ye, it's not working for me, either. I tried Safari and Firefox on the mac. Maybe it's a mac thing? I can QUOTE the message but I don't see the "answer here" part and if I just type my responses in the QUOTE they are black like the rest and therefore hard to read. What a poop. I guess I'll try the PC

Not much, the private forums are a real blessing. The only improvement might be free FTP space provided, because by sheer luck, all my teams have had someone step up and provide the space.

(general comments)

CAPE is just great fun and a real learning experience where you have to think outside of your own comfortable little box. You also get to know some of the forum members so much better.

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?
Possibly creating teams that may have more or fewer members...perhaps a trio, and a 10-piece band in the same Cape.

---> What have we forgotten ?
(general comments)
Perhaps changing the scheduling from later in the year to it's current time has had a subtle effect that permeates the board. I understand the original timing wasn't great for everyone, but there hasn't been any decent "panty-raids" since Cape III. There has been a noticable lack of toaster-flinging and smack talk threads for Capes IV and V...which was all part of the fun.
All of that helped foster team and community spirit.

Also worth remembering in light of the question on frequency per year of Cape, is the distinct possibility of whacking the lemon too often...and turning Cape into something ordinary.

Cheers,
Tim

None really. I wound up in a group that did not really match my musical tastes or song preference, but that was due to the way I signed up. Next cape I will do a better job picking my position on a team and indicating my musical preferences.

---> What have we forgotten ?
(general comments)

SONGWRITING:
I would like to also see a chance for songwriting collaboration. I have not read all your legal stuff, but given my weak lyric writing, I would like to bring a song to CAPE and have someone on the team (perhaps the vocalist) who is strong with Lyrics on my team with the end result being split credits for song writing.

Very well could be a legal nightmare, so if it does not happen, understood.

TEAM ASSIGNMENTS:
I am new to this, but I would hope that teams are mixed up a bunch year to year. I like the idea that I would be thrown into a group each time with people I did not know.

TEAM PRODUCER:
I really think that this would be a GREAT idea. Either assiging one, or adding that responsibility to the Point Man's list of duties. Someone who has the last say about the arrangement and direction of the song.

ORGANIZED BULLPEN:
It would be nice to have a bull pen for people who have special skills that could be used on projects... On my CAPE there were two horn players... we really should have been bullpen people that the team could have called on to add parts, as it was not a horn driven song. I also thought during the cape that perhaps there were other teams that might need a horn part tracked... It would be cool to have a list of horn, harp, slide, banjo, marimba players listed in some official thread that other teams can contact to say "Hey, we have this midi horn part, could you track the low melody?"

OVERALL:
If you change nothing, this is still a great event. I really enjoyed working with my team and think that we have a respectable finished product that does a good job representing the songwriters vision.

WACKED OUT IDEA:
I have been thinking about the idea of doing a concept album... The concepts are presented and voted on by all. Then the guy or gal that came up with the winning concept spells out the songs for the Rock Opera Masterpiece... like, Teen Wolf: The Musical

1. instrumental, 2-3 minutes long, no drums, heavy on acoustic guitars. Key major
2. Acoustic and voice with hand drums: parents reflecting the their beautiful new child. near end hint that they know something is different about their boy. Key major
3. Full acoustic band: Doctor explaining that he does not understand why the kid seems to act weird every 4 weeks
4. Acoustic voice with hand drums, maybe some light kit drums... Parents noting fur and funny teeth but re proclaiming their love.
5. First time the childs voice is heard, big vocal chorus of kid with family preparing to conqor world. Song feeling is that it will all be OK
6. Start quiet with acoustics kid questioning himself.. song builds he realizes he has super human strength, he is starting to get that he is a werewolf.
7. Full Electric band: Kids at school making fun of the freak
8. Electric guitar and voice: kid realizing he is a freak...

You get the idea. Someone fleshes out the opera, people are assigned singing roles (as in, BonerFarm233 is going to sing the part of the kid, BongWash_TN will sing the part of the Dad...) and then proper song writing and recording teams are put together to do all the song writing and tracking... send to the main characters to sing their parts. Back to the team for mixing, then done.

Like i said, wacked out idea. I am slowly starting to realize that I have entirely too much time on my hands.

later.

How did you first learn about Cape ? (the Womb/other website/friend/other)

Rec Pit announcement of CAPE I.

How many editions of Cape have you signed up for ? (0 to 5)

5.

---> Out of those participations, how many resulted in a completed track ? (0 to 5)

9. I was on, or participated with, multiple teams for a couple of CAPEs.

Have you ever participated in an internet music collaboration outside of Cape ? (yes-no)

Yes.

---> if yes, when did you participate in an internet music collaboration for the first time ? (year)

I guess you mean outside of CAPE, so I'll say 2003.

---> if yes, how often do you participate in internet music collaborations (less than once a year/once a year/more than once a year/several times a year)

Once a year, maybe, counting the numerous occasions a CAPE team found itself with enough energy and commitment to want to do a second tune together but not enough of either to actually see it through to completion. I'd love to see it through at least once to an album's worth of stuff.

Have you ever had to bow out of Cape ? (yes-no)

No.

---> If yes, specify one or several reasons
- lack of time / other commitments
- lack of motivation / lost interest
- bad atmosphere / vibes within team
- lack of communication within team

My own sanctum sanctorum for keyboard tracks, and on occasion a friend's studio for vocals.

---> What was the principal recording medium :
- Daw - please specify software and platform

More often than not, 24-bit 44.1kHz WAV; this time out, 24-bit 48kHz WAV. I record keys in the box using Sonar on a home-built PC via Layla 20; vocals into Cubase VST on Mac via M-Audio 1010 interface.

---> Did you experience any cross-platform file transfer problems ?

No.

What format would you think makes most sense for internet collaboration when tracking ?
- Wav/Aif/Other

Answer here :
For our own amusement, I'd say the lowest we can get away with would be the most time-effective, so that would be 44.1 or 48. If I were doing this professionally and had my druthers I would want to toss the highest quality possible, so maybe then I'd go to 96. I would say 24 bit would be a minimum in any event.

What type of internet connection are you using ?
- Cable / DSL / etc...

Cable.

How did you send your tracks to the team ?
- upload to ftp server
- e-mail
- snail mail CD or DVD-rom

Upload to ftp server.

---> Did you use any form of file compression to facilitate file transfer ?
- Zip
- Rar
- Flac
- Other (please specify)

RAR because it's more pervasive than my usual choice, 7-Zip.

---> if yes, did you encounter any compression/decompression glitches, loss of quality or other problems ?

No one complained.

---> How did the members of your team communicate during the last Cape you participated in ?
(Team thread / private forum / PM / e-mail / IM / Skype / phone)
Answer here :
Private forum hosted at The Womb. Weekly Skype conferences either in text only or voice mode.

---> Specify any problems a team you were assigned to had to overcome - or failed to overcome ?
(members dropout / songwriting delay / technical issues / etc...)

CAPE V saw a member drop out; we merely closed ranks. CAPE I saw our point man fade for a bit when work got to be overwhelming and the guy who stepped up suffered a bit of a public meltdown.

How many editions of Cape would you like to see hosted at the Womb each year (1 to 4)

One is quite enough for my schedule.

---> How many of those editions would you sign up for (1 to 4)

I would sign up for the one I wouldn't mind seeing hosted here.

How long do you think each edition of Cape should last from signup to reveal (1 month to 3 months)

Two months at a minimum, three months tops. You want to keep people interested but not pressure them at the same time-- not everyone who participates is a professional.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?

That would very much depend on how you choose to draw the distinction between producer and point man. It seems to me a producer and a point man would be congruent.

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?

I hadn't participated in any collaborations before CAPE I. That was the revelation for me that I could have fun making music with people I might never meet and (perhaps as important) that viable music could come of it.

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?

Yes, I've kept in contact with quite a few of them, past and present.

Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?

No... but I'm thinking about it.

How would you rate yourself :
- Professional musician (touring)
- Professional musician (studio)
- Professional recordist (studio)
- Professional home recordist / mixer
- Advanced home recordist / mixer
- Hobbyist

Advanced home recordist. I guess I can't call myself a semi-pro musician any more until I start making money at it again.

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?

Themed CAPEs... seasonal material, a specific topic, perhaps covers...

---> What have we forgotten ?
(general comments)

The beatdown of a token noob. Oh wait, that's so four years ago....
Merely quoting the questionnaire didn't seem to want to work for me either. I had to resort to some higher-level kung fu.

2 months...three allows too much time to get off track and one is not enough. Well, 20 days can get the job done in extreme conditions  , but two months would add a comfort level.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?

A producer would be a good addition (it's happened informally in both my Capes). However, rather than an extra person, I would make it either the job of the point person or any other team member who also expresses an experience level with producing.

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?

19. ---> Specify any problems a team you were assigned to had to overcome - or failed to overcome ?

My only CAPE experience went very smoothly. We did have an early drop-out, but we had no trouble covering.

20. How many editions of Cape would you like to see hosted at the Womb each year

No more than two. I like the "event" nature of CAPE, and wouldn't want it reduced to something commonplace.

21. ---> How many of those editions would you sign up for

Every last one.

22. How long do you think each edition of Cape should last from signup to reveal

3 months seems about right.

23. Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?

I think a point-man is sufficient to make final decisions if there's no consensus. No producer (although, I do love to work for/with talented producers).

24. Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?

No, worked out about as well as I hoped it would.

25. Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?

Just through the Womb.

26. Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?

Not recently, but used to gig regularly.

27. How would you rate yourself :

Used to be pro touring/studio musician and part-time recordist. That was before I started raising my family. Now, I guess I have to call myself a hobbyist, much as I hate to think of myself that way (having started playing paying gigs at age 14, many moons ago).

28. What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?

I had such a good experience my first time out, it's tough for me to think of improvements to be made.

29. ---> What have we forgotten ?

Love CAPE, had a blast. Terrific experience. Thanks to all who work hard to make it happen.

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?

I like the idea of each team writing to the same theme.
I am glad this is not a competition with a "winner".
A strong point man/producer can make or break a team.
In recent CAPEs the team has had more input on individual parts than previously. I don't like this. Members should submit what they submit, and the team has to work with it. Input & feedback is alright, but the final decision should ALWAYS be with the player involved.
Tighter timelines.
Writers should not necessarily have a song ready from the start (but then I like that kind of writing pressure).
Writers should be able to collaborate. As long as any ownership splits are clear from the start (always 50-50, for instance).

We took a long time getting to the point of having a scratch version of the song to record with, I think because we were too damn polite and didn't communicate very well. We wasted a lot of time early, and ran out of time late.

Par for the course normality in most Capes, with isolated pockets of percieved disgruntlement here and there.

How many editions of Cape would you like to see hosted at the Womb each year

2--as I think more is just too much on the plate for not only the participants, but for the admin. "Less is More", comes to mind, and I think that less than more Capes per year would also serve to preserve the "specialness" that is the magic of CAPE.

1 for sure.

3 months from start to finnish, (or to Swedish, depending on who's on my team ; ).

Three dropouts. It was QweziRider who managed to salvage the team despite that fact.

Both.

How did you first learn about Cape ?

@ The MARSH

How many editions of Cape have you signed up for ?

3 rounds, 4 teams (Did both Enigma and Milk Carton in CAPE V)

---> Out of those participations, how many resulted in a completed track ?

3 rounds, 4 teams. Batting 1000 so far. :)

Have you ever participated in an internet music collaboration outside of Cape ?

Yes

---> if yes, when did you participate in an internet music collaboration for the first time ?

1998 or 1999, I believe.

---> if yes, how often do you participate in internet music collaborations

As an official event, I'm only doing CAPE these days. However, I'm working with musicians via the internet all the time on non-event-related stuff.

Have you ever had to bow out of Cape ?

No

---> If yes, specify one or several reasons

N/A

Have you been displeased with your assigned role

No. For me it's been the perfect balance of challenge, new types of creativity, and fun. CAPE gets me out of my own personal ruts that I get into as a musician by forcing me to work on something outside my normal scope of things.

To participate in Cape, where do you record/mix your tracks

Own studio (home/project)

---> What was the principal recording medium :

DAW: Logic Pro 7.2 on dual core 2.16Ghz Intel based iMac (for CAPE V)

DAW: Cubase SX on a 2.0Ghz Athlon based PC (for CAPE III and IV)

---> Did you experience any cross-platform file transfer problems ?

Only some 32-bit files that wouldn't open in some team members' DAWs. Easily recitified.

What format would you think makes most sense for internet collaboration when tracking ?

Whatever works for the whole team. For CAPE V we used 24/44.1 .wav for tracking and 24/96 .wav for the final mix.

What type of internet connection are you using ?

Cable

How did you send your tracks to the team ?

Mostly FTP server, but couriered a DVD-ROM to our mixer for CAPE III due to a massive amount of files.

---> Did you use any form of file compression to facilitate file transfer ?

No

---> if yes, did you encounter any compression/decompression glitches, loss of quality or other problems ?

N/A

---> How did the members of your team communicate during the last Cape you participated in ?

Primarily the team forum, but we also used the Chatwomb and Skype on occasion.

---> Specify any problems a team you were assigned to had to overcome - or failed to overcome ?

Only problems I've had is dropouts - singer on CAPE V, and all 3 guitarists on CAPE IV. Both situations were rectified by other existing team members stepping up for additional responsibilities on the song.

How many editions of Cape would you like to see hosted at the Womb each year

2 or 3. 1 isn't enough, and 4 is too many, IMO.

---> How many of those editions would you sign up for

Likely all of them, unless something else has me seriously occupied.

How long do you think each edition of Cape should last from signup to reveal

4-6 weeks. In my experience, all the work gets done in that amount of time anyway... usually the first 3 weeks and the last 3 weeks, or so. It's hard to maintain energy and momentum on sone single song for 3 months. FWIW, Team Milk Carton did it in a month for CAPE V.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?

I thought this was tried in the past and didn't work out?

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?

Yes. It's better than the others by a significant margin. Other online collaborations I've done were jam tracks and hack scratch stuff, just for the hell of it... CAPE raised the bar. Bigtime.

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?

Yes

Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?

Until a couple months ago, yes.

How would you rate yourself :

Professional musician (touring)
Professional musician (studio)
Advanced home recordist / mixer
Hobbyist

Right now "Advanced Home recordist / mixer" and "Hobbyist" are the closest matches, but I have played professionally both live and in the studio in the past.

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?

1. Make it shorter. 3 months is a) too long to keep the momentum up, b) long enough that it increases the liklihood of members having to drop out unexpectedly, due to other things coming up, and c) a long time to keep listening to the same song.

2. Offer a second level of CAPE. Possibly for CAPE veterans only. I think that CAPE is a great learning tool, and has made me better in the studio for sure. You learn a lot working seriously with people you've never met. However, in the "real" world, so to speak, that's rarely the case. You aren't assigned randomly to a session without a producer and given 3 months to get your part down. I think that Advanced CAPE is a more likely spot for the Producer role mentioned earlier... Producer and songwriter get together, decide to do something, and then THEY pick their team, based on genre available volunteers, etc.

Yeah, it's not as friendly as CAPE is, but neither is competing for session work sometimes. Just a thought.. the point is that I think we should keep CAPE the way it is, except shorter, and ADD an advanced version of some sort on top of that. Kinda like a CAPE grad school.

3 months is just about right. No shorter than 2. You will never get rid of that low point in the middle of any project. Not saying it can't be done faster, but it highly depend on schedules and skills of the team members.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?

Depends. That job needs to be done, but it doesn't always need to be another person, or just one person.

Cape IV didn't have any mastering and it I think it hurt the final results a bit. Good to see that it is back as of Cape V.

I think what we are missing is so way to get a lessons learned from the team members compiled and out to everyone.

I do like the fact that you don't know your team until it is announced. This gives a way for new people to work with others that have been around a bit, and also it keeps things fresh.

4

Have you ever participated in an internet music collaboration outside of Cape ? (yes-no)
No

Have you ever had to bow out of Cape ? (yes-no)
No, but it's been close once or twice.

---> If yes, specify one or several reasons
Time - moving, etc.

Have you been displeased with your assigned role
No.

To participate in Cape, where do you record/mix your tracks
Living-room corner studio, because I mostly do bass direct. For CaPE V I dragged my laptop to the office on a nice quiet weekend morning for my other instrument.

---> What was the principal recording medium :
DAW - Ardour on Linux and for this CaPE, OS X.

---> Did you experience any cross-platform file transfer problems ?
Lining up tracks has sometimes been a problem, but otherwise no.

What format would you think makes most sense for internet collaboration when tracking ?
44.1kHz/24bit seems to work pretty well. Anything faster would require a lot more file transfer space.

What type of internet connection are you using ?
Sort of a DSL-ish broadband thing.

How did you send your tracks to the team ?
FTP space.

---> Did you use any form of file compression to facilitate file transfer ?
We used MP3 files for throwing around ideas and basic tracks, then uncompressed WAV files for final tracks.

---> How did the members of your team communicate during the last Cape you participated in ?
Team forum here in the Womb, Skype calls, and maybe a few emails.

---> Specify any problems a team you were assigned to had to overcome - or failed to overcome ?
One member "dropped out" right before final tracking, but his existing tracks were usable as-is. Then we had that whole drummer-in-disguise problem last year. And there's always some kind of drama, though usually not too hard to get around.

How many editions of Cape would you like to see hosted at the Womb each year (1 to 4)
Maybe 2 - certainly not more than that. With 2 I'd probably stay better in practice in between projects.

---> How many of those editions would you sign up for (1 to 4)
One or two.

How long do you think each edition of Cape should last from signup to reveal (1 month to 3 months)
I like the current schedule.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?
No.

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?
It's not only possible, but good!

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?
Not really, aside from being around these forums. I've had former teammates on later CaPE editions.

Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?
Rarely.

How would you rate yourself :
I'm a hobbyist as a live performer, but I work in live sound so to me it's part of the career.

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?
Maybe a small-team version, so we can do some simpler productions?

---> What have we forgotten ?
Not much - it's a work in progress, though.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?

I have mixed feelings towards having a producer (artistic) in teams. In certain situations, especially when artistic decision making is delayed, it would force someone to take the role if it didn't happen naturally, which is a good thing. On the other hand, it has been fascinating to see how the teams have handled the decision making part without an assigned producer and what methods the teams have used (and what have been successive and what not).

So, I think, I actually would like to see CaPE to go on without an assigned producer, though it probably would prevent at least some of the problematic situations - at least if the producers were well chosen and the team members would trust his/her opinions (which has also been an important part of assigning the role inside the team to some person or procedure).

How did you first learn about Cape ?

Through Herr Schliperstein's thread from the PSW days

How many editions of Cape have you signed up for ?

1.

---> Out of those participations, how many resulted in a completed track ?

1.

Have you ever participated in an internet music collaboration outside of Cape ?

Many, but none on nearly as professionaly standard as Cape.

---> if yes, when did you participate in an internet music collaboration for the first time ?

Uh...2000? Posibly earlier? It was a LONG time ago. http://www.mellowland.org/TA/mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid=54 is the kinda stuff we used to do - lo-fi (like 22KHz was a HIGH sample rate!) "tracked" (not in the sense of the word as we understand it here) metal songs. Impulse Tracker, FastTracker, ModPlug Tracker etc etc. The scene's been pretty dead for a few years, but some of the old guys hang on in there. It was all free and for fun, not even remotely pro (some of the songwriting/recording was impressively bad, often intentionally so). Regular "disks" were organised where a bunch of people would track stuff and it would all be released together; guest vocalists and guest guitar solos were commonplace, but it was rare that anything else was collaborated upon. E.g. you rarely had more than 2 people involved in any one song, often a guitarist (who did everything bar vocals) and a vocalist.

---> if yes, how often do you participate in internet music collaborations Years back it was probably once every 3-4 months, but Cape is the first one I've done for the past 5 years or so.

Have you ever had to bow out of Cape ? Nope.

---> If yes, specify one or several reasons
N/A

Have you been displeased with your assigned role Nope. I woulda liked to be songwriter, but meh, guess everyone would :) It was an education to take someone else's song and mutate and then record it for a change.

To participate in Cape, where do you record/mix your tracks
- own studio (semi-pro...currently somewhere between "project" and "pro"...)

---> What was the principal recording medium :
- Daw - Steinberg Nuendo, PC

---> Did you experience any cross-platform file transfer problems ? Nope; file format details were all agreed well in advance. Some people forgot to include the sync click though...

What format would you think makes most sense for internet collaboration when tracking ?
- Wav
- Sample rate according to mixer's choice and FTP speed I would say. 96KHz files up to a very slow FTP will spell the end of the project.

What type of internet connection are you using ?
- Cable

How did you send your tracks to the team ?
- personally, upload to ftp server, but others had to Skype them to each other.

---> Did you use any form of file compression to facilitate file transfer ?
- Zip

---> if yes, did you encounter any compression/decompression glitches, loss of quality or other problems ?

Not as far as I know

---> How did the members of your team communicate during the last Cape you participated in ?
Mainly private forum, Skype once a week, occasional phone.

---> Specify any problems a team you were assigned to had to overcome - or failed to overcome ?
members dropout (we ended up using programmed drums)

I can't think of anything else that really held us up.

How many editions of Cape would you like to see hosted at the Womb each year (1 to 4)

I think maybe 2 would be enough. Any more and people will be struggling to keep up; everyone in this business is always very busy, and as a result it's possible for those who wish to participate to make time every 6 months, but e.g. every 3 months might be pushing it. I get the feeling if Capes were more regular that "attendance" would drop...

---> How many of those editions would you sign up for 4. It was a fun thing to do, and a great learning experience. At the moment I have more time to spare than usual, so I would gladly participate in as many Capes as I could.

How long do you think each edition of Cape should last from signup to reveal (1 month to 3 months)
Perhaps another couple of weeks longer than whatever this time's limit was. I think the intermediate deadlines were perhaps a bit skewed - I think we ended up with only a week to get the thing mixed (this may have been our own fault, I can't remember what the exact deadlines were). If I had been mixing I would have probably preferred a little more leeway in case anything went wrong that stopped me from achieving it.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?

Good question...to which I don't know the answer. I think the addition of a producer may well lengthen the whole process quite a bit.

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?

Not particularly. It's pretty much the same deal as what I used to do years back, just on a far more pro level.

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?

Nope :P My own fault, I haven't opened up Skype for a while.

Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?

Yep.

How would you rate yourself :
- Professional "project" (home is the wrong word - I have a studio in a rented office that I am slowly building up to "pro" standard) recordist / mixer

I'm not quite making enough money as a musician to qualify myself as a "pro" musician, although I have the musical skills to do it. I just refuse to play popular music :D

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?

Um...make cowbell use a requirement? Ban amps that only go up to 10?

I was considering the mastering side of it, but I'm yet to hear Bob's masters (which I'm sure will be awesome), so I'll keep my trap shut. I kinda liked the idea of each team mastering it's own stuff, but meh. Maybe it's better with one (vastly more experienced!) person doing it all.

nope - other than the odd file lineup issue. easily corrected

WAV at 24bit/44.1 but I can work with other file types/formats

What type of internet connection are you using ?

DSL

How did you send your tracks to the team ?

FTP

---> Did you use any form of file compression to facilitate file transfer ?

sometimes, sometimes not. Used RAR when I did.

---> if yes, did you encounter any compression/decompression glitches, loss of quality or other problems ?

nope

---> How did the members of your team communicate during the last Cape you participated in ?

Skype, team forum, pm

---> Specify any problems a team you were assigned to had to overcome - or failed to overcome ?

bit of a language barrier with one team member (most of us were from USA, she's Francolingual) but got help from Malice and the delightfully goofy free internet translations. Never mind - it wasn't a problem. It made it MORE fun <g>. In my opinion, language shouldn't be viewed as a barrier but a bridge (ooh look at me all philosophical and forward thinking...)

How many editions of Cape would you like to see hosted at the Womb each year

2 tops - but possibly compress the time frame. Also would like to see more spontaneous collabs from forum members (I'm pretty sure many are already happening but there's not much mention of it on the collab forum)

---> How many of those editions would you sign up for

all of them (2)

How long do you think each edition of Cape should last from signup to reveal

2 months (I realize this may not be possible for many)

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?

Nope - but we should formally name one or the other as producer and include that in the signup. Another person as producer means another iteration of decision making and it would slow things down.

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?

Hell yes!

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?

yes

Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?

yes

How would you rate yourself :

professional home recordist/mixer (I try to get paid and I'm professional in my demeanor), somewhat advanced musician (I'm seldom paid because of the situations I put myself in, but I'm a competent player)

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?

shorter time frame, shorter sign-up period and some limitation of participants. I guess just scope-reduction overall before things get too outta hand.

---> What have we forgotten ?
(general comments)

We better not have forgotten that this whole event is some kinda magic. An absolute gift from the cosmos that's been made available to us through divine fortune and a LOT of hard work from the organizers and participants.

Drummer droped out (we ended up using programmed drums)

How many editions of Cape would you like to see hosted at the Womb each year (1 to 4)

1 or 2 should do it.

How many of those editions would you sign up for

If things keep going the way they are, I may have time for zero. I'd definitely still like to do 1 though.

How long do you think each edition of Cape should last from signup to reveal (1 month to 3 months)

1 month. I think that time schedule is tight and challenging, but the middle 6 weeks of Cape seem useless anyhow. Not much is being done, and there doesn't seem to be any real urgency.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?

Don't think it would help. The "design by committee" approach really hurts the timeline of CaPE at the moment, but having a final voice calling the shots might really get some people pissed, especially if you're the one who is sucking.

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?

Nope, it's all in good fun.

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?

Certainly. I still keep in touch with teamates from CaPE II even.

Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?

Yep.

How would you rate yourself :

Hack musician, mixer and recordist.

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?

More whores and coke in the bathrooms please.

What have we forgotten ?

All the organizers have forgotten to give themselves a great pat on the back for once again putting together the teams, schedule and timeline so that all of us out here in the ether of the internet world can get together and make music together.

I salute you.

nope

---> if yes, did you encounter any compression/decompression glitches, loss of quality or other problems ?
We probably hung on to mp3s too long (read above). But then that reflects that our song became way too lastminute.com

---> How did the members of your team communicate during the last Cape you participated in ?
(Team thread / private forum / PM / e-mail / IM / Skype / phone)
Team thread/skype/email/good ol fashioned telephone

---> Specify any problems a team you were assigned to had to overcome - or failed to overcome ?
(members dropout / songwriting delay / technical issues / etc...)
technical issues of members' equipment falling over were the primary hold-ups, but various members also got too busy

How many editions of Cape would you like to see hosted at the Womb each year (1 to 4)
1-2

---> How many of those editions would you sign up for (1 to 4)
probably 1, but depends on how busy I am

How long do you think each edition of Cape should last from signup to reveal (1 month to 3 months)
4-6 weeks would be good - it's too long currently, because people loose interest/become too busy

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?
It would make things more "effective" but totally change the character of it. I think it should be kept "explicitly" producer-less!

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?
Yes

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?
Yes, I've started recording an album with one of them!

Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?
Yup

How would you rate yourself :
- Professional musician (touring)
- Professional musician (studio)
- Professional recordist (studio)
- Professional home recordist / mixer
- Advanced home recordist / mixer
- Hobbyist
Professional singer-songwriter: touring/studio

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?
Make it shorter! The time-frame is currently too long, to my mind, and people lose interest and focus a bit, and other commitments intrude. If it was shorter and people had to know that they had significant time available over the short time, I think it would work better.

---> What have we forgotten ?
(general comments)
This was a fascinating and amazing experience which I learned a tremendous amount from. It was not without difficulties, and perhaps the outcome had its flaws, but I made friends, had a jol and enjoyed it! We had to smoke virtual fatties, though...

3 months actually worked out well for the team to get acquainted, pick a song, arrange, exchange tracks, then mix. However, it might be interesting to have a Cape "sprint". Throw teams together and see what they can do in a month.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?
It might make for a more real world experience. But then it might be a pain in the butt.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?
Hmmm...tuff question. One of the challenges with CaPE is to make a song collectively, within the team. But how about making it an option?

The team can decide to produce the song together, or pick a producer within the team. Or - opt for an external signed up producer?

Some kind of time limit for calling in an external producer would probably have to come in question here, to not make producers life a living hell. Say after max 1-1,5 month of a 3 moth CaPE round?

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?
Yes. Three quick things comes to mind...

1. It can be done!!
2. The results can be very, very good. Actually brilliant in some cases.
3. For us hobbyists the learning factor is great!

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?
Yes

Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?
No

How would you rate yourself :
Something between...
- Advanced home recordist / mixer
- Hobbyist

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?
Cape in the current form? I really don't know.
Maybe small things like provide filespace for teams if that is an issue.
Maybe present the finished cape songs in a more "stand alone" way, like on a website either within this domain or on myspace / similar place?
But I think cape in it's current form should remain close to what it is - a fun time (at least) once a year to meet new musicians and make music together. And learn something from it.

But......and I'm shure I'm blinded from this years smooth experiance that cape was...:-) But anyway:

What about once...at least once....with a future cape, raise the bar a bit? Set a goal from the beginning - other then that each team shall come out with a finished song at the end of it.
Like - we are going to make an album. A charity album? An album loosely based on some theme/concept/thought?

It will have to have another longer timeframe. And a producer. Maybe even let the different teams work together to solve upcoming problems. And it certainly will make people who like to sign up for it to think two three times extra before they do...:-)

---> What have we forgotten ?
(general comments)

To sit down....relax. Open up a beer and maybe have a whisky on the side, and take credit for a another great cape round...

Cheers!!

Yes.

---> if yes, when did you participate in an internet music collaboration for the first time ?

If just sending tracks via ftp instead of physically delivering the media qualifies, maybe around 2004 or something.

If only a CAPE -like collaboration, with people i only know online counts, 2006.

Once or more a year. The trend is upwards.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ? I think we're good the way it is. Somebody, usually the mixer or the pointperson generally step in and take charge if it's needed.
Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ? Nah. I had done a little of it before, so I already knew it could work. However I was surprised at the scale of this project, and the fact that you don't get to pick your team, and how well that has worked over the years.

How did you first learn about Cape ?

I learned about it from this crazy friend of mine they call 'Goes211'. He told me some of the best engineers, writers, and musicians were here (the Marsh at that time), and he was right.

How many editions of Cape have you signed up for ?

4, beginning with Cape II.....played guitar on 5 teams.

Out of those participations, how many resulted in a completed track ?

5

Have you ever participated in an internet music collaboration outside of Cape ?

Yes, I had collaborated online with over 40 artists before I came to the Marsh/Womb, prior to doing any Capes.

if yes, when did you participate in an internet music collaboration for the first time ?

Probably 2001.

if yes, how often do you participate in internet music collaborations

I am constantly involved in online collabs.....I have 4 going.

Have you ever had to bow out of Cape ?

No.

Have you been displeased with your assigned role

No.

To participate in Cape, where do you record/mix your tracks

- own studio (pro)

What was the principal recording medium :

Daw - PTLE7

Did you experience any cross-platform file transfer problems ?

No.

What format would you think makes most sense for internet collaboration when tracking ?

Wav/44.1 kHz seems to be the most universal at the moment.

What type of internet connection are you using ?

Cable.

How did you send your tracks to the team ?

WAVs sent via ftp.....some mp3's sent via Skype.

Did you use any form of file compression to facilitate file transfer ?

Occasionally will use RAR to send large files/entire sessions....and I use the others to unzip files sent to me.

if yes, did you encounter any compression/decompression glitches, loss of quality or other problems ?

No.

How did the members of your team communicate during the last Cape you participated in ?

Private forum for the team in general.....but, Skyped quite a bit too and made a few phone calls.

Specify any problems a team you were assigned to had to overcome - or failed to overcome ?

...

How many editions of Cape would you like to see hosted at the Womb each year

One.............2 or more feels like overkill of a good thing to me. There is a reason why there is only one Academy Awards, one Master's Tournament, etc, a year....if these were held twice or more a year, it would dilute their significance.

Plus, Cape should not be the only reason to pull collaborations together......there are some great writers, musicians, and engineers here. It's all about communication.

How many of those editions would you sign up for

I won't know until they come up, but I may have to bow out of the next one.

How long do you think each edition of Cape should last from signup to reveal

It's been fine as is......but if it were to change......2 months, I guess.

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?

No.....to me, the point man's job is to keep the herd moving in the same direction and get them there on time. The Mixer IS ultimately the producer in this online Cape situation, since he gathers the tracks sent in and mixes ALONE. That is not to say that he shouldn't listen to production suggestions from the team members (especially in early ruff mixes) ... I've made my ideas known to each of the mixers I've worked with, but then ultimately, I leave it in their hands.

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?

Hmm.......it's just galvanized the idea that it's a very good thing.

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?

Most of em, yep......(crazy bastards, all of em..... )

Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?

Occasionally.

How would you rate yourself :

- Professional musician (studio)
- Professional recordist (studio)

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?

Bob O. did a great job this year with an overwhelming amount of mixes, and his work is very much appreciated.......but I don't think that all the mastering duties should be delegated to one person again, simply because things 'come up' that cause long delays, as happened in Cape V.

Other than that, I probably wouldn't change anything major. I'de like to see eShaun continue to oversee and represent Cape as he has, because he's done a superb job. There are gonna be 'problems' regardless. It's all about communication.

That would be fun. Maybe replace point-man with producer.

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?

YES

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ? Not really. Might be different if any of the teams I've been on communicated via voice. I don't IM or email much

Shit, as many as you can pull off.

---> How many of those editions would you sign up for (1 to 4)
At least 2 as long as Bubba don't get mad.

How long do you think each edition of Cape should last from signup to reveal (1 month to 3 months)
2 months seems reasonable

Do you think a "producer" should be assigned to each team in addition to the mixer and point-man ?
Sure!

Has participating in Cape changed your view on internet music collaborations ?
Made me realize it is possible to have a meeting of the minds but no meeting.

Have you been in contact with former teammates since Cape ?
Got drunk at the Rib Shack a couple times, yup.

Are you a performing musician - do you play live gigs ?
You damn betcha.

How would you rate yourself :
- Professional musician (touring)
- Professional musician (studio)
- Professional recordist (studio)
- Professional home recordist / mixer
- Advanced home recordist / mixer
- Hobbyist

- Professional musician (touring) But not if I have to make a living at it to qualify. But damn, don't call me a hobbyist! I got SCARS.

What are your suggestions to improve Cape ?
Get us a hit.

---> What have we forgotten ?
