Oh crap, a software troubleshoot.

Leave This Thread (http://womb.mixerman.net/forumdisplay.php?f=13)

Phew, okay. I'm gonna post this at the 'Logic Pro Help' forum I discovered through the 'learning logic' thread but thought you guys may also have come across this.

The logic express which is part of my location recording setup seems to have a problem with targeting audio files. It's been doing it for more than 6 months, not following any important change or anything - it just started. Basically I finish a tracking day and close the session file with regions scattered around everywhere, thinking I'll clean it up the day after. When I come to open the next day all of the regions are in the right place, but some are sourcing the incorrect audio files! So I'll have the region which is meant to contain the vocal track now containing a random hi-hat part. This happens often although I try and avoid it by merging my files and saving as project to a new folder which contains only those merged files before I shut down the session file. Occassionally there are still problems but if I do this I'm pretty safe.

It's weird because all my files are saving to the right place and even if they weren't, it shouldn't be an issue. This is much more suitable for a logic help forum but wanted to give it a shot in case anyone here knows anything about how logic links its regions to audio files, how I can use the audio window to stop this happening, or anything else.

Please take the disclaimer at the start of the thread as reason not to shoot me.

By any chance, do you have more than one audio file with the same name? If so, this is the first problem. I'm not up on my Logic Express (I use Pro), but if you are able to save your work as a project, then I strongly recommend doing a Save As Project. This way, your audio files will be consolidated in one area and your audio file path will be set for each project to point in its own project.

Thanks for the post. I use a logic pro rig as well but its not actually of my ownership.. I always save as project but sometimes problems arise where projects separated by only a few folders have files within them with the same name etc.

Something I never got was how the hell files are given a name (Express, Pro, I'm sure it's the same). My procedure is to start each new song with its own project using file-->new. When I look at the stuff I recorded it has named like audio recording03, audio recording89 and other completely random numbers - I'm thinking if I use 'set record path' to use a new text name for each song instead of 'audio recording' for everything it'll stop assigning random numbers and go 1,2,3...

if you have the mess already, go to the audio window ( not the edit audio, the window where you can see all the audio files being used ). select them all and MOVE em to the desired folder.
all file references should change. CAREFUL !!! if you have more sessions that use those audio files, the others will show that they cant find the audio and you have to search for them.

providing this is real easy, you just have to set the audio path before you start recording.

hope that helps ?

Aside from the Save As Project already mentioned by Jord, you may also wanna check the box in the project setup that tells Logic to name the audio files by the track names (assuming of course you baptize your tracks in the environment/arrangement).

Logic should by default warn you if it finds the same file names in different locations.

Never used that checkbox before. Thanks very much, I'll definitely try it...
