Heyo.
Looks like we moved.
OK.
Doc and Smileyblue have uploaded all the contents of the old shit from RecPit Archive and MARSH and we also got the newest installment ready to rock as soon as Doc gets back here to put the "guide tones" on the audio snippets.
The gremlins here at the Womb are gonna take care of the rest...
OR WE'RE GONNA FUCKING KILL THEM.
HOHOHO.
Ahh me,
Sorry about the delays and bullshit. It's been chaos here at my shop for months.
Chaos.
Anyhoo.
Let the games resume.

Your dedication to educate via the internot without charging you normal daily rate is indeed a blesssing...
One thing I think would be ultra nifty would be to have guest post a guitar riff and then have it's contents analyzed as far as EQ-ability, Fuzz-useability, and other characteristics that may help or hinder the actual usage.
What about Distorted bass? Wink

heh heh I wasn't going to say that.... but its a matter of public record... Evil! I don't actually share the opinion that your playing was all that bad..
However...
I suck at guitar and it makes me a big flaming hypocrit for even saying that.
I will say that techniques are often specific to a genre and while you may now do death metal to a drummers satisfaction that you probably excel as a player in a different genre.
I've explored pretty much every genre and I suck at all of them...

Nah dude, it's all good. At the time of playing I clearly thought I was better than I actually was... a few years before I used to play for about 4 hours a day pretty religiously.

Yeah me too, however 'all's well that ends swell' - great resource!
A point of note tho'
Could there be some instruction about syncing up the running commentary narratives with the Guitar EQ snippet changes - or do I just drop them into logic and line them up from the start?
I remember Slipperman you saying something like, after you here the beep, line up the audio now........

OK. Doc Smith aka 'overeasy' was the chap responsible for EVERYTHING that has happened in the 'shift of venue/re-organization/consolidation' of all the text and audio material that was the sum total of my input to the thread over the years.
He is often here at my shop on Friday nights...
And, of course...
Is nowhere to be found this evening.
He apperantly called to say he is not back until Wednesday night.
Soooooo...
He will be posting instructions VERY SOON regarding WTF is going on with the latest installment, how the mp3's line up for the audio snippets.... Blah, blah, blah. Yada, Yada, Yada.
We still have a "biggenation" session to rock and I will get going on that as soon as the current spate of paying work dries up.
Which it certainly will.
Because I need it to continue.
So it won't.
Continue.
It will cease.
Then I will be FUCKED.
But...
I WILL be able to finish this disaster.
Then I gotta figure out...
WHAT'S NEXT?
Any suggestions?

Must have embiggination info.
Is there more to it than slapping a IKmultisomethingorother and an L3 on the "virtual" 2 bus and hoping for the best?
I've got to believe there is.
Will there be info on how running your mix through a "real" Amek versus a hot-rodded TAC may differ?
Is there an established age at which rockin' the long hair and goatee thing becomes sadly amusing?
Is there any chance that an approaching-middle-age newbie AE will ever be able to "hook up" with Scarlett Johansen?
I need answers, dammit!
ANSWERS!!!!!
I welcome any input whatsoever, but at this moment the SJ question is of the highest priority.
Second in line in the info priority...
If you feel that a track needs "grit", do you peg the bitch while tracking or do you print it clean and then goose the gain back through the console at mix time?

Long time listener, first time caller...
Slippy, I would very much appreciate if you could share your thoughts and views from previous experience/success/pain/anguish on any of the following subjects.
* Harmony Guitars (solo lines a la Thin Lizzy):
The pros and cons of using the same or different guitars, pickups, amps, cabs, etc. Dynamics, panning, eq.
* Guitar solo's:
Making space in the mix through amplitude, eq, sidechaining, etc.
* Wah pedals:
Any special treatment needed due to the nature of the sweeping effect.
* Double tracking:
Real double tracking and multiple versions of a single track. Complimentary eq'ing, phase summing/cancelling.
* Psychoacoustics: (No, not Willy Nelson on speed.)
The little things that are perhaps not so obvious to the naked ear but become evident when they're A/B'd in and out of the mix, and are quite often the glue that holds the track together.
* Dirty noise:
Dealing with tracks that contain hum, pops, crackles, fizz, chainsaws, screaming wives, etc.
My apologies if you have covered or touched upon any of this stuff previously, but I've had amnesia for as long as I can remember.
P.S. A big thank you to you Slippy, for all the time, effort, experience, wisdom and entertainment you have already provided in this epic. Some magicians like to keep their tricks of the trade a closely guarded secret.
I tip my hat to you, sir.
Cheers,

I knew I'd forgotten to ask something...
*Song key (and key changes):
For example, if a song is in the key of A is there more focus or treatment of the natural harmonic frequencies (110Hz, 220hz, 440Hz, etc) in regards to eq'ing and, if so, does that focus change if there is a key change?
Cheers,
Homebrew.

Reference material. Do you use any/what do you use? HOW do you use it? Lots of A/Bing during mix or just at the end for finishing touches or what? What (if anything) should one IGNORE about reference material?
I'm pretty clueless. I think I tend to use it as a general guide to get the overall mix in the ballpark in terms of EQ, and I find myself looking for a snare sound to 'aim for' occasionally, but outside that I ain't got a donkey.
Also is there anything else floating around on the internet that you would suggest is 'good reading material' for all those hours spent excreting human waste into a white porcelain tannoy horn?

Yeah, I heard that one. I've been monitoring in mono for the last few months now, and actually making major decisions based on what I hear on that little speaker. It's amazing how much it's improved my mixes.

So, I've been a lurker here and on the previous locations of the thread for some time now, and I'd like to ask a question. It may be a boring question for some but wtf I 'm the one asking.
Mr. Slipperman, on the desk layout narrative and on other occasions you have talked about parallel compression on the guitars, or drums or whatever. I know what parallel compression is, that's not what I want to know; what I want to know is: Do you set up a pair of tracks for say the guitars and then a different pair for the drums? or maybe just one pair where you go around adding stuff to find something interesting?
I have tried both and commonly use different track pairs for different elements of the mix. What do you use?
Of course if someone else has something to say about this let's hear it.

Yeah guys,
first of all, thanks for uploading this and all. I've been waiting for I don't remember how long since the last one. but...
I'm starting to think Slippy made a deal with Ikea cause i'm trying to puzzle this thing together in my little daw here and I'm missing some parts (see the previous post) and I have some other parts that don't fit anywhere (part1.6 and 1.8... I think)(I don't know, maybe I'll just blame my own stupidity... or better: I'll blame my PT LE).
But like all Ikea furniture, maybe I should've just RTFM. Does anyone have one? I threw mine away when I opened the box. I hope Slipperman is having as much trouble assembling his

Dear Slippy,
hope you're doing fine and things work out well for you :-)
I read through your "BMF"-Article with great interest and count ourselves damn lucky to get this kind of information from you. Looks like a HELL of a typing work! Thank you so much.
Without taking too much of your time a short question if you don't mind: I came across these notes and tried my best to figure it out. Does the "x (2)" refer to a second take (i.e. of 15+16) or that the compressor has been double used in chain (i.e. on track 15). It is my understanding that (within a double miced single take) the compressor has been used just only one channel and left other channel go raw into the desk (i.e. 16+20.). Please correct me if I am wrong.
15.) Gtr1a - AKG-D12e/Desk/TLA C1 x (2)
16.) Gtr1b - SM57/Desk
19.) Gtr3a - D112/Desk/DL241 x (2)
20.) Gtr3b - AT25/Desk
Many thanks in advance and regards to fellow board members, too.
Thank you,
Steven
