thought i'd just toss this out as a general thread. kind of gear-ish, and looking mostly at folks who have been behind a lot of different speakers. i wouldn't be surprised to mostly hear folks chime in on decent current line arrays, and don't expect prism systems to make the current hot list! anyway, what do you like?

If I may chime in on so lofty a subject.

Like:

EAW stuff, KF, etc...
Turbo TMS and Flashlights
EV MT4 Manifold system. (I miss those boxes)
Meyer just rocks my world.

Do not like:

X -Arrays (brittle)
ShowCo Prism (Even more brittle)

I have preferences for club type stuff, too, but.. well.. it's just club stuff, I guess.

I havent used much but stuff thats rocking my little world are the eliminator series the martin w8 that i heard in our venue and the custom rig that was pieced together using old peavey boxes with PD drivers.

Things im not liking : Logic ,

EV MT4 Manifold system. (I miss those boxes)

Ah the MT4's.

Warm fuzzy memories.

Until I remember having to mix on 'em.

Then the hate comes.

On the other hand, I mixed for years on MT's - mostly the 2's though. Thank god for DSP's - all that parametric was needed to make those fuckers sound good. Still a great club rock rig.

My favourites?

-D&B Q1 (sounds great and dude...it weighs 45 fucking pounds!)

-V-DOSC. For certain venues and certain styles of musics, I also absolutely love the ARC's.

Flashlight.

Fer subs:

-d&B B2

- EAW SB1000

-Not sure what the name is, but the big 21" scoop that went with the flashlights. It's old school, but man did it feel good.

-L'Acoustics SB218 (I was a firm believer in horn-loaded subs til I started mixin on these)

Dislike with passion:

MackieEAW 730's

Anything Vertec. Stab me in the eye with a moose cock.

Wedges:

I love 12's. So much easier to keep flat and get a smooth sounding vocal. I adore EV's XW12, though I haven't heard the new version with the bigger horn driver.

Yeah, if it says Meyer on it, I'm about 99.9% sure to like it. A lot.

I've also done some gigs in the last few years with a Nexo Geo S line array that doesn't suck at all. Quite nice, actually. Shockingly nice for boxes which weight like 30 pounds or something stupidly low like that.

i like the v-dosc system real well, and vertek. i know there is the next generation of line array after the v-dosc, but i haven't heard it yet.

i was not too impressed with the nexo's that came through my place, and some other names like adamson were just kind of average.

mt4's were here real recently and all i can say is that they are heavy and seem to be for clubs. i've had good experiences with xarray, so i'm ok with them. if i never have to put together another prism system that will be just fine.

plenty of eaw and meyer on touring broadway, it's what i've come to expect. they are all cool.

Wow, someone's traveling with MT4's??

What kind of act?

not travelling with, they hired a low-end local production company for a one off. this company looks better suited for bars than theatres. just a cheapie outfit with some well worn kit, including mt4's that they've been using as long as i can recall. it's all they have as far as i know. every once in a while low budget acts will hire them out for a one off and they come through my place.

Ditto to V-Dosc.
Sounds great in almost every venue around here.
Especially outside it seems to put a lot of others to shame.

BUT, there is one venue here that it doesn't seem to
work in. Even smaller, budget systems seem to sound
better in there.

Go figure.

I dont really like the older turbosound tfl/tfs bins.
Whether i was mixing on them, or someone else, the
mid range always seemed 'cluttered'...
Maybe i didn't work hard enough.
Or i suck.
It's probably both.

Yeah, occasionally there's venues like that. I find most often that they're theaters actually...especially those with closer, steeper balconies.

There's one around here that just HATES V-DOSC. I've used dv's, Q1's, and ARC's in there though...much improved.

I like:

Almost anything with Adamson written on it. I work with Y10 a lot and I love it to bits. And the Spectrix's rigging system kicks ass.

(Powered) Meyer...if it's not sat next to an Adamson box. Leave the unpowered stuff at the warehouse though. UPA1Ps are the dog's gonads.

The ridiculous 15" wedges we designed and had built elsewhere. Loud is not a strong enough word. Punchier than Mike Tyson in a bad mood.

EAW SB1000s and L Acoustics SB218s. The SB1000s just kick the fook out of most things though...I'm yet to hear the Adamson T21, that may change my mind. It looks like a raging monster on the surface.

Martin WSXs on a good day can be nice.

ASS118 scoop bins...because you can utterly cook them and they'll take it like a man and ask for more. I spent two days at Notting Hill Carnival driving a powersoft K10 into 4 of these at full whack, and they survived. That's silly power. They DO sound like cock and balls tho...

Concentric 12" wedges...we made 6 of them and want to make more but Beyma don't make the drivers any more :\

I'm told that I'd love a horn loaded 15" top box, but I don't think I've ever had the pleasure...

I don't like:

Nexo Geo T. Or the PS series. Broken Glass.

Meyer M2D...purely because of the rigging. Fiddlier than an Irish folk band. Sounds nice, but I'm buggered if I'm carrying that flying frame around and spending 3 years getting a hang off the deck.

EV MT2s. Coulda been the room I had, but they sounded holier than a man with long hair and a beard wearing a white cloth.

Meyer PSW-2s. What headroom? Tickle the damned things and they fart and limit like crazy.

Anything with DAS written on it.

Martin W2s when run passive.

the first JBL Eons...designed to self destruct.

DV-DOSC. Louder than god, but where's the body?

Arcs - ouch. I've never mixed on them though, so it coulda been user error/incompetence...

Forget the name of it - the big EAW sub with the 2 x 12" (?) and immense folded horn.

Bose.

Big boxes made by cheap companies...the smaller stuff can sound bearable on a good day, but big & cheap just doesn't seem to work.

All the old homemade crap I used to have to deal with at work. Good riddance.

Pretty much a description of the room i was talking about.
