A good friend of mine asked me if I could record her for a cd that will be distributed to her family for Christmas. Here is one of the selections.

Thank you for listening.

Hey Gene !
I like that I hear the room and the dynamics in the playing.
The piano is not too bright, it can be quite painful on solo piano stuff. Good job there.
On the tune itself...it's a bit too bland for me (please take this for what it is...MY personal taste)...bordering cocktail lounge now and then. But then I am known on this side of the pond for calling Pat Metheny 'elevator music' so I wouldn't worry too much
I don't know if the tune is an original or not, if it is...to me it's someone have a little struggle with the writing. Aspiring to write a tad above your chops can be risky business. I don't even know if that's what's happening here, I see it more as...running out of vocabulary now and then.
I hear a few notes which I feel are 'out' (at 0:08, 2:34) but maybe that's a writing choice and me fighting a certain dissonance.
Your recording of the performance however, sounds just fine to me.

Did you put some kinda stereo/modulation effect on it? Sounds like there's a slight touch of 80's in there for some reason. It might just be because the piano needs to be tuned, but if you did put an effect on it, I'd say remove it Wink

Hello,
Only processing that was done, was minimal noise reduction to help reduce the air conditioning. It was recorded in August during our 100 degree days. It was recorded in her church, and she did mention that she wished she could have had it tuned before recording, but she said that an old out of tune Steinway was better than anything she had at home :)

This is the style of solo piano I wish I could do better.
Nothing wrong with the recording at all. It's entirely appropriate for the chamber jazz feel you seem to be going for.
I'll agree with Goes about those "out" notes-- which sound to me more like scale choices, and I've certainly been known to make a few that were suspect-- but that's not your fault.

Blasphemy!

seeing how it's solo piano, I think you could get away with more low mids
