View Full Version : Is this stupid or way cool?

Haven't started mixing yet. Everything needs editing etc. Long way to go. I only have one question;
Is the guitar cool or crap? Too 70's phase abused? Too 80's chorus abused? I'm not worried whether it's fashionable or not, I don't think it is, just whether it sounds cool or not.
And do you think there's any hope of it not stomping the vocals?
I ran it through a Leslie 145. At first I tried to ease up on the depth with mic placement but then it just went way 80's, and the tone went fer shit too.
So what do ya figure? Go straight Marshall and 4-12, or keep the Leslie?
Thanks guys,
Cos.

It's cool...but...
If it's going to be the primary guitar sound running from soup to nuts in the track, I reckon I'd start getting real bored with it.
However, as an occasional highlight - hell yeah.
:D

I love the leslie guitar. But I think I'd ditch it, given the part, the song, and the fact that you have a B3 in there. It might be cool in a bridge, or a break down. And I don't know that I'd have it panning across the field in this particular song. If I were to use it, I'd use it in conjunction with a straight guitar, but I wouldn't use the SAME guitar straight. Rather, I'd keep the one I had, then record another pass with the guitar player listening to the Leslie as he played it.

Thanx Mixerman! I hadn't really looked at this thread in a while, and funnily enough that's basically what I already did. I kept the crazy pan for the lone guitar intro, then added another straight guitar and pulled the pan back when the vox kicked in. It seemed to blend in without losing the leslie effect too abruptly.
You suggesting the same sorta thing gives me hope.
In a few weeks I hope to be mixing this albatross so I'll be back.
