I haven't tried it yet, but I am thinking on a bottle soon. Is the absinthe available today in select regions/stores, the real deal? Is the trippy-buzz from absinthe all folklore or partially true?

The only "absinthe" you can get in around here is Doubs (http://www.doubsabsinthe.com/site.htm) and it's not the real deal.

I suspect it's just an aniseed liqueur of some sort with a supposed infusion of 12 mountain herbs.

In regards to the original absinthe being trippy, it was supposedly to be taken as a large shot, mixed with a lump of sugar sort of "flambéd" with laudanum which is an opium derivative. You would basically drop a few drops of the laudanum with a dropper into a block of sugar, and light it. After a short while you would let it drop into the absinthe, consuming it once you had stirred it all together. Also, drinking it continuously on it's own on a long term basis departed an illness called "absinthism" which caused hallucinations because of the psycho-active thujone, which it contained in high amounts.

Not that I have or ever would partake. :weedstore:

Cheers :)

Should one be surprised that a big shot of 70% spirit makes one a bit trippy?
As far as thujone action, who knows – every herb-flavored drink causes different sort of drunkenness.

If you use the attack setting of your compressor really carefully, the thing you are up to might work. Not sure about the pre or post eq assumption there.

I always thought, possibly wrong, that wormwood was the active ingredient in the og absinth.

I haven't tried it yet...

Absynth (http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/absynth-5/?page=1105) is great, with all the trippy stuff.

But careful!! If you overdose it music starts to sound like THIS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eohNOArI1Qs) and you start posting superfluous forum posts.

Skip all the flames and such - mix 4/5 ICE cold water into 1/5 green fairy juice and enjoy.... to absynth it must have wormwood, anise, and fennel.... tasty and refreshing too!:weedstore:

Here's a recipe Aardvark, Otek, Malice and myself tried a few years ago :

- start the evening with a couple vodka-martinis and a few Blue Chimays.
- then indulge in the best Lebanese food you can get your hands on, and wash that down with a few bottles of Clos de Cana
- as the evening progresses, try a Duvel, followed by a shot of Absinthe, followed by a Duvel, etc...
- finish the night around 6AM with Stolly and Grand Marnier.

Score :
- Otek : took the morning off (probably something in the lebanese food), but got back in the game at around 1PM.
- Malice : made it home and drove the kids to school at 7AM
- Goes211 : went straight to the shop and mixed a (thankfully) rather quiet documentary about trees. Head was pounding until 4PM, and I'm sure it was the Absinthe.
- Aardvark : slept a couple of hours and then went for his daily marathon, as if nothing happened.

Those were the days.

One of the two times that I drank absinth (apparently this time it was the "real" absinth) I got a head-pounding hangover before I even went to bed. Granted, I did drink beers and whiskey and whatever too the same night (which I've learnt is a no-no for me. I gotta stick to one kind of alcohol and not mix shit) but ever since then, I've not had any desire to fuck with absinth anymore.

I've had it up here in Canada a few times. There are a couple different products ups here. Word on the street is that they are very tame compared to the original drink used in Europe in past centuries.

that said, the stuff packs a punch and I had a great time in both instances.

Mo Facta pretty much nailed it.

Hill's is a farce too.

Mary Mayan's is probably the most readily available in Europe (mainly Spain) and contains SOME of the original shizzle.

Right. From a highball glass. :headpalm:

Me, I was too busy trying to stay in Malice's couch. Kept sliding down on the floor like a blob of jelly.

This is da real shit:

Fun fact: Here, absinth has been illegal since 1910. It was re-legalized in 2005 :vuvu:

I spent my 26th birthday drinking arrack on the lovely beach of Kovalam just outside Tiruvallanandrapuram (Trivandrum). And of all places on earth I happened to run into old friends from Eksjö. The world's too small... :headpalm:

I need a shot of it then. That song brings back some really good memories going nightclubbing with my sweetheart at the time.
