I think most of the "interesting" self-assessments are not due to the chutzpah, but more due to the "BigFish-SmallPond" (BFSP) syndrome.

These guys are the heroes and playmakers in their own little sandboxes, and naturally they think they're swinging some big pipe.

Like, for instance, when I was growing up. I realized early-on, that I was the best bassist in my neighborhood. Soon, I realized I was the best bassist in town. Of the three of us, I was clearly head-and-shoulders over those guys. Eventually, I came to believe that I was the best bassist in New Hampshire. There was more than a little accuracy to that.

However, short of the arctic, there are precious few places on earth where the density of competent bassists per capita was lower, than in NH.

When I got to the city, I saw Jaco play, and very quickly experienced that "black hole event horizon" effect...suddenly realizing that, plastic-fantastic as I was, I was not fit to shovel the MANURE of some of these cats.

oh, well. I'm still the best bassist in town.

At this point in your post I was already thinking of Pastorius, Clarke, etc.

I've been thinking, for quite some time, that the whole concept of people ranking themselves as Jedi, gifted, maestro, virtuoso, or whatever (or having some other clueless fuckwit doing the ranking) would be funny if nobody took it seriously.

I haven't visited the signups for quite a while, but I think I recall reading Carlo calling himself an "OK singer".

If Carlo is an "OK singer", then...

"Is someone very slowly running over a crate containing a hound dog, several rats, an invasion of the body snatchers alien, and a few seagulls with a rusty bulldozer, or is that nobby singing"*

The point I'm making, is that there are people who call themselves gifted, geniuses, or whatever who don't have sufficient backround to judge themselves or others, and don't realize where they stand.

For example, Ive been playing guitar for a few decades, and I think I'm talented, but I'm not ignorant enough to call myself gifted, or whatever. Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, Andres Segovia, etc ad infinitum. The same goes for every instrument.

One need go no further than this website to see (hear) what I'm talking about. Take a bow, FredSanford. (http://womb.mixerman.net/showpost.php?p=17326&postcount=48)

You make a valid point, Nobby, and I strongly considered having a "scale of 1-10" system or something...but honestly, no matter WHAT scale is used, the same problem exists. I'm aware that it's not even close to being perfect, nor does the inherent subjectivity of self-rating make anything resembling perfection possible. I take all of this into account when I'm doing team selections, and a lot of it is based on my own perception of one's relative talents as well. It's the nature of the beast.

Fortunately, the results of past CAPEs point largely towards the vast amounts of talent we have in our community, regardless of how people rank themselves, and regardless of my perception of those rankings. The end results and the team chemistry is what matters the most, and I think that's been achieved on a lot more teams than it hasn't.

Yo I'm not invoived with cape cos I'm too busy trying to hold my world together to commit to it...but maybe you should all sign up to sites like these and post your scores for cape. They could prob use a few more judges too.

e.g.

Rate my singing http://singing.eblah.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b=,c=Ratings

or maybe we could do a thread..and score each others playing.

wow...you saw Jaco??

There's lots of stories. I remember one day, at Berklee, when Jaco was in town. This was near his end, well into his downward slide.

Berklee School of Music always has a large number of ensembles playing, in practice rooms, ensemble rooms, class ensembles, what have you, at any given moment during the day.

So, Jaco comes in, on a day when he CLEARLY needed to be "on" his meds, but wasn't. He wandered from ensemble to ensemble, grabbing "whatever" instrument from its utterly shocked and amazed player, and proceeded to blow/rip/shred.

Unfortunately, at this point in his life, he was really sucking ass...just spewing out these meandering 'greatest licks' smashups that had nothing to do with anything, no real attempt or intention to play WITH the other guys in the room. But of course, he was The Jaco, and nobody was interested in stopping him.

It was actually a very sad situation. The entire school was actually sort of 'somber' afterwards, like everyone had the feeling you get when you speak with an advanced alzheimer's sufferer...

But the FIRST time I saw him play, he literally changed my life.

Fair comment, I suppose, but what bar are we setting ourselves against? In the primer, "gifted" is defined as "You are good at it, you know it and all your friends will tell you the same". From hearing previous CAPEs, I think there are a lot of folks in here who belong squarely in that ranking.

Of course if you start waving Jaco or Hendrix around, it's going to show things in a new light, but I don't see there's any shame in acknowledging the results of your own hard work.

I listed myself as a "gifted" singer, with a leaning to maestro this time around... which was probably pushing the line a little bit. But then I got plenty of kudos from people at the Marsh based on Team Progression, so I decided that's about where I'd sit. Yeah ok, it raised my humility-flag a bit, but at the same time I've worked hard to be the vocalist I am today... *shrug*

It's always hard to discuss this stuff without either sounding egomaniacal or falsely modest. Tricky... Based on last year, I'd be inclined to say that there's too much humility, rather than not enough.

Addendum: Just a thought... Once your credentials are established, it's pretty easy to display modesty when everyone knows you're good at it already. ;)

E. Shaun
January 28th, 2007, 03:18 AM
I agree with you there, Groovr.

Incidentally, one of the [many] helpful things Tammikuu imparted to me as a result of her research is that there's really no good way to rate oneself, or one another. It's totally subjective, and always will be, like I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread. Perhaps by CAPE VI, a more definitive and conclusive criteria can be hammered out...but then I have to wonder if that's really necessary, given that the process is largely working as is. I'm too close to it to be objective about it, so...you tell me.

I DO know that I viewed myself as a borderline "gifted" keyboard player in my initial sign up post this year...but when I saw Fulcrum, who I personally think is the best keyboardist I know of from past CAPEs (again, this is totally subjective...and kinda underlines my point about such things) list himself as merely Gifted, I was taken a bit aback. Relatively speaking, I'm MAYBE Skilled when compared to a Gifted Fulcrum. But then again, I have no idea who could possibly be a Maestro if Fulcrum is merely Gifted...

Whatever the case may be, talent level is only about 1/3 of what is taken into consideration when doing team selections... Like Goes and Ola say in their CAPE Primer, attitude and personality are much more important for various reasons. Indeed...I bet if I was judicious enough, a team of "Adequate" folks could be created that rivals the best team of mixed Skilleds, Gifteds and Maestros.

Maybe next time.

Well, if the primer was to be taken literally, i guess i'd need to do "Swedes" too, and upgrade more or less all my rankings by at least one notch... I'm pretty good in my little pond ,-)

I tried to estimate my skills against what the average skill level in the past CAPE:s seems to be - which is much better than the average skill level in my smallish "real life" circles.

Here's how i thought about these:

Adequate = "I could have done something that is vaguely similar to these but probably not nearly as good"

Skilled = "I think i could have done something that's good enough for these"

Gifted = "I could have done better, hell yeah!"

Maestro = "I reallly should teach these guys some basic lessons about how to make music - they suck"
