I see that Aardvark has learned to not say this year after he says "Habs win the cup."
Indeed, he could simply be quoting something that happened 24 times in the rapidly dwindling past.
Note that he never says they will win the cup. Just that they do, or have.
That I'm a fan of a team that has yet to touch the prize is of no significance, of course.

All hail the Habs!! Except for when they play the Sharks.
Actually, the Canadiens were my first hockey team. I adopted them when I spent a couple years in Quebec many moons ago. Since then, my native Bay Area got their own team, so I went with them. Does that make me a traitor? I guess it might. :Uh oh:

Notice that it took Aardvark a little time to post this thread?
Its because he had to seek professional help after the Maple Leafs trounced his beloved team.
Badly.
Again.
Rinse and repeat.
The only cups the Habs will be holding this year is the one that resides for protection purposes between their collective legs.
And I notice the crickets are chiping in "Sens Nation"...the ones who don't even earn the right to speak until their "superstar team" makes it beyond .500
Yep...thems be mightly loud crickets...

Well I'm a Habs fan and have been for way too long, I saw the Rocket play. That said the Habs are winning squat until they get a defense man who can move the puck and unload the floating russians. Once Kovalev Samsonov Souray and Ninimaa are gone, and we can afford a Pronger Neidemeyer type, we will indeed contend. The Cube will help once he's back, because I think he has the ability to skate with the puck and layout some wicked hits. Also the team looks out of shape to me, too many lazy penalties, Carbo has keep them out of the bars a little more. Take care Logan

Hey, Aardy, your wait is over. You won't have to preoccupy yourself with hockey anymore - NASCAR is coming to Canada (well, actually, Quebec - not sure how you all are getting along these days).
When the time gets closer, I'll give you a tutorial on how to act. Until then, you can practice:

well Cube (Francis Boullion)is a defense man and it's becoming a rare thing in the "new NHL" for a defenseman to lug the puck out of his own zone. The current Habs have a fuck of a time clearing their own end, but back in our hey day the key to our success was Dmen who could carry the puck. This frees up the forward line to break for a pass and forces the other team to be leary on their forecheck.
If you dump the puck in, which is pretty much all that everyone does these days, and the defense can grab the puck and start a rush, your forwards have to back up quicky or be caught in an odd man rush. The Hurricians won the cup last year thanks to a hot goalie and an audacious fore check. take care Logan

As I posted above, I spent some time in Quebec some 20 yrs ago, and Le Club de Hockey Canadien became my first hockey team. Once the Sharks started up in the Bay Area (my native stomping grounds), I started following them instead. But, now I'm thinking, why have only one team? I mean, the Canadiens and the Sharks hardly ever play each other (won't play at all this year 'till they each reach the finals :D ), so what could it hurt? Plus, I live a lot closer to Montréal these days than I do San Jose. I'm gonna have to see about getting up to Montréal this winter to catch a game.
I think it's time for me to get back in touch with my inner Hab.

Senap: Bummer. Last place - not good.
The Habs are currently occupying the 6th slot in the conference, but are only 2 points out of the 2nd spot, AND they have a couple games in hand against most the other teams. So, so far so good.
The Sharks are in the 4th spot, and only 3 points out of the top spot in the West. Damned Ducks are playing out of their minds so far this season. I fully expect the Ducks (what kinda name is that?) to come back to earth at some point.

Bummer indeed. The head coach just got kicked out and we got a new canadian (I think) guy called Dave King. I think that he coached some NHL team before as well as the Canadian national team. I hope he turns it around or we're down to the second best series next year....

There seems to be an Eastern Conference bias here. While teams like the New York Rangers can play "road games" in NYC, New Jersey and Boston, strong teams -- like the Detroit Red Wings -- are forced to travel across both countries and assert their dominance on teams from all points of the compass in all time zones.
And this is why such weak sisters like the Lightning and the Hurricanes are able to eek out a Cup; the West is exhausted but even then they make a series out of it.

....only a Habs fan could come up with this. I think it's probably some sort of free-association-stream-of-consciousness thing brought on by watching too many Habs games, but I'm not a shrink, so I can't say for sure.
I also find it fascinating that Habs fans tend to show their love for their team not through praise of their own team, but by insulting others. Sure, not as bad as Senators fans (who are actually just united Leafs haters, not really Sens fans at all), but the method is there all the same.
Sure, it's been 39 years since the Leafs won the Stanley Cup. That's a simple fact. But, lest you forget, it's been 13 years for the Habs, too.
It's alright, though, Aardie. No matter how vulgar you get, no matter how blind your love for the Habs makes you, it's all okay in the end. You know why? Because it's a sport. A great sport, to be sure, but still a sport at the end of the day.
And you're entitled to your opinion.

Funny you mention reading GH, an amazing thought just occurred to me.
I am almost smack dab in the middle of the first novel, or novels, I have read for pleasure since the most recent Harry Potter came out. Robertson Davies' Deptford trilogy has proven a worthwhile read (I'm currently in the middle of the second book, The Manticore) and an interesting insight into Ontario life in the early part of the last century.
And yet, three hundred plus pages in, I just now realized that I have yet to encounter one single reference to hockey.
Cognitive dissonance?

What is going on? Les Boys are in the crapper OK I admit it, there's a problem in Hab land, the team has no heart and can't score.
Actually I blame Aardvark in a symbolic way. There he is golfing in some southern clime along with about 90% of the population of Quebec. We just lost to Florida who beats us regularly why? It's all that quebecoise energy at their games. Instead of donning their touques, gragging their sticks and celebrating the glories of winter with endless rounds of shinny, the citizens of quebec are deserting the snow and ice for the things and speedos of southern beachs. Therefore the skill set is down and the emergence of a true quebecoise star to lead the Habs back to there former glory is put on hold for yet another decade.
So come on southernclimevark get your ass backup here to the freezing cold, grab your stick and lead by example the future of the team depends on you. take care Logan

Your honour, this official record displays, with no prejudice, how far a specific hockey team has fallen.
Now, your honour, if you reference earlier records pertaining to this case, you will see that certain individuals mentioned, in no uncertain terms, that this team in particular would take the cup.
Judge, it is clear that said team from Centre Hice, is in no immediate position to secure a berth anywhere near the stanley cup.
In fact, with little more prompting, I can forsee said team will suffer a fall so great that it will rival only that one other figure of religious allegory...that of a certain cherubim. You can guess to whom I refer to.
Yes, your honour, that was speculative. I withdraw my conjecture.

Tough break for the Leafs last night. I gotta admit, Montreal played fairly well, particularly in the high-stick-Sundin-with-1:31-left-and-don't-get-called-for-it department.
I also feel compelled to add that, despite scoring a goal last night, McCabe needs to be benched for the rest of his contract. I've never played competitive ice hockey, and I could have made it past him. He's a waste of a jersey at this point.
Still, we're not dead yet. The next few games for both Toronto and Montreal should be interesting, to say the least.

I dunno about Click, but I'm not claiming that the refs had it in for the Leafs. In fact, if you read my post again, you'll see that I'm giving credit to the Habs for that one. Sure, it sucks for the team worth cheering for (The Leafs, for those of you without a program), but not getting caught is part of the game, after all.
And seriously, Aardie... are you trying to tell me that wasn't a high stick? Seems pretty damn clear on all the replays to me. Sure, the ref and linesmen didn't see it, so there was no call... but it was definitely high sticking.
But, it wasn't called, and the Leafs lost the game. C'est la vie, as you would say.

Lol...
No, I don't think the officiating was "siding" with the Habs per se, and yes, they played a good game...
But a high-sticking penalty at that point in the game could have CERTAINLY made it interesting, n'est pas?
And yes, Limit...the consistancy has gone out of the window...kind of like the "defined strike zone" in baseball gets wider and more lenient as the season goes on...

Just want to add that, in addition to the 8-5 loss the Habs suffered to Buffalo, the belowved Maple Leafs won against New Jersey, 4-3.
1 point is all that separates the Leafs and the Habs now. And, as it stands today, the Habs are one point out of the playoffs.
The race is definitely on.

Yeah, that hurt.
But, to be fair, the Habs lost to Boston 3-1 as well.
With the scrap for 8th going on between Montreal and the Leafs, a loss is a tiny bit easier to swallow when that particular misery is shared by Montreal as well.
Also, I'd like to take a moment to point out that while the beloved Leafs were beaten by the first place team in the conference, the Habs just lost to team #12.

He isn't silent, he lurks under the desk and put down people's
reputation (not yours of course because he know what that'd
mean to his virginity).
He gives me negative rep:
whenever I post something bad about the hABS
whenever I post something good about the Habs
whenever I don't agree with him
whenever I DO agree with him
whenever I post something at all or he stumbles over some
old posting of mine
whenever he feels like that
mostly on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays
whenever 1-7 don't apply
So after careful weighting up the pros and cons and a closer
look at that red bar of dots that decorates each of my postings
since today I've come to the conclusion that Clicktrack was
somehow right all the time.
Or Aardy was wrong. Whatever gives more reps.

Ah Varkster we're suffering the slings and arrows of the great unwashed, the pretenders to glory, and the out an out simple minded fuckwads stupid enough to cheer for the The Toronto Make Beleafs, the mighty laffs who have no won since confederation X100.
The minor chirping from ranger fans can of course be laughed off for what it is, the whinning of novice cockswallors who actually believe that Mr "I forget to set my alarm for the playoffs" Jagr is going do more than fold like a cheap tent as is his usual want when the post starts.
As magnanmous and gracious students of the game we do give some credit to the Sabres for playing a disciplined hardworking game, but will they win? Their rink is full of Toronto fans who can't afford to go to the ACC, so their obviously fucked to start with. When they have won even a cup, let alone 24, we can begin to acknowledge their presence, until then they are merely whinning fuckin wannabes living in a butt ugly city.
Its tuff to be a Habs fan it's tuff to be the Habs, the franchise everyone wants to play and wants to beat, why is that? Because they are in a class by themselves, the gold standard. They have a glorious past, they always compete, they always finish high enough to get squat for draft picks, unlike most of the aforementioned chaff. The players play in a fish bowl watched by fans who understand the beauty of the game and who are not content with second rate effort and when they see it they don't like it. Its hard times in Montreal ATM but remember the cream always rises to the top. 24 and counting.
Now vark how are you doing on that panther member? If you have a neighbour, some little old lady with a black cat, I suppose any black cat bone would do, but really we need some powerful medicine, there are obviously powerful dark forces at work. There's a pretty big Haitian community there, you could make some enquiries. There are alternatives but they involve great quanities of single malt and playing chicken on subway tracks, I'm getting kinda old for that not as quick as I used to be, I'd rather deal with the panther. Let me know, take care Logan

Stealing people's reputation builds up bad Karma which in turn
means less points for the mighty hABS.
You're on a good path building up that much negative Karma
that even the playoffs are in question.

Sens 5, Leafs 1. That's very sad.

And the Rangers are joining the fight for playoff position in earnest with their victory over the Islanders.
3 way points tie for 8th position now. It's making for exciting hockey, I have to admit... even if the Leafs aren't winning as much as I'd like them to.

Top 10 Reasons Why You Don't Want to Date a Habs Chick (especially if you're a Leafs fan)
#10, for Christmas, she got you a Habs tuque/hat, and then asks you to try it on
#9, she has a poster of Sheldon Souray in her bedroom, in a speedo.
#8, after Leafs-Habs games, she gets mad with you because the Leafs won, again.
#7, whenever you do something wrong, she calls you a Brisebois
#6, she deletes the CBC channel from the television subscription when she moves into your house
#5, in bed, she calls out "Huet!" during your moment of bliss
#4, she sticks a HONK IF YOU'RE A HABS FAN sticker on the bumper of your car, which you drive to work in, everyday, into downtown Toronto
#3, she wears Habs underwear lingerie and serves 'poutines' with every meal she cooks
#2, instead of counting sheep to help her fall asleep, she recites all the years that the Habs won the Stanley Cup, in order, and then kisses you goodnight.
AND THE #1 REASON NOT TO DATE A HABS GIRL (ESPECIALLY IF YOU'RE A LEAFS FAN!):...
The first night she dumps you, you'll wake up at 3 in mourning with chills, wearing a Habs Tuque, staring down Sheldon Souray's poster in your bedroom, dreaming of Habs lingerie, craving poutine, and remembering the time she yelled out: "HUET!"

Long ago in this thread I mentioned my Dad went to law school with Ken Dryden, and that I'd try to see if we could go see him. Unfortunately he's a busy man.

Ahhh... my team is making it interesting. Now only 4 points out, they control their destiny if they can beat the Flames in their next two meetings. The Flames have a VERY difficult schedule coming up too.
Peaking at this time of the year is crucial. Calgary is flaming-out now and the Av's are putting it all together now.
April 8th may be a VERY interesting day.

Hi Guys , I am a Canadian (although a leaf fan) just so yah know,
As far as I am concerend the teams that only really count in my book are the original 6 !
Toronto Maple Leafs
Montreal Canadians
NY Rangers
Boston Bruins
Detroit Red Wings
Chicago Blackhawks
My second opinion however jaded it might be is that ,beside the fact that the NHL needs a lot of teams, and teams from towns with money ,
I dont believe that you should be allowed a hockey team if A It doesnt snow in your town, B - You cant have natural ICE !
So that would pretty much rule out LA, Nashville, Anaheim , Florida ,etc .
my third opinion , which is against what I am saying, But they gotta BRING the JETS BACK ! Long Live the Winnipeg Jets, they'll kick everyones a$$
just a canadian point of view, lol

That would also rule out Vancouver. Come to think of it, the last few years I lived in Toronto it didn't get cold enough to get a good backyard rink either.:D

yeah youre right, what I meant was the "warm " states , I am not even totally sure if the ppl there even like hockey ? ????
Its a real piss off to us in the Peg, that we can't get a team (cuz we dont have enough moolah) now with the salary cap that might change it , but theres all theses teams down south, they got lots of ppl coming out I guess, but where do the poor kids go after they see the game in florida and want to go skating and play hockey with there buds .
Alteast in TO , and vancity , you can find snow , all you gotta do is drive a bit.
What Im saying is what if Pueto Vallarta (mexico) got a hockey team, how much more ridiculus can you get, Hawaii !????????
ITs either that or we get a canadian league and hog all of our players , MU HA HA HA HA !

Funny too!
But, even the Habs know - you can't keep Patrick Roy forever.
With they'd have kept that CSS (Can't Stop Shit) Theodore. Good for Abby though. Now his big freaking fan club can cross the pond and see him play for less hastle and less money.
Calgary's keeping it interesting. Sans the Oil (this year), the NW division is still the toughest in the game.

I was impressed with the intensity shown by the Leafs last night. The problem was that they couldn't maintain it for 60 mins. Miller stood on his head or the game would have been out of reach after 2 periods. Goaltending wins championships.

Oh my god the ranting of the also rans and lunatics is getting depressing.
There is only one real hockey team and even if it was deadlast in the standings it would still be number one in the minds and hearts of those who actually understand, appreciate and play the game. It's a matter of class, something those of you who would cheer the Trawna Make Beliefs are lacking to be sure, but the fact of the matter is Habs have it, the Laffs, Rags, Hurlers and those lil devils do not. end of story.
Rangers, cup? Christ Slip have you reverted to glue again. Remember last time when you ended up passed out with your nose firmly affixed to the console bar, come on man lay off that shit. the next time were gona use a propane torch to soften it first before we pull you off. Take care Logan

Actually...they were eliminated by Montreal's win last night combined with their own major chub-choking on a two goal lead last night. Cam Ward couldn't stop a sink with a cork...his horseshoe from last year is finally out of his ass.
Meanwhile...we need The Habs to smite the Rangers Thursday and for the Leafs to win against the Islanders....then Saturday night we want the Rangers to lose to Pittsburg and Toronto to beat Montreal in overtime.
Yes, that is what I said.
This will eliminate New York and Montreal will, by tie-breaker, get the seven seed and Toronto eight.
The Rangers appear to be ready to snarf back a fair bit of fuck-foam these days and head for the links.

Or maybe I'm just going nuts. Who knows?
Alas, the Leafs didn't make the playoffs this year. Very unfortunate.
However, i take some heart in the fact that, though the Leafs didn't do the job this year, at least they went down swinging, knocking out the Habs in the process. :)
Sucks that the Leafs playoff chances came down to a shootout between the Devils and Islanders, but that's the nature of the game, I guess. Better to be knocked out by the result of a game that you couldn't control, then to get knocked out by actively losing a game...
...you know, like what happened to the Habs.
