View Full Version : Sample conversion for more DSP / 88.2 - 44.1

I recorded a session (PT TDM - Live drums, guitars, lots of vocals and BGVs)) at 88.2 (just to see what I would hear!) thinking I was the cool guy on the block...

Then, when it came down to mixing, I was left with half the DSP power and very limited mixer routing capabilities...

Now, what I'm thinking of doing is re-creating that session at 44.1, and I am looking for the best way of doing it.

Do I consolidate each track and bounce to disk converting to 44.1? Then open a new session and import...

Or do I open a new session (at 44.1) and import and convert each track?

Or is there another way...?

If anyone has done this before, or knows the best way to get back my DSP, I would appreciate all manner of input.

Thanks everyone!

PS ...and YES! I did hear a difference (improvement) at 88.2.

if you have protools, perhaps consolodate all the tracks so you can line them up, select all the consolidated tracks, then from your region list, say "export regions", set them to 44.1/16bit export them all, export them with pow -r dithering ...then make a new session and start re-adding the plugins.

just an idea of what ive done before, if its really confusing ask me anything, if its really obvious sorry for troubling. and good luck

sample rates its like the xfiles of this board, maybe because everyone has allready come to there own conclutions, or just dont care, perhaps the folks with the best ideas seem to think "i dont want to open that can of worms again" i notice alot of educated people bow out of discussions, maybe there off mixing who knows, peace

Thanks Luke - I don't want to start a discussion either, nor get into a long thread on the ethics of conversion - Ohhh! That sounds religious!!

But I did not think of dithering?? I thought dithering was for bit depth - Ex.: from 24 bit to 16 bit??

I do have PT - TDM and all the files are 24 bit - AND I want to stay in 24 bit - SO, do I really have to re-dither while converting if I stay in 24 bit??

So, consolidate - then export RATHER than consolidate and bounce - or is that the same thing said differnetly?

Thanks!

You mentioned in the other thread that you have HD3.

Is that Accel?

The reason I ask this is that I only have HD 2 Accel and I almost never run out of DSP.

I usually use 44.1 but I recently was mixing a project that was 88.2 kHz and had over 90 tracks and I still had no problems.

What plugins are you running that is using so much DSP?

How many tracks?

Please elaborate because printing some FX might be the better way.

I actually tried converting using the new session import plan and I didn't like the conversion at all. The top end changed a lot.

I didn't try the other way but if possible, I would try and stay at 88.2.

Good luck.

In LE, I use the "Save Session Copy In" command which allows you to save the session with a different sample rate, among other things. TDM must surely have this command also.

Just give the session a new name with , as an example, 44 at the end. And save your current session with 88 at the end to denote the sample rates used.

Hope this helps!

Hey!

Thanks Kenny... and luke_m (and you just keep on mixing Pimp-X!)

HD 3 Accel - Plugs were 'narrowed' down to mainly Sony Oxford (because they seem to be real easy on DSP/plug-in sharing) some McDSP Channel G + (1) Chrome Tone - // Waves LMB (2)

3 Sony reverbs - 1 Digi long delay

I RTASed plugs until my CPU usage got up to 55%!

I had no room to add some DUY Analog bundle which I recently bought - and mixer routing was down to 'no more DSP for 1 more Stereo AUX input' !!!!

Last I checked - I'm close to 90 voices (tracks) with all the BGVs -

All virtual amps have been printed or RTASed...

Next step is to print FX tracks if I stay in 88.2 which no doubt sounds better than 44.1 but has made mixing a real patience tester and a brain teaser - trying to out smart the system usage meter!

I thought life would be easier to 'downsize' to 44.1 where I have been working for the past 18 months and simply start the mix over with more DSP options available to mix with!!

Thanks for all the input!

…and if there is a better way...
