Since NS10s are not self-powered speakers, I'd like to know what kind of amp you guys use with them... thanks.

If you insist on putting your ears thru the unnecessary pain of those hideous things, then at least power them with a high-quality amp - Bryston, Hafler, Crown, etc...

This is probably going to be supremely unhelpful but a friend at whose studio I do a fair amount of work uses a Carver 1U rack mount jobby to power his. Don't know the model number.

I'm using the Bryston 4B.

You can get them pretty cheap on ebay.

i'm using a hafler. (but i'd be happy on a bryston as well)

mines the p3000, so there is a solid 150 watts a side for the speakers. that means there is plenty of headroom and everything is happy.

i have a switcher so i go between the ns10's, some dynaudio acoustics, and the aurotones. works great.

Love the old Crown Amps on those. The Bryston's are good. Sorry, but I really don't know the model numbers. But my favorite of all the McIntosh 275, tube amplifiers.

Makes the NS10s sound like God.

Okay, well not really. But they are remarkable amps. Unfortunately, they are way too impractical (and probably expensive), and a bit of a waste to use on your NS10s.

Whatever you do, DO NOT USE A YAMAHA AMPLIFIER WITH NS10s!!!!!! You will rue the day.

I don't have NS10's

but replacing the yamaha amp with a crown (dc300a)

sounded not only way better, but the bottom was way bigger.

Are you sure that wasn't just more tautology?

Yeah...

You're probably correct.

Big old Crown amp here. I've never really paid much attention to getting something different for the NS10's fwiw. I'm not a huge fan of them and have done years without. About 2 or 3 years ago we got some for really cheap in a package deal and have kept them since. The crown was the only amp we had laying around back then and it's been on there since. It used to power an old passive pair of ATC's.

I do switch to the NS10's for listening but don't really 'work' on them to be honest. Well ... hardly ever.

I got a Quad something o something.
Apparently it is the typical British setup.

As usual, thank you all. Around here I'm hearing favorable opinions about the Samson Servo series amps (260 or 170), which are supposed to be quite flat & neutral, which is what I'm going after for the ns10s. Any comments on that?

Don't really know about the samson amps, but I don't even take a leak in the direction of anything that says Samson on it...

And what comes to NS10 as speakers I love to check my mixes through them but prefer something else to do the actual work. Good speakers to check lower mids imho.

Dude, how do you know what we have? Have you been casing the joint? Are you the guy who lives in the attic? Man, that's just creepy... And quit leaving jars of pee around.

But yeah, the carver sounds great, it's 150w per channel, more than ample power to cram the dagger further into your ear for maximum pleasure... Hell, I like the speaker, makes you work really hard for a mix, and once you've got it, you got it good... The jbl's make everything sound too slick, too hard to get the midrange happening...

Fulcrum, if anything goes missing, those scary looking fuckers at your door calling you "boy" are called "Williamson County Sheriffs", they're mean, they like to beat their convicts before they're convicted of anything and trying to talk sense to them is like trying to talk sense to a brick wall, with very similar results. Good luck with that, and welcome to Texas!

Wow, Carver manufactured more than one amplifier? Shh.

That's not urine. Well, not human urine.

I have been using a Yamaha P2100 with my NS10s and one side has started to get quieter. I was thinking of having it repaired, but after reading your post, you have me re-thinking that. Since the NS10s are a secondary reference for me. I am wondering if going with one of the higher wattage power amps (200-250) is needed when I listen very quietly? Also, does it need to be the quality of Bryston, Crown, etc.. if I am listening at low volumes? I want them to sound as good as possible, but I don't want to over-spend if it won't make a difference at the lower volume. Thanks, any input from anyone is appreciated.

I'm using a shitty Alesis amp with the White Coned Cunts.

They sorta deserve each other.

In all seriousness, the amp I use does the job of amplifying the audio signal without excess distortion. Of course there are much better amps than the crappy one I'm using, but then again, they are NS-10s...

I'm getting a nice little Crown amp at some point later. But that's later.

I called a friend today and he happened to be selling his Hafler P3000. So I bought it and just hooked it up to my NS10s. Wow, what a difference. The Hafler really opened up the audio spectrum on the NS10s. Mixerman, I am so glad I read your post. I did not realize how badly the Yamaha amp was affecting the sound. Thanks.

I have been biamping mine with 2 of these per side:

It really brings out that low-end authority so sorely missed with these monitors.

Wait until you see the power supply for my NibNob.

I don't just show that to anybody, you know.

Buy a Bryston 4B.

3B would also do (in fact it sounded better than 4B to my ears in all the occasions I've heard them both for some reason but its wattage is lower than 4B so if you audition very loud then get 4B. Otherwise go for 3B.)
