Ok so after finishing tracking and getting the MixShootOut happening I need to work on MY mixing !, one of my main areas of lack of mix is the drums. ( well vox too but we'll get to that later , I did listen to Slippy on the drums but NO AUDIO ??? at least the music part ?? )
Anyhow what tips /tricks do you guys have for us unknowledgables ? Eq , FX on kik , on snare etc. smashing ovrhds etc. ??

PS: this is assuming I have decent sources ( I try to use what I have, at times I will use samples if needed although my sample libray is limited right now to Kennys !!! )

You'll need a BIG freakin' compressor.
You're welcome.

I think I'll just go back to bed now.

Now put them to work.
Compress the crap out of the room signal and mix it with an uncompressed room signal (to taste). That should increase the "size" of drums. Another thing that I do at times is compress the kick, snare and toms with about 17 - 34ms of attack and about 60 - 180ms release (YMMV on both settings) and mix those in. That should more or less get in your face.

Thanks Jord that was the kind of info I was looking for !!! , I was listening to a Perfect circle cut and the snare and kik were HUGH ! trying to work towards that sound ( sounded like there was a delay and short tail verb on the snare ?? )
Anyhow thanks for the input !!!

Who's HUGH??
For all I know, it could be a bit of gated verb (I haven't heard Perfect Circle, so I have no authority on that whatsoever :D). However, massive compression sometimes yields similar effects. Perhaps it's just me, but I tend to use verbs when I want to define a bit of space. I'd rather go in-yer-face with a big freakin' compressor. It's all a matter of taste, I guess.

Which track?
Andy Wallace mixed their stuff I believe... so maybe search for some of his techniques?

And if anyone knows of other interviews with Andy, post them!

Don't know for other interviews, but you can search for articles on staind and SOAD records that he mixed in mix. Some info there.
One thing I noticed is that Andy Wallae have kick and snare (kick especially) very loud usually and manages not to steal the place for other instruments, seems like short sustain helps.
Anyways)
More AW info would be nice!

If the drums are big, something/everything else has to be small :)

1 thing I remember about Mer De Noms interviews, they said that they pumped some of Josh Freeze's drums thru the PA behind him while tracking. Though. Me thinks. It was Josh Freeze, not the PA.

No idea about Mer de Noms, but that's a technique David Bottrill used on Tool's Aenima.

Have you tried doing parallel compression?; Distortion on the kick works good sometimes too.
btw Dion, that article is great!

I agree completely.
Those are some great articles, I have yet to try the PA trick, but I remember reading an article about Aerosmith doing the same, and I've wanted to try that ever since.
Parallel compression is my new best friend. I like to mult the room mics, smash one pair and emphasize the mid to lower frequencies on them, then HPF the unsmashed pair and use them mostly to add ambience and room compression for the cymbals.
I've also been getting much more satisfying kick sounds in a much shorter time since I started using an NS-10 speaker on the outside of the kick. Prior to building a "sub-kick" I got basically all my bass drum sound from a Beta 52 inside the kick, tweaking the EQ and comp.
Now that I use two mics, I do something similar to the room mics. I'll HPF the mic inside the kick (somewhere around 150 - 400 Hz) and emphasize the content around 3k and up, then use the smashed, bass heavy signal from the speaker for all of my LF content.
In both situations, you have one extremely compressed signal and one completely uncompressed signal, which allows you to balance them to taste. I find this preferable to trying to determine the perfect amount of EQ and compression on one source, since my favorite EQ is usually a correctly placed mic with no EQ.
Of course if you're looking for "big" drum sounds similar to what you hear on the radio, I'd say sample replacement is your friend.
I know a great drum sample CD for just that thing, but since I profit from sales of said CD, and that would be considered spam, send me a PM if you want the link.

Maybe I should try my Event Bas 20/20's as a sub ??? worth a shot to test it I guess , The sound I was refering to sounded more like FX than mic's ( and compressed to hell ) maybe a short delay into a verb ???

Wouldn't suggest that. You'll need a passive speaker box to try the subkick idea.
