OK, so I've been thinking about mixes that I love.
And in all honesty, some of them are technically terrible.
Take Fugazi's 13 Songs. Great album, and I can't imagine it any other way. I mean, I can, but I don't think it would benefit from 'better' production, or a modern mix with drum samples, etc.
So, my question is about flava. Character.
I think that learning all of the tricks to get a mix sounding smooth and big and clear are important. But what's REALLY important is capturing the character of the band. But in this commercial milieu we have to keep in mind that it needs to 'work' on the radio, etc.
So I think of Song 2, by Blur. Obviously a big hit. But not a typical 'rock' mix by a long shot.
I think that a good starting point is to listen to a mix and ask whether it sounds like something else. And if it does, change it!
Trying to match the stuff on the radio is squeezing the art out of this. We should try to surpass what's out there. We should do things that haven't been done before.
If you can convince the band to go for it, that is...
And the label, etc...
Just my $.02:Confused:
