I would love to encourage those of you with a lot of experience passing sessions between multiple DAW platforms to share your experiences:

Problems that you've had with it.

Solutions you've come up with to overcome them.

If you haven't found a solution yet, please post the problem + possibly others have found work arounds.

I'm on the Recording Academy Producers + Engineers Wing DAW Guidelines Committee (holy crap... what a long name!), and your input hear will help us in making + finding solutions for the exchanging of sessions between various platforms.

Thanks!!

See the original PT Guidelines here (http://womb.mixerman.net/showthread.php?t=760).

Okay, I'll go first.

If you are attempting to import a session data from Sonar into older versions of Pro Tools (pre-V7) using OMF export/import, you need to check out the file name lengths in Sonar Project's Audio Folder first.

Sonar has a tendency to use as much information in its name about the attachments the wav file may have as possible when creating it, so it usually exceeds pre-V7 Pro Tools' 32-character-in-file-names limit, so OMF files with such content are rejected by PT.

I think that 32-character limit was lifted from V7 onwards, but still you should check it first.

If DP would implement Bwav I would never have an issue. That and it seems that Digi is hellbent on cutting all linkages that have previously worked with DP.

ditto

bwav would be a convenient format to work with. right now i jump around between a few (aiff, wav, sdII, etc.)

So, what's the work around with DP for session x-fer w/ other platforms.

i've never done a project in DP that i knew was going to another platform, but i can tell you that it has OMF support, so that's pretty much the answer. that or just moving audio files only into the other program, which is easy enough and a given for any movement from one program to another. only OMF actually moves a proper session, though.

Well, that's a good point...

Is there a need to transfer session assets from 1 platform to another? Do any of you do this? From any DAW to any other DAW?

Cuz if there really wasn't so much of a need then that would also influence the guidelines.

Thanks again every1 for your input.
