View Full Version : Azraphael's Slightly Irregular Lyric Challenge

Azraphael
March 30th, 2007, 07:16 PM
Greetings and hallucinations, folks.

I was chatting with the typical crew in the Wombchat the other day, and came up with this idea... so I figured rather than ask the powers the be, I'd just go ahead and start. :)

So, without further ado, I give you the beginning of Azraphael's Slightly Irregular Lyric Challenge!

"Great!" you say, "but what the fuck is that?" Well, I'll tell you.

I dig the triva that we have going right now, though I often don't know the answers. I also think that we don't cater to the singers amongst us enough around these parts (not that I'm a singer, but I still think they're kinda critical to the whole music industry... but don't tell them I said that). So, with those two small factors in mind, I came up with what, I hope, will be a fun way for us to waste some time around here.

So here's how it will work. I'll post an exerpt of lyrics, and the first person to post the correct song title and performer will win whatever rep point I have to offer.*

I will accept cover versions as well. Doesn't have to be the original artist. Also, I'm not looking for songwriters... just performers.... if they happen to be one and the same, great... if not, then give the performer's name.

The "slightly irregular" refers to two things: First off, I'm going to attempt to find lyrics that are kind of atypical, just cuz it's more fun. Secondly, I will be posting subsequent challenges as soon as a) someone has anwered the previous one correctly, and b) i ahve another one to add.

That could mean several times a day, or once every couple of days, depending on my schedule, level of creativity, and, of course, the level of general interest around here.

So, hopefully I'm not off my nut and this is something that we can all enjoy. Mods, if this is in the wrong spot, or if you want to sticky it and formalize it, it's cool with me. Just let me know what, if anything, you want to do and I'm sure we can sort it out.

So, here it is... first person with the right answer wins rep points!*

Lyric Challenge #1

Standing in the sun with a popsicle
Anything is possible

Dave

Congrats to MacGregor! The correct answer to Challenge 1 is Without A Trace by Soul Asylum.

Rep points have been awarded. JG, I can't give you rep yet because I gotta spread some around or something... but I'll catch it up with you for getting close, since the original instructions were kinda buried in my blather....

I'm going to try to keep these relatively easy until we really get going with this. So, expect more difficult ones later on. Anyway, moving right along....

Congrats! I did say I would accept covers, after all. :D

The correct answer is Common People by Pulp, later covered (amusingly badly) by William Shatner.

An no, jerry, definitely not trying to move in on your territory at all. In fact, the general music trivia is kinda what got me thinking about this in the first place, so consider it a tribute, since that's how it's meant!

Besides, I know next to nothing about most of the classic rock stuff you're talking about over there anyway. :)

So, without further ado:

Alright, then. Score one for the quizmaster, or something like that.

I'll consider you stumped by Lyric Challenge #18*. The correct answer, for those of you playing at home is the song Rise Up by The Nylons, or by Parachute Club.

Hereabouts, the Parachute Club version charted on pop radio and MuchMusic, and made a pretty sizable splash in the pop market. Oh well. One hit wonder 80s pop apparently isn't the forte for this crowd... which is probably for the best, in the grand sceme of things. :D

*Items noted in bold red text are draw attention to the fact that you were all stumped. The lot of ya. Stum Ped. So there, ha! Uhm... where was I?...

And who am I to argue with the kind of encouragement?

The correct answer for Lyric Challenge #20 is Long Day by Matchbox Twenty.

And, since at least 1 person is still reading, and in honour of the arrival of spring (and with it barbecue season*):

Lyric Challenge #21

US Prime, Grade A stamped, guaranteed
Grease it up and turn on the heat

*Please note, this is different than BBQ. In the US, it seems that BBQ is either a type of cuisine, or in Texas at least, a food group. In Canada, a barbecue is a cooking appliance. It always seemed odd to me that Americans have named a cuisine after an appliance... which reminds me, I'm hungry. I could really go for some oven right now...

It's your typical retarded Sammy Hagar lyric from Van Halen's first truly retarded album, i.e., their first without Diamond Dave. I think the title, ironic as it now seems, is Good Enough?

Azraphael
April 17th, 2007, 09:00 PM
Well done, Fulcrum!

Good Enough by Van Halen is the correct answer. It's actually the lead off track on 5150, their first album with Sammy Hagar. Greenies have been awarded.

And, while we're on the subject... for the record, I'm in the minority, I guess, but I think that Vah Halen's best overall songs came from the Hagar years. I don't think they had any albums during that time that were great, but if you take the best songs over that period and put them onto one album, you'd really have something. Too bad it wasn't consistent.

And, before this gets off on too much of a tangent, yes I do like the Diamond Dave stuff too... but that's always sounded more about Eddie's musical masturbation than actually crafting good overall songs, IMNTLBFHO.

Anyway, moving right along...

Well done, Spock! Greenies have been awarded.

Everything Zen by Bush is correct. I would have also accepted BushX from our Canadian contingent, of course, since the band was forced to change their name for releasing material in Canada due to name infringement.

Anyway, moving right along...

I am assuming to mean that you infer the second stanza of the second verse as oposed to the first verse, which reads

"I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular"

I was an eighties kid and The Smiths will forever kick ass, as well as The Smithereens.

Correct, unfcknblvbl!

I'm impressed by you giving the "full" name of the band, too... though (to my knowledge) they have never come out and said quantifiably that it stands for anything, this interpretation is the most common.

And as for the missing S, that was just a typo. Thanks for pointing it out for the people playing at home. :)

Good point... though, from what I understand, that's always been a joke. A common one, but a joke nonetheless. The version that unfcknblvbl provided is the most commonly accepted of the potentially "real" sources for the name KMFDM. I guess I shoulda clarified.

Though, Kill Mother Fucking Depeche Mode does have a nice ring to it.... :)

That prize is awarded to Guns N Roses, when they opened for The Cult in 1987 (while The Cult was touring for Electric).

Bloody awful doesn't begin to describe that nightmare 45 minute set that I had to sit through.
