good morning class.

Time to cover some of the basics of Mixology. To do this, we need to examine some of the common mix types to be found out in the world today. Here's a few:

1) "the Paper Bag Mix" -- this inscrutably-titled mix is named more for the ability of the mixer, than for the style of mix. Its a shorthand for "that hack couldn't mix his way out of a paper bag."

2) "the Shake-'n-Bake mix" -- this ubiquitous gem is the style of mix that you get when you combine a mainstream pop/rock major label offering with an "A" list mixer (*cough* lord alge *cough*).

3) "the Shower Mix" -- see Charles Dye upstairs.

4) "the Kitchen Sink Mix" -- in Webster's dictionary, see "Aardvark".

5) "the Hydraulic Press-Brake Mix" -- applied to any heavy or light metals, results in a uniformly precise dynamic range within .002 tolerance. Ask Pimp-X

6) "the Vinyl Mix" -- eh....forgot to calibrate those meters, right? admit it, you FORGOT.

ok, class, who's got more?

The Committee Mix: Band was present in control room throughout the process. Mix also took about three times as long to complete.

I don't want to play favorites in class...but I think "the Committee Mix" trumps "the Consensus Mix".

...because it really isn't consensus...its a camel

I refuse. End of story. If they don't feel they can trust me to at least get a good rough going, I tell them to get someone else.

when you work in Audio Post for TV, you don't have a choice Otek. It's that or go home broke.

Yup.

Brother Fajita speaks the truth.

I output a camel every damn day.

Leaving your ego at home is a pre-requisite for working in post.

Cheers,

The Committee Mix: Band was present in control room throughout the process. Mix also took about three times as long to complete.

However, there's different kinds of Committee Mixes.

# 1 - The 2, 4 and 6 piece band Committee Mix
This one is the most annoying as it could end up in a draw everytime they have to vote for something. If your lucky, it turns in to a real brawl and one member quits right there in the control room which brings you to:

# 2 - The 3, 5 and 7 piece band Committee Mix
Democracy at work. Much easier.
Unless there's one guy who always says "uh... I dunno" everytime something is voteble. Then you're back to # 1 again.

You Like to Play Favorites!!!!

especially with Otek

Though I might clarify for extra credit....

Committe Mix and Consensus Mix are slightly different... one involves no real leadership and the other has too many leaders...

Committee mix is more fitting to Cape because nobody can actually come to a consensus. :)

Which begs the question about the CEO Mix.... One man mixing as if the Band was the least important element...

Or the Fletcher Mix... The Mix where the owner of the Shop dictates everything...

And the Slipper Mix.... Whaddya got? 24 tracks of analog kill me..

Concrete Mix.... a Solid mix with no surprises.... aka HoHum Mix

Margarita Mix... Yeah Iv'e has few... So What!

Wal-Mart Mix... PMRC mix as it was known in the 80's... what profanity? This is the diametrically opposed to the...

Good-Fella's Mix... rappers like this one...

I feel like Im forgetting one or two....

My favorite:

The Barney Mix - a mix in which the vocals are so dominant, the music sounds like a dull smattering behind an a'capella performance. Named after the mixes on the TV show called Barney, featuring a large purple dinosaur who encourages children to use their "imgainations" yet refuses to actually write an original melody to go along with his crappy lyrics.

Don't forget the Concrete Mix

in and of itself not a complete mix, it is more a laying of a solid foundation from which to build mixes that may or may not soar to the heavens

The "Why Do I Bother Mix"

The live mix that results from the expectation that the soundcheck is going to even remotely resemble the performance.

Since Concrete Mix was taken you could call this a Foundation Mix.
Similar to foundation garments in description and purpose

Solid Gold Disco Mix - mixed so that artist can lipsync to it while dancing in high-heels.

Also known as the Milli-Vanilla.
