That's a nice piece of work. I really appreciate the effort to do this comparison, not a trivial effort....for sure.

I liked the modded 69 Marshall the best...but I'm kinda old school.

What surprised me was how similar so many of them sounded. Also surprising was the Les Paul vs the Tele.........a difference yes, but more subtle than I would have thought, at least with the majority of the amps tested.

Thanks again. It was very revealing for me, although not in the way that I had thought it would be.

Agreed. I'll be sticking with my non boutique, unmodded and relatively cheap amps.

I have always found that on their own they all have qualities, its when you mix and match stuff that you get into another territory.

Texture is my fav word at the moment.

I love blending and texturising guitars! I love each and every guitar amp I own for what it is. Those little quirks that people often try to iron out are what makes an amp INTERESTING.

However, in this 'shootout', many of the modern high gainers (a few of which I know very well and have extensively recorded) all seem to have a weird lumpy lower midrange...

Yeah it was fun. I liked the modded Marshalls the best. We started out with 6 or 7 amps before we got to my Dave Friedman modded Super Tremolo and as soon as I plugged it in and hit the first chord you could hear a gasp in the room, it just sounded right. I also dug the VH4, actually bought one after the shootout and the 2 channel Dual Rec. The modded Sovtek sounded great and was fun to play. The '69 Jose Plexi was crazy bright, the track you hear had the treble and presence on zero, that sucker sounded like 'Unchained'. Great day!
