I've been hesitating doing this, mostly because of the use of a drum machine. Not much choice in the matter this time around as it was a last minute "hey dude, can I come over and have you record this right away" kind of thing. It's a rather hokey song lyrically, I can't change any of that.

What I am interested in knowing is, no real drums considered, how is the mix, please? What can I do differently to it?

Thank you.

All things considered...not too bad.

:D

A few quibbles...

I think the voice is a bit too far in front of the track...either pushing the track up, or pulling the voice back would help.

The bass guitar is a bit "felt" rather than "heard" at the moment. Maybe losing a little of the low end, boosting some low mids, and pushing the level a fraction will help.

The various guitars could be spread out a fraction...it's all quite mono-ish currently. The echo/delay effect on the intro guitar could be mono...and panned with the original guitar. In other words, make it a "guitar effect" rather than a "mix effect" if that makes sense...

The ride cymbal is killing me...pull it back. Please. Now. Obviously it has to be there...but not nearly as much as it is currently. While you're at it, try and wrangle a little more crack into the snare...it's a little bit "thuddy" now...

The acoustic guitar is a little smooth to my ears. If it has been clobbered with compression, try slacking it off and letting it breathe...or make the eq a little nastier...like the singer was playing it at the same time...but concentrating on his singing, rather than the playing. It could then come up a little.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's all just a little bit too "polite". I really want to hear the singer fight the band a little...give it an "authenticity" like you'd expect of a live performance.

It's just a matter of small increments rather than gross changes...er, except for the ride cymbal

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Tim

Tim, thank you for the ideas. Precisely what I needed to hear. Getting to work on this again this evening.

Tim, I think I got your suggestions in here. I know I got the ride killed considerably! How does this one do getting closer to the changes you were hearing?

And thank you again.
