I want to buy an ok kick drum for the studio. Aimed at roots rock, country, lo-fi etc...
I don't mind if it sounds un-modern and lo-fi...
I ran across this which I could get for cheaps:
A Trixon 20"x16".
264
It's fucking pink with a crocodile pattern. NTTAWWT.
So I started googling for Trixon and found out that they also made cone-shaped and ehh... LSD-inspired kicks back in the day. ????
Check it out:
263
It looks like the kick melted. Good luck finding a head for that one on a sunday morning session when Euro-Dumbass cracks his foot through the only existing head left this side of the atlantic ocean.
So whats the story on Trixon? Crap?

I won't say bottom of the barrel but not that high up on the drum evolution chart but I could be wrong
See if you can track down a mid 60's Ludwig 3 ply (usually dirt cheap)...20" are a little harder to find but they're out there.
hope that helps

I'd say Trixon's should be great in the studio. My experience is that they're fairly dry sounding.
There are problems, though... Since Trixon's European, you might have trouble finding heads that'll fit. It all depends on what year your drum's from. I'm not sure when they switched from metric sized to standard sized shells, but I've got a kit from the 50's with metric sized shells, while a friend of mine has a 60's kit with standard shells. I'm afraid I can't tell you exactly when they made the switch, though...
I'm off the path here... IMHO I think the Trixon bass drum will sound perfect for what you're describing.
If you won't have it, I'll gladly take it off your hands for the finish alone

Aha. I think this one is a 70's model. It says 20x16 inches so I think it'll work.
I'll buy the damn thing. Gay rock bands can now get that pink kick sound at my shop without hurling their own pink kick.
NTTAWWT.
And it's got a crocodile pattern too.
I'll charge more just for that reason alone.

I guess not buying that 6 piece Trixon set I found for next to nothing a few years back was a mistake then.
Come to think of it I might have mistaken the name Trixon for Trixie, which were bottom of the barrel.
I guess we learn something new every day
