary of hosting a forum on PSW. Well, okay. Admittedly, I didn't exactly celebrate. I didn't even actually think about it until now. So, why am I mentioning such a non-event? Because I'm leaving my forum here and moving on.

It's kind of weird now that I sit down to write this closing remark. This is the internet. It's ether. Nothing is permanent. There is no Historical Preservation Society to save longstanding internet networks. There are no permanent structures here. Hell, 5 years on the internet is like 100 years in real life. Case and point: Slippy, Aardy, and I sat together recently, had a cigar, and discussed shit that happened AGES ago on the internet. Then we realized we were actually discussing something that happened less than a year ago. That's how it goes on the internet. BAM! Another year gone.

Frankly, for me this isn't a time of sadness. These are virtual walls. It's merely the storage and the documentation of history. Our history. However small that history may be in the relative scheme of a world with a population of 6 billion, to us it's huge. That's because we're us, and so of course we think that. What's bigger than us? Nothing.

I have enjoyed my time here at PSW. I have made many, lifelong friendships. How do I know that? Come on. You know when a friend is going to be a lifelong one. You just know it.

I'm thankful and appreciative of these friends. And my friends are the foundation of this remarkable and diverse community from around the world. And it's the community that makes up this place. The place itself? That's just a design and a storage system. Nothing more. Anyone can do that. Even me. And especially my friends.

And while at first blush, this letter is indicative of an ending, I promise you friends, it also marks a beginning, much like a child's first peaceful, protected months in the fluid warmth of his mother's Womb.

Farewell PSW!

Mixerman

*g* did you sneak a link on the last word?

I'm embarrassed- after we talked I scampered over to the MARSH and wrote a 'where'd everybody go' post in which the first letter of every paragraph spelled out the new Womb address. Then I came back here and immediately saw your note saying not to do that. So I went back and consolidated everything into bigger paragraphs, that ought to do.

Plausibly starting a paragraph with the letter X is hard! :D

I am also a little part of history- I Was There on the phone with him as Mixie saw they'd deleted his farewell post. Be afraid, people, he roared like a wounded Slipperman. I feared.

A fine footnote to history! "Otherwise totally useless, mad scientist ChrisJ lived to a doddering, senile old age recounting the tale of Mixerman's deleted farewell. 'It was like all the air was sucked out of the room into his compendious lungs... and then the unearthly screaming. Somewhere in the distance, a lava lamp shattered...'"

I wouldn't say that. But I was definitely taken aback by the audacity of such a move.

Well I just got out of the hospital from spinal surgery a couple of days ago. the last few months have been hell. More pain than I thought it was possible to feel.
I haven't felt like posting much for a long time at the old forum, but I've been lurking. This place looks like a breath of fresh air. Nice vibe. Good luck with it.
I'll probably continue to lurk for a while though.
Peace to you all, Les

Hey, everyone

I've been looking over at the other place for quite some time now, been learning so much from everyone. However, I'm going to try and post more here.

I'm in Michigan learning from a couple great engineers, and also doing live sound regularly for a 16 voice, 4 horn, and 4 rhythm section vocal jazz ensemble (http://www.wmich.edu/goldcompany for more information on them), along with whatever other sound gigs I pick up.

Nice place this. Cheers to all!

Worked my asses [all 3] off in November and when I finally had time to check in, I discovered that everybody that mattered had moved out and left the mongrel dog to tend to the apartment. Nuthin but a half-eaten Swanson left on the TV tray.

Just like when I was a kid...

Glad I found the new address. That's what I get for working instead of doing stuff I like.

I'm Susie. This is my first time on the forum. I'm told that I've been erased and redone by Ardvark - though I firmly believe this is bullshit. Looking forward to catching up with those I've met in person..... Catch ya..
