I know a decent number of musicians. I also know a decent number of martial artists. Not a lot of the musicians I know are martial artists, but almost all of the martial artists I know are musicians - and the better they are at martial arts, the better they are at music. I am told that martial arts helps your guitar playing, and guitar playing helps your martial arts - I am told that this is because both engage the left and right brain, and require the co-ordination of the physical, emotional, intellectual, and creative aspects of a person.
I'm really curious... How many of you guys do martial arts? What kind? Did it improve your musicianship/engineering skills?

I did Judo and French boxing.
It helped me get my paycheck in some occasions, but my musicianship, I don't know.

What kinda musicians are these martial arts friends of yours? Not that there's anything wrong with martial arts, but I'm pretty sure there are other and better ways to stimulate your body and musicality without fear of damaging fingers and whatnot...

How ya been... Still get an opportunity to play with BC? Hope so...
Funny you should mention Elvis... He did Kenpo... I have had the opportunity to work out with David Stanley, Both David and Elvis were taught by Ed Parker, who developed the system. I've have had the opportunity to jam with a couple other Ed Parker students
from back in the day, and I understand that a few of them were guitar players.
In the martial arts I have met a couple of commercial studio owners, a couple indy band members, a multi-grammy winner, and a bunch of guitar players.

I understand Carl Palmer was, and maybe still is, Karate Man. The rationale being in part that it strengthened his peripheral vision.
I can sort of see the point... if you believe those kung fu movies out of Hong Kong, it increases your peripheral vision until you can see out the back of your head and no one will ever take you by surprise again.
I could be wrong.

I've studied Karate and Aikido. Don't know if either of them helped my playing, but it was easy enough to compare the disciplines between the two. Learning a martial art is a lot like learning a musical instrument.
Ultimately the goofy shoulder I got from growing up as a bass player caused me a lot of grief while studying martial arts, and I had to quit.

Drummer John Blackwell said in an interview that martial arts have helped him a lot with playing drums. In this video you can clearly see some martial arts influence:

I bet that pussy used gloves! :Coolio:
Martial arts is surely good fitness/balance/concentration/diciplin training, but for anyone who makes a living from 100% functioning fingers I'd suggest something a little less risky on those, or other vital body parts. What you might gain from martial arts "musically", I'm sure you would get from tai chi, yoga etc and general physical training. For those who can afford a hurt or broken finger now and then, go ahead :Coolio:

This reminds me of a good one :
Two old friends meet on the street. They haven't seen each other in a while.
- Hey man, how's it going ?
- I'm doing fantastic. You remember I play guitar, right ? Well I met this girl who plays the piano, she's awesome. So we're living together, AND we're doing a music project together. I'm so happy, it's really bliss. You gotta come around our place sometime, we'll play you some of our tunes. But how about yourself ?
- Couldn't be better ! You remember I was into martial arts, right ? Well I met this girl who's into martial arts too, she's unbelievable. So we're living together, AND we're practising our martial arts together. I'm so happy. It's really bliss. You gotta come around to our place sometime. We'll beat the shit outta you.

Does beating the fuck out of loudmouths with a piece of hickory count?
It's about my best move, short of gunfire.

It does if it works out to a paradiddle.

Aha.
Almost like Muay Thai with a french elegant touch.
We had a Muay Thai/Shooto night at the club a couple of weeks ago.
Muay Thai was entertaining. Shooto was not. They stood up for about 10 seconds then they started wrestling and nobody could see what was happening.

I studied as a youth..
Eagle Claw Traditional and Jeet Kune Do....
a total of 8 years... (my parents said it was for my own safety)
Does it help you as a musician...
Not if your in a competitive "art" or if sparring is part of your training....
It screwed up my guitar playing a bit.. (shattered knuckle)
Dislocated fingers too..
I've dislocated my knees on several occassion outside of the being knocked unconscious...
Pick an art that focus' on kata's....
Im left handed so I can't say it helped me in accessing my right brain though I believe I've probably diconnected a few synapses from rough play....
I'd say playing drums is a safer alternative to martial arts, make the kit a lefty and just force yourself to do it...
Yeah... you'll be a retard at it but after a while you wont...
