View Full Version : Incidental speaker placement

This may be my stupid question for the weekend. However, I finally managed to wire in my computer speakers (a pair of Cambridge Soundworks, which I really like the sound of) to do the 'incidental mono' mixing technique practiced on MiLaR (I made use of my 24i/o and creatively patched it in alongside my main monitors and headphone amps -- saved myself from having to spend $400 on a Mackie Big Knob as CueMix handles the entire task rather nicely :) ).
Seeing as I also using these speakers for my laptop, I am wondering if when assume mix position at the board, should I move the computer speakers to "line them up" either on the near or far side of my computer? Or, is it okay to leave one near and the other far, and mix this way?
Any light shed on this is definitely appreciated.

Not quite sure I follow you. Can you explain a bit more?

Let's see if I can explain things a little better, now that I've had a little bit of r 'n' r...
I've managed to work my computer speakers into my studio setup and since I share them with my laptop, when I am not mixing, they would normally be position on either side of the laptop. However, when I am mixing, I would then face the speakers towards my left ear to listen in "mono" mode.
However, one of the speakers is further back than the other, as they are still on either side of the laptop (which you've hopefully guessed is on my left side). Will this make a difference when doing the "mono" thang and sort of taint the mix? IOW, when I position the speakers towards my left ear, should I line them up side by side so that the both speakers are the same distance from my left ear?
Hopefully, that was clearer...

It won't "taint" the mix but you might hear some delay-induced comb filtering...
On second thought, maybe it will taint your mix afterall. It just might.

I didn't think of the comb filtering aspect... that would probably be enough reason to just take the time to move the far computer speaker. Besides, it seems to get more usage hooked into my main studio setup these days than it does with my laptop.

Yep, the comb filtering iz well worth moving them.

I really like the word "taint".
Now I'm gonna be saying it all day!

I could say that you could write a song with it, but that's been done.

Not to be throwing your money around like its pocket litter, but why not just buy another set of PC speakers at a computer show or flea market for your laptop and move the Cambridge units you like over to the mix desk?
Even pretty darn good PC speakers go for next to nothing in the second hand market and they are pretty easy to find - so getting something plenty good enough for laptop docking oughtn't to cost much.

If anything, since I hooked the speakers into the audio chain, I really haven't bothered much with audio on my laptop. I really don't miss it at the moment because my laptop is in very close proximity - it's right in the same area as the speakers. If I want to pump some music through the speakers while I am working on my laptop, I can do it through the mix desk. And if I really need to hook it back up to my laptop, all I have to do is hook up one jack and move one speaker. No biggie.
At this point in time, another set of speakers would be a waste.
