In the interest of doing a little decorating around here and the uncontrollable desire to see some nice flesh to counteract the smell of sweaty socks, I propose the resurrection of: The Rock Chicks Thread.

I forgot about this one over at the...um...er...'other place', so try this one on for size: Saraya...not bad music either if your tastes run to overproduced, late 80's 'bitch rock'.

Joan Osbourne now with Bob Weir's Ratdog:

For what it's worth, Joan has a new album coming out on Tuesday, and though she is calling it her "country" album, it really isn't. What I've heard from it (on her myspace page, and the two nights she rocked the Minnesota State Fair) is really fucking good.

Then again, I'd listen to her clearing her throat, so I may not be the best judge of her material.

So the end of the night as we are all walking out the back door..Her buss was parked in the alley.. I saw Jill Sobule at the Hatch Shell in Boston my first weekend at Berklee. She was opening up for (I think) Liz Phair, and had nothing more than her own voice and her little Vagabond Travel Gutiar (http://www.stringsmith.com/vagabond/intro.htm), and she completely blew me away. Her second album (Jill Sobule) is one of my all time favorite albums, including possibily the single best first line of a song I've ever heard ("He was pulling deep on a cigarette, billows of smoke pouring out of him like freighter hit by a torpedo before the fire reaches the hole" - from Couple on the Street). Yes, I have a deep love in my heart for Jill Sobule. Her ballads are much better than her novelty songs, but I like the novelty stuff too.

D'arcy Wretsky was the first Pumpkins bassist, then Melissa Auf Der Maur for the final tour. David Pajo was briefly on bass in Zwan before Paz Lenchantin joined. Eric Avery was slated to join the new incarnation of the Pumpkins but there were creative differences, so he hired Ginger Reyes.

Billy's bands before SP (The Marked, Hexen, Coat of Eyes) all had male bassists.

Wow that shocks me. I've gotten the vibe over the years you and I have a pretty big intersection of musical tastes. And I just LOVE her voice and the fact she does NOTHING to get in her own way.

Guess it goes to show you just how subjective singing really is.
All the pitch, power ( not that she really belts ever ) and control,
mean nothing if you just don't like the flava

But my opinion should probably discounted as I love Shakira as well

I probably shouldn't make any sweeping pronouncements after hearing only one song, but in that one song Ms Feist sounded uncomfortably like Björk without the accent, and I'm afraid I didn't even finish the song.

Given that our tastes do intersect quite a lot though, I'm willing to try again with something else.

Hell, it took me a while to "get" Neil Young and Bob Dylan, too-- not that I'm putting her on the same pedestal, but she's in that category of vocalists who need to be taken on their own terms.

Oh The Björk thing! Well yeah she does go there a bit. I like Björk a lot too but there are days when sometimes maybe because of the lunar cycle or some other cosmic thing, her "magic spell" will suddenly wear off and part of me will go "Now really that's just dreadful innit?"

So, I think I can hear what you're hearing when she doesn't get it done for you. But she probably is worth a few more attempts.
