I've used it once or twice, seriously considering getting one of my own. It's a great-sounding pedal.

thanks, ya I am pretty excite about it, the only distortion pedal I kept over the past 5 years is my Maxon SD-9 which works chained with nearly every other OD and Dist. pedal out there and it doesn't impart any strange character to the signal or drastic shelving EQ etc. I had a vintage block letter MXR Distortion + which was quite transparent but for some reason I sold it... I never tried the script version -which is the first model. Other guitarists still urge me to check it out saying it is much better.... I don't know.. not real motivated to find out anytime soon.

I might RE-buy the hotcake one day. Its overdrive at certain settings very typical in an OD pedal, but it can be set to be quite transparent.

The cool thing about it, at least the one I owned before, cranking the drive to max made my strat's bridge single coil sound like I had a humbucker into a SD-9! I thought that was cool.... back the drive off a bit and sounded like a single coil into a OD pedal again..

The clip sounds pretty good, if a bit harsh. Although, I don't think clips are a good way of comparing any type of musical gear. Also, I haven't been able to find a pedal that I liked enough to be the basis of my distorted tone in years. I'd rather get an amp (or a preamp/power amp combo) that sounds heavy as is, and maybe goose it a bit with a booster or OD.

The Hotcake is quite unique in my opinion and does some very cool sounds I haven't heard anywhere else.

It's one of the few OD pedals I like to use with a little amp distortion, it "chokes" the tone in a way reminiscent of older fuzz pedals.

I love the way the eyes in the skull glow red when the distortion is turned on

I own a custom version of one of these (the customization being that on mine the eq is switchable):

And I would recommend.

N.B. I am not by any stretch of the imagination a metal guitarist... so not a recommendation for metal guitar per se. But an awesome distortion/overdrive tone... it certainly makes me happy.

Have you tried the Prunes & Custard? I'm not sure that I could justify it...but I want it!
