Tick based or Sample Based

Although I've read the manual sections on Tick-Based Timing and Ticks vs Samples, I'm still not totally clear on this concept. I usually leave the default settings when creating a session & tracks, because I'm not sure what's happening when I change a track or the session to sample-based or tick-based.

When writing, I use both MIDI & audio tracks, and then record all the MIDI as audio prior to mixing. Timebase ruler is set to Bars|Beats.

If someone could explain this, I would appreciate it.

I also just watched Kenny's "Creating a Click Track" video, which shows exactly what the article stated.
