Do you take the time to talk to interested local crew members who are maybe up and coming or do you just dismiss them as young minions who should be making tea ??
Just curious as the sound guys on this lemar tour seem very snobby where as the lighting guys seem very cool.

well, i like making conversation with folks. also, i don't believe in secrets or withholding information, so i'm happy to spread whatever information i have. some folks like chatting, some are just about business, and some have decided they know everything already. what can you do?
there are definately cool folks on each of the crews, and people with less pleasant personalities on all of the crews. i've been lucky in so much as the last few crews, sound and lights, have been totally cool. it's been a blast. some cranky older guys don't seem to want to share info with anyone under some misguided guise that it's job security for them. i think they are dinosaurs, and i the best folks i've worked with didn't withhold information.

95% of soundguys I know, whether young, middle-aged, or old LOVE to teach, and love to learn from others.
There's a time and place though. During soundcheck or the show is rarely one of these times. During load-in when you're under the gun is often not the time. After the show, when they want to just get out of there and get some sleep after a long day is usually not a good time.
Mutual downtime is a good time.
Of course, how often does that happen?
We do a lot of college gigs, and often our crew is composed of theatre or audio major type kids. I love explaining what I'm doing, what things are, why I'm doing things. But if I'm under the gun, and I've gotta jump on shit and get moving or there's a clusterfuck in the making, I'm gonna do it and not make pleasantries while I do so. While there's a lot of camaraderie involved, you've also gotta remember it's a JOB, and one the working staff is expected to do well, and on time.

ha, i talk to foks who dread college gigs simply because everyone is so anxious to talk, ask, and debate the reasons for doing things one way or another that it's hard to get anything done at all. that stuff is great in it's time and place, but some gigs don't have the relaxed time to just discuss things.
i do shows where there is a lull after soundcheck but before the show, for instance. or after load in but before the band is there to soundcheck. those times would normally work for me.

ohh hell yeah guys with you on the timing thing I never talk unless they have the wacky backy tin out and feet up , however tonight as we were stripping the array we were talking about its design and such but also getting the job done quickly and the sound guy who I thought didnt like me hanging about trying to help them came over and said if you ring person x at wigwam he might be able to give you some work and thanks a lot for your time. I always make an effort with every department though for instance on this shows in I was on lighting and it was good to learn the other side of things as well so I can be more useful in a heated situation.
Do you find a difference between british and american crew's etc or other countries in their manners and such like ? I've noticed that the more cultured and toured the guys are the nicer they seem to be as they have once been there. However the types for instance our chief lx whos only ever been in one theatre all his career doesnt like me showing interest or making progress seem to always be of the reluctant arrogant sods ?
