Just wanted to pop up a song my brother and I are working on for our band. He did the recording I am working on the mix. I’m new to this so anything will help. There are no vocals yet, and if you need any gear specs let me know. Just trying to find out where it stands. Thanks T

I dig the guitar sound, it works well with the kick trigger.

Bass seems kind of invisible, I get the feeling he's there at time, but I can't really spot him.

The mix seems tighter and brighter the first half, the guitar sounds are different, darker the last half. maybe the keys are clouding it.

You've done a good job of taming the cymbals, I could go for more toms.

It's really a pretty kick ass mix.

thanks archtop, I hope im headed on the right path. The bass keeps conflicting with the kick, im trying to get the low oomph outta it but it keeps mudding things up with the bass. I tried a couple of different Eq setting and can’t quite get it right. Any tips? The guitar does change in the ending section, it’s more of a JCM instead of his Mesa, just blending them different cause of the big keys. Toms are buried they sound pretty awful, playing and recorded wise. I haven’t figured out what im gonna do with them.
thanks for the reply,
T

dood I wouldn't go for the low ooomph on the bass
I'de go for bump on the cardboard boxy 300hz -700hz or somewhere in there
so it can be heard, or maybe a mid spike, steeper, and higher.(1-2khz ish)

Is the snare drum triggered too? Some of the hits in the 2:00-2:20 section are a bit off. Like the hit on the 2 beat is supposed to be on the "one-ee-and-a" but it's a little late, so it's not really on the "a" or the 2.

I really like the epic sounding keys at the end. They contrast well with the alternating sus chord/chugging guitar riff.

maybe high-pass it around 70 and add some distortion, too.

Thanks all, I will be trying the Eq ideas soon.

Is this because of ripping all the mids out of the kick, and giving each there own sonic space?

They are off from his playing, he played to a click and it messed with him pretty bad. I tried to move them in time and it sounded even worse. It does have a sample reinforcing it but it is mixed lower than the actual snare. We will be working on the vocals this week so hopefully I can get a finished mix up for critique soon. Thanks again for all the input!

Can't judge a mix without a vocal because it's not a mix.

Take out two kik drums for every three.

Thanks,

Mixerman

Sorry about the lack of vocals in the previous version, I have to transfer files with my brother via snail-mail and just put things together as I get them. I made some changes to the bass so hopefully it pokes out a bit more. The verb is not my favorite but I ran out of CPU and had to use a more efficient one. I'm noticing some flabby sounds in the low mids that really mud things up but cant place were their coming from, any advise? Again any input will help
thanks T.

Just bumping this in hopes for a critique. We are assuming that
the comment "Take out two kik drums for every three." relates to the drummer and his inconsistencies in playing the parts.
