Hi there people ,

My name is Boosh ,35 y.o. Producer/Singer/Musician/AudioPhile/Engineer/Mixer etc etc,.. I do it all.

My forum home is Craig Anderton's Sound Studio and Stage on Harmony Central but I decided to hop over and check this place out.

After watching the Vid I borrowed from a friend I got curious...
I'm not using Pro-Tools,.. Instead I use Nuendo.

I'm a follower of Bruce Swedien who helps me a lt and answers all questions I have,...But when I asked him about stereo buss compression he had to swallow and hold his Breath ;-) So don't tell Bruce I'm here 'cause he'll kick my butt.

Nuh,... he knows I'm curious and want to know everything about the bizz so I guess he won't mind...

I'm based 20kms from Amsterdam Centre(Netherlands) and will be peeking around and maybe asking loads of questions.

If you guys have questions for me,...Fire!

Hope it's usual for people to introduce themselves like this,..I thought it helps to break the ice and get to know eachother,..

Boosh

Do not be afraid of buss compression...join the dark side!

Hi Boosh...glad to see you over here! I mostly just lurk these board and gather info....

Fire away with any question you got...so many good guys and gals here to help...

(I mostly just lurk and try to take everything in =) )

See... I made the step but I cary a crucifix at all times man!!

First thing to do is read everything in all the threads here before I start bugging people with stupid questions like I do at our other place.

How come babelfish allways sounds like Gollem talking?

I know what you meant but it looks like Dutch from the Dark Ages,.....

Who knew?

Perhaps if you asked him in a different way... :D

Welcome.

No sir!...

I've been on this board daily for awhile and it seems any questions I've had have been answered already, so I took the opportunity to write in this thread.

So what is Mr. Swediens opinion on buss compression exactly? Does he consider it mastering?

I also was told 'not to' mix with a compressor on the buss when I started out,...and found that by the time a mix was close to done,..most of the trax had compression on them anyways.
I tried putting a compressor on the mixbuss and sounds immediately started 'punching' as I expected them to right away...but as I continued to mix, I started noticing that I was using some 'extreme EQ' and automation, and although it sounded fine to my ears,...the instruction I received in the 'not to' department was at the back of my mind telling me that this can't be the 'right way' to do this.

It wasn't until I saw MiLAR for the first time, and not only was Charles mixing through a compressor,..but the whole 'analog saturation' element (McDSP AC1) was exactly what my ears 'expected' to hear when running a signal through my DAW, and he was mixing through them both.
As soon as I tried it...I loved it. And as soon as I started to go after the sound I wanted to hear out of my monitors, the more I realized I was using less individual track compression, and things were comming together much faster.

My 2 cents.

I'll never understand why anyone would recommend NOT using 2-bus compression on anything other than Classical records and perhaps some straight ahead jazz.

If a mixer delivers a mix that is in need of compression AFTER it's completed, then what has he delivered? An approximation of what the mix will end up like after mastering. I make this statement based on the following fact: 2-BUS COMPRESSION CHANGES INTERNAL BALANCES IN YOUR MIX.

So, if this mixer spent any time at all on his incomplete and uncompressed mix, he's basically wasted everyone's time because compression after-the-fact is going to change your balances. Which begs the obvious question. What did he do? He certainly didn't MIX it.

Use 2-bus compression. It's a rule. And if you aren't happy with your 2-bus compressor, nut up and buy one that does the job properly.

Enjoy,

Mixerman

There are mixers I know who DON'T use compression on ANYTHING. Not the mix buss, not on individual trax.

They prefer to automate all dynamic changes, instead of using a compressor to control them. This sounds like an amazing amount of work, but these guys prefer it 4 some reason. I will assume it sounds better to them.

But this approach is not 4 me.

I prefer the sound of compression.

Mixerman,

I guess It's not Bruce's ignorance but the way he works and has worked for over 50 years. He must be something okay because he is considered by me and a whole lot of other people as one of the best sound engineers of this earth. I've heard work done by him 30 years ago which sounds so awesome! I whish I could reach that level someday.

Charles,

True,..there's a lot of people that don't use any compression at all including me. But I'm young and not afraid to experiment and when someone at HC told me you were here I had to check out what the fuzz is all about.

I'll check out your techniques for sure because I allways want to get new sounds and styles and want to learn everything,...mxing clean and mixing the way you do...

I'll be here checking out things and reading and asking dumb questions,... but not for now,..

Yesterday a 12ft ladder fell over and hit me on the head,..I have a concussion and have to take it easy a few days.
