i have no shame, i'm willing to start it. if you have a picture of yourself or your band playing live (or running sound or whatnot), post them here.
groupie pics especially welcome.
workbox pictures accepted.
let's keep it to a couple pictures each for starters, unless they are groupie pics which shall always be welcome in any quantity. alright, i'll start. i never have a real camera with me at work, so i don't have any ansel adams quality works to add. and i work with famous people regularly enough, but i do not take photos with them or get autographs from them. ever. that's fan bullshit and i'm not aligning myself with that. but here are a couple of pics just for fun. i expect you guys to do even better than this...
one is me at my house gig, the next is from the theatre i used to A1 at, and last one is me at the house venue during a Duran Duran gig

Truth be told, I take a lot of pics of our gigs, but most of the time its of the stage, our configuration w.r.t other mobiles, the talent. And then, when I'm actually behind the console and working (believe it or not, we do actually get some work done with the truck), its usually inshow and there's no one to take my pic...
So, as a result, this is me taking pictures of some of our friends who choose to darken the threshold of the mobile...

The ol' Bubble--bane of the Church musician. I hate it, especially since I work very hard to be able to deliver the goods at any dynamic.
The place we were playing is a large gym, and they were recording the show.

i think every worship music band i've ever seen has used clearsonic for the drummer. the last one i -mixed- needed something, anything, to reduce the sounds of the drums in relation to everything else.
Johnny
November 10th, 2006, 08:24 PM
Yeah. Far too many drummers in that arena are either garage band guys who volunteered or kids who came up playing drums in the youth band by default. Few have the basic skills necessary to play at a low dynamic with good time and feel. The same is true for a lot of club drummers, too, but they're rarely called upon to reign it in.
What I hate about the Bubble is that when lights are up, it's a mirror. The last thing I wanna look at when I'm playing is me.

David Allen tweaked a buddy's BF Fender Concert, re-housed in a 2-10" cab loaded with JBL's. It's now my benchmark for Fender clean tone. Absolutely 3-D... I didn't miss reverb, distortion, compression or chorus. The tone was stunning. Good choice in amps, there, Swafford.
To keep this kinda on topic, here's a grainy shot of my Tele at an off-the-cuff Ohio State Buckeyes party. It's also my daughters' stage debut. The Tele is a '66 garage-sale find, fitted with a Glaser B-bender.

I can do that because I run four mixes from FOH, unless the band mixes their own IEs with a splitter. ( Two bands do this. )
I can also do this because I absolutely refuse to touch a drop when I'm mixing.
Nada.
Alcohol literally affects the way in which your ears perceive HF and at 1:00 A.M., I still know how it sounds, even if the patrons do not.
I do have a free and endless tab, however and at 1:02, I am a drinking mofo. :)
The band in that pic is actually a six-piece Motown band.
How they fit onstage, I'll never know...

How do you manage to keep focused with sooo many temptations...within arms reach...
Gaa.....
:)
well, i never drink while working, or use any other things that would throw me off my game. i suppose having a beer at a bar gig isn't bad. i really take my job seriously, and i think that some of the local bar guys are a little too casual about their drinking on the jobs. that's part of why their mixes sound like shit.

Yep, and volume also.
Which is why the great temptation when mixing and drinking is to turn it up louder.
Alcohol + kilowatts = a dangerous mix

I think the bigger problem is when they are working while drinking!

I also never drink while working. In my club days, I used to argue that the bar staff couldn't drink on the job, why should we? My suggested compromise was a "no drinking until the last set" rule. I figured the singer (who was the problem) couldn't get drunk enough to ruin the show in that amount of time. Usually, that was true.

We're definitely a band with a look perfect for radio...
A tux gig (playing for 600 Red Hat Society ladies, who were partying their asses off!), me on bass (in all the pictures, actually):

Ok.
I don't know how long this'll stay up, but technically speaking it is a shot of me at a typical live gig.
Maybe someone can apply an appropriately placed bandaid.

Keep up the good work.

Not a pic. It's a video of a show from my house gig (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkLT5KStuKk), from three weeks ago.
The audio is utter ass, but in my defense, I didn't have any way into the cam from the desk.
What you hear is a 1/4" diaphragm on a betacam mic getting the shit compressed out of it while it tapes from the booth and tries to get over the noise floor of 450 drunk punters between me and the small stage, behind the bar.
If turn the audio off it's probably better :)
This is a night at the office, though.
Enjoy if you can.

Dunno, they were on the Little Steven's Garage Tour and were obligated to do two numbers with us. The woman who was doing sound was my fave of the bunch. British, hot and ballsy.

It's his lyric cheat sheets. What can I say? In addition to being a drummer in another band he's also a High School sports teacher, so the drain on his IQ is massive :D
I'm gonna have to give 'em the "No music stands on stage 'cos it looks like arse and anyhow we're a rock band not a symphony orchestra" talk at some point.

Just to pre-warn you, he may come back with the "Michael Stipe from REM does it" argument...
Oh wait, Stipe's an idiot also.

Hell, even Sinatra leaned on a teleprompter for a while once it became economically feasible.
The difference being that he was in his early 80s by the time he needed one.
