Phone call here today.

Slipperman: Hello, Slipperian House of Sonic Decimation.

Caller: Hi. I'm calling for some information on your services.

Slipperman: Sure, what can I tell you about?

Caller: Well... I really only have ONE question...

Slipperman: Shoot.

Caller: Do you download music to mp3?

Slipperman: (palpable pause as alternate universe emerges in cranium) Errr... I'm not sure I understand the question... We record bands and music here.

Caller: Yes, OK, but do you DOWNLOAD music to mp3...

Slipperman: Wait, I'm kinda confused... We record music and the music can be downloaded on mp3 format if that is one of the things you would require... Is that it?

Caller: Oh. Good. But is the download free?

Slipperman: Wait... Uhm... If you recorded here and wanted to download an mp3 from our server it would certainly not be something that you were charged for.

Caller: Oh... But I don't record... I don't play anything... I just wanted to know if I could download music from your studio for free?

Slipperman: Oh... Like Napster.

Caller: Yeah! Like Limewire!!

Slipperman: I got a dialtone you can have right now. Check it out. *Slams down phone receiver*

Pretty much verbatim "rate call" from about 5 minutes ago.

I quit.

I fucking quit.

Don't know whether to laugh, cry, shit or go blind.

My wife insisted I post it here, so there ya have it.

I wish.

I really do.

This was a young woman with some sort of fairly thick accent. Possibly Middle-Eastern as her name was Alleah.

I still have her phone number on the caller ID, which I'm considering having my entire touring client list post on every mens room stall wall worldwide.

I also have the digital answering machine message she left when she called the FIRST time, which I wasn't going to return, as she sounded like a total fukwit.

I gotta go check it out.

Might be something hilarious to post there.

Thought 1 - "I want to get music for free"

Thought 2 - ???(insert impossible thought process here)???

Thought 3 - "Based on (insert Thought 2), it is clear that the only solution is for me to call a random recording studio in order to facilitate this need for free music"

Dave Perry

Yea, I agree with the above. To me it's not the audacity, it's the surreal disconnect from reality that makes this one for the annals of truly inexplicable human behavior.

Maybe she just got bored with almost every piece of recorded music in history being available via Limewire, et. al., and decided it was time to "feel the pulse of the street" with some very newly minted, hot off the presses pirated downloads, opting to bypass most of the rest of the music industry and go straight for a fairly well known New Jersey recording studio, looking for handouts.

Other than complete insanity (well, actually in addition to complete insanity), that's about the only explanation I can think of.

Slipperman, I don't know when exactly the notice was posted on Limewire and the server plugs were yanked, but if this call coincided with that fateful day, then I think I may have figured out what must have happened. You've probably already thought of this, but here is, I think, how the reasoning (to use that term loosely) went behind these two strange phone calls you got:

1. English speaking woman of Middle Eastern descent wakes up one morning and logs onto Limewire, her go-to (and only) source for free (duh---like what else would anyone want?) music, and is horrified to encounter the cold, brutal note posted there, informing her and all of the other unsuspecting users of the court-ordered shutdown.

2. In a panic, and feeling slightly dazed from this shocking blow, she quickly brings up Google and begins furiously typing search terms, looking for an alternative download source. However, her somewhat limited grasp of the English language causes her to enter a combination of words that, instead of bringing up alternative P2P networks, brings up a list of recording studios, with Big Blue Meenie being near the top of the list for some reason.

3. Still encumbered by her only passable English, she misinterprets said recording studios as being organizations which produce "recordings" (i.e. mp3's) intended for posting and distribution online. She concludes, since free mp3's are basically the norm these days (and why the hell shouldn't they be?) that BBM studios, in addition to producing mp3's, must have them posted for the taking on some part of their website.

4. However, she is frustrated because she cannot locate the specific part of the BBM website where the long list of available free mp3's resides so, feeling mounting annoyance, she resolves to dig out her cell phone (which already has a well rounded library of "complimentary" music loaded onto it, no doubt) and call the number listed on the website in order to ask for help.

5. Cut to the scene where Slipperman puts the phone to his ear and the bizarre and historic conversation plays itself out...

The limewire verdict is pretty new.
But where did you get "middle eastern"

I'm sorry, Dave, but can you actually miss the whole point more?

We have a whole bunch of kids not only NOT used to bying music thinking stealing (ie downloading) is a free SERVICE But also thinking that they are actually supporting artist by doing so. Popular media might even say that this is something the artist would want them to do.
Following that trail of thought the phonecall to slippy isn't that far fetched.

Poor English isn't a problem and living in the middle east has nought to do with it.
I would say the biggest group to turn is teens in well fared countries with lacking moral grounds ie the states and France, and because here in Sweden we've got our shit together.

Dave Perry

What do you mean miss the point?

I was only trying to explain why a professional recording studio would be misinterpreted by someone as a substitute for Limewire, which she did confirm over the phone was the kind of thing she wanted.

I would say the biggest problem from downloads lies a bit closer to home than middle east. Ofcourse my last paragraph is meant to be read with the tongue firmly placed in cheek.

I'd like to add to the 'We are so fucked"-ness by telling you all this:

I was on the bus the other day, on my way home, and I hear this girl singing. She's a little girl, couldn't be older than 5, I'd guess about 3 or 4 years old. Turns out she was of Asian nationality also.

Now. This may sound innocent enough, but when I realized what she was actually singing was quite disturbing. It was a Lady Gaga song. Again, pretty innocent, and I can't even remember the song now, but the odd part was when she finished singing her little passage, she would end it with "I'm so delicious". I believe this a line from another pop song that she mixed up with aforementioned Lady Gaga song.

There's is nothing more disturbing and just plain disgusting than hearing a 4 year old Asian girl singing a Lady Gaga song then telling an entire bus full of people she tastes good.

It was like some crude form of torture where you would be strapped in a chair and forced to listen/watch gruesome images/sounds. I was almost gagging.

The worst part?

The mother didn't do a thing to stop her singing. :headpalm: She sung this probably a good six times, she only stopped because they arrived at their spot. I mean, I wouldn't ever repress a child's artistic voice, but there is a line to be drawn by what influences the younger, innocent generation.

There is a line

I was just talking about a language barrier, not impugning the Middle East in any way. I think you skimmed over some key elements in my post, or Slipperman's, or both.

Most probbably, my appolegies.

I am probably a bit too sensitive about the racism thing, were having a bad political year over here.

When I read thick accent I thought rural Carolina or something.
I thought Alleah was a pretty common name in some parts of the American population.

For A lot of kids this download thing is the norm now, and for some young up comming artists is so confused that they've stated to their fans that it is ok.
So ofcourse phoning a studio for some of their recordings is fine. Following that trail of thought.
Heck there's even a party having a seat in the EU parliament saying it is ok to steal music. This whole thing has gotten so skewed in at the grassroots that it's unbelivable.

I am sorry for any offence taken by my missing that Alleah was probably from west Asia/middle east.

Dave Perry

Slipperman's a bright guy. He can probably tell a Middle Eastern accent. :)

I think the point was that she was confused about certain things and a language barrier could well have contributed to that, regardless of what part of the world she was originally from.

Not to derail the thread or anything, but I wouldn't say that artists who decide to give away their music are necessarily "confused", whether up-and-coming or Trent Reznor (he's stated live that his fans should "steal and steal and steal some more and give it all to your friends").

Just sayin'.

I would say artists "giving" away their music and saying that their fans should take anyone elses as well is a bit confused.

As a producer of musical goods a main stream of revenue is sales of sayd goods, giving it away or letting it be stolen is not a good buisiness idea.

Trent has earned enough off the old system not to care anymore.
I see he is making film music now...

In slippys case it's maybe some sort of flatery that his shop makes such high quality mp3s that people contact him directly...

Of course not.

The confused bit is when the artist or label is not given a choice.

yup, giving away CD:s or mp3:s gratis for promotion purposes is a common thing.

Giving away without any alternate stream of revenue or getting anything back from it confuses, if nobody else, me. ;)

Whoops.

I'm definitely not claiming to be an expert at accents BUT I DO live in a pretty ethnically diverse area, so I hear quite of bit of a whole lotta different type of folks trying their hand at the English language day in and day out.

I woulda guessed Lebanese specifically if I had to.

No matter.

I certainly didn't have a problem with her having an accent... I just had a bit of a problem UNDERSTANDING what she was SAYING both in terms of CONTENT and PRESENTATION.

It's like trying to tell an OCD person a funny story.

"So, a Yemenite and a Hungarian walk into a bar....."

"Hold it, hold it. a YEMENITE walks into a bar? It is unlikely that a Yemenite, who is most likely a Moslem, would walk into a place which sells alcoholic beverages....."

"...He might be there for a soda. So anyways, a Yemenite and a Hungarian walk into a bar. The Hungarian walks up to the barkeep and orders a Gin and Tonic....."

"A HUNGARIAN orders a Gin and Tonic? Wouldn't he be more likely to order a glass of Unicum or Palinka?"

"THIS Hungarian studied in London for four years. Now, are you gonna let me finish the god damn story or not?!"
