We have a pair of those Altec Model 4 Mantarays lying about and I wanted to hook them up to a tube receiver for vinyl.

The surrounds on the tens are toast and I was looking for replacement drivers but can't find any info.

Anybody know what they used and if I have to find them or can use a similar Thiel Small 10" and make them sound spec?

Heres a forum that you might try (http://www.audioheritage.org/vbulletin/). They cover Altecs as well.

Just have 'em reconed!

There are still lots of places that do that work, and its still cheaper than new drivers.

Right...

You never know what damage has been done to the coil if it's been played with a damaged surround. I do some reconing sometimes, and I've seen some coils where the coating has been worn off to the bare metal. This doesn't sound like a "blown" driver, but it does mess with the impedance of the coil. And this causes weird crossover mud, sensitivity differences, power handling issues...

Recoing is cheap, and totally worth it.
