View Full Version : Northwest Passage 2

Greetings all,

I'll probably move this thread down to the C&C forum soon (since it is, in fact, about collaborations and connections), but here's a general "call for participants" for our second Northwest Passage gathering. We got together last time in late March, and I think all of us (there were seven of us, I believe) had a great time.

I have spoken with Archtop, and he's more than happy to make his place in Stanwood, WA available again. This time, I'd really like to get a jam session going. I was thinking we could all chip in $20 to Archtop and possibly record a bit of it? Details can be sussed out later.

Anyhow, we're looking at doing it in July or early August...so if you're interested, and in the Northwest, feel free to chime in with the best weekend available for you, and we'll see where it goes from there!

Sounds great. I'll try and make it. July 21-22 is probably not going to be good for me. We have some other family camping stuff planned. I'll have to go to the wife for full schedule info.

As recently departed, but I would argue meriting 'honorary PNW' status, if it's at a time that I happen to be up there, I'd be in big time.

July 21- 22 is definitely out for me also. Booked a long time ago.

Alright...so July 21-22 is out. How about July 28-29 or July 14-15?

I really hope Hrasco can make it this time. Last time I felt really bad about arbitrarily picking a date that he couldn't make it.

If you really find yourself short handed for bass or guitar (yeah, right) let me know. I'm sure you'll probably attract enough local talent to get the job done. It is a long drive from Portland, OR but definitely do-able with adequate warning under the right circumstances.

I'd love to meet some of you characters face to face and enjoy some quality non-verbal communication as well.

It sounds like fun!

PacAir...we're glad to have you join us regardless. I'm sure there will be some "musical chairs" happening as we'll likely have three keyboardists as well, so I don't imagine we'd just stick to some kinda diagram as to who-does-what-when.

C'mon over, bring your axe, down a few beers, shoot some shit, enjoy the gentle Northwest air as twilight approaches...

It's all good.

Besides...Archtop has a great studio. You never know...you might want to record there someday.

Before this thread falls off the page, let's pick a date in advance for the next one. I'm thinking maybe the second weekend of July?

Thoughts?
i'd be in for early fall sometime...summer's tough for me...but i think if the boys get together in july there might still be some alcohol left over? ok.....maybe not....

just kidding you a bit...i knew when you made the suggestion months ago that i couldn't make a summer party...i'm just sad.

Aww...surely you can take a day out of your most busy schedule to hang out with the locals.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if we did this on a somewhat regular basis anyhow...so who's to say we can't get together again in autumn? I'm having an affair with Arch's piano, so any time the two of us can get together is sheer bliss. Thanks for the invite... I wasn't trying to push through the "velvet rope" ("I'm with the band...") as a newcomer to this forum but appreciate the welcome. It sounds like a great opportunity and a fun time!

The July 28-29 weekend would work best for me as well... a family reunion on 7/22 and 2 back-to-back gigs on 8/4 would serve as pieces of bread for the delicious meat in the middle! I'll watch for a date determination.

Did I just call this event a sandwich? I couldn't come up with a workable beer reference before I had my morning coffee!

Amen, bruddah. Indeed...not to open up invitations to other people's homes, but there are a few folks who live in Arch's vicinity...I'm sure you could crash at a home for a night or two. I'll probably do that myself, just to save the hassle of driving back across the border late at night.

Not sure where the nearest airport is, mind you. Possibly Arlington? Everett?

As for that first Mixerman party, it's so hard to believe that it was back in 2003...at Jimi Hunter's girlfriend's house, no less. Boy do times change...

i don't have to play keys, i can be yet another guitarist or bassist, vox, whatever.

or not.

i don't suppose me playing anything would be of real benefit to the forward and timely progress of any recording session, so i can get coffee or go on beer runs for the actual artists. just let me hang and watch, cheer, root, anything. maybe for 50 bucks arch will let me hit the record button once or twice, kinda like putting on the siren on a police ride-along. woohoo! we're doing something!

and so i will attempt to come up with a convincing lie to my wife, ditch work and show up drunk at 4am saturday the 28th.

see ya then.

Bah!

I figure it might as well just be a lengthy drop-in jam session. If Arch feels so inclined, he can put up a few mics and hit record on his PT rig, then separate wheat from chaff at his later leisure. Or we could just jam for the sake of jamming. Either way, I'm sure there will be some booze involved, as well as camaraderie and no shortage of impressive musicianship.

I for one am looking forward to it. :Coolio:

(uncrosses arms and laughs a little...)
No, but seriously, I'm scheduled to be in the PNW the 17-23rd. I don't expect you to change the date or anything, but alas, that's when I'm going to be there. That doesn't rule out showing up on the 28th, but maybe makes it less likely. As things are constantly changing in my schedule right now, I promise I'll keep you updated Archtop about the possibility of my showing. I'd love to, definitely, even though "somebody, oh, SOMEBODY" already claimed dibs on the piano... I guess I'll have to sing... oh, wait, Carlo's probably already got that way more than adequately covered... triangle? Can I play triangle? Cowbell? Bassoon? Tuba?

Sorry for the delay in replying to the RSVP call! The short version is that I will be unable to attend after all...

My original schedule had the Northwest Passage 2 event shoehorned in between 2 other events in which I was merely a participant whose only responsibility was to show up and have a good time. This left me with a free weekend in which to drive 8 hours and perhaps throw a few notes (and/or beers) down with you guys.

My August 4th event (a large outdoor Alumni BBQ event gig) was recently transformed into the proverbial 800 lb gorilla :icon_eek: when I was "elected" to be the music director / organizer for our portion of the event entertainment.

This multiplies my involvement by at least a factor of 10 since I now am responsible for ensuring that a 12-14 piece band can play a 50 minute set (for an 800 person audience) at an energy and performance level that won't embarrass anyone while still providing solid entertainment and crowd participation. This is going to take some work as only a few of us play together on a regular basis and some don't even play regularly at all!

I was waiting to reply until I had to abandon the luxury of pretending that I could do both events. It is obvious that this moment has arrived.

Sorry, I was really looking forward to the opportunity but this other event involves lifelong friends and family so it must take precedence. Forgive the lengthy reply... If nothing else it makes me feel better that I communicated the whole story and didn't just blindly bow out. I truly am disappointed and hope to have another chance at it.

Archtop... you can ask me anything at all at any time (I presume you looked at the website...cool) about anything I can help with. I don't profess to be the world's authority on anything but I am always happy to contribute what I can... probably a few extra rounds of beer at the next such get together as a newb's penance for stiffing you guys this time around!

Hi Everyone,

It is Mrs. Archtop here, I have just been gettin a line up on the attendees to the big shin dig and it sounds like we'll have a fine group of.....up standing citizens. We definately subscribe to the "more the merrier" philosophy. So don't be shy, we'll be bummed if you can't make it.

It looks like I have St. Rob, Carlo, Stoner, KwikSilver +3 and Fizbin, e-Shaun, and zenpool1. If any others are bringing family or I'm missing anyone, please give us a reply. (it is never too late to reply)

I know everyone is looking forward to jammin, but I'm hoping some of you might be good for a game or two of volley ball or bacci ball. We have baseball mits for catch and lots of other fun things to do. I mean we are having a picnic right?

We have an above ground pool for the kids. Our boys love it. So have your kids bring their suits and a towell.

We also have the awesome fire pit for singing around the campfire.

As for the BBQ part of the function, we will be serving burgers, dogs, and a few other various meats (we love dead red in this family) If you would like to pitch in either a bag of chips and dip or a salad or something feel free, but not required. And for the tasty beverage part of the function, you're on your own. We'll have some pops and waters, but I am not sure what everyone else will want for the more spirited refreshments so I'll leave that up to your own tastes.

If you are a vegetarian or have any foods you can't eat, please let me know, I don't want anyone going hungry on my shift.

Oh and if you have a lawn chair feel free to bring that too. We tend to run low on those.

The invitation does extend to anyone who would like to stay for the night and spend a sunday morning breakfast with the family. Archtop makes a mean pancake and bacon breakfast. We have a couple tents that you can borrow or bring your own, what ever you prefer. They'll be here for your use. 1st come 1st serve.

So the big shin dig starts around 2:00 on Saturday and goes till I kick you all out on Sunday. (Work always starts too early on Monday)

We are all looking forward to everyone enjoying lots of good music, good friends and definately good food with us. We're glad you have all agreed to share it with us.

Thanks and see you all at the party!!!!

Oh and by the way this is my first post ever, did I tell you I was wordy?

It's a great honor that the whole Archtop family has made an event out of this little gathering...so thank you very much, Mrs. A.! Indeed, a few weeks ago I learned that I had a high school reunion booked for the same day, and I didn't even give a passing thought to skipping this event for that one. I had a great time last time, and I can only imagine that this one will be that much greater.

For the record, I think Em's friend Lisa (who was a "booze bearer" last time) may be coming along as she lives relatively close. Also, you may want to have Archtop double check with Hank Rasco, as I'd hate to see him miss a Northwest gathering twice.

Thanks again, and see you in precisely two weeks!

Mrs. Archtop-
Thanks for including the noob, but my daughter had the
nerve of making me someone's grandfather this week.
She needs help moving into her new apartment,
so i'm over the mountain to Spokane that weekend.

'Looking forward to meeting you all (eventually),
participating in Cape VI.

If any of you find yourself in the Gig Harbor/Fox Island
neighborhood, I'm good for a beer or 12.

Well, it's 3:30 pm the day after, the last person just left, what a hoot we had.

Most of us were/are seriously hung over, 'cept the smart kwiksilver family, and my wife, 'cause, well they're smart.

Maybe when my vision starts to come back, and senses regain there senses, I'll be able to recall a few tales.

I really only remember being blown away by fizbins voice
and guitar chops.
And st Robert, not only is he incredibly handsome, he's
like fizbin, awesome voice AND great guitar chops.

But mostly we just picked on Carlo, 'cause thats just fun.

Stoner was the great campfire sing along leader, I don't remember him being able to sing, but he sure did good last night/this morning.

We were goin' strong till 4am

I would definately invite everybody there in to my home again
anytime, very cool people.
I might stop drinkin' a little earlier next time, but now I can say I've officially had a hangover, my first.
I couldn't have picked a better group to have it with.

You really ought to see that St Robert, his name should be
Mr. Handsome.

Man it's fun to pick on Carlo :)

It was really great to see everyobody, some again, some for the first time. What a great bunch of folks! What a hangover! OMG it hurts. That and while I blew my voice out by 10 pm we continued to sing drunken campfire songs until about 2 am, and didn't get to sleep until around 4.

Also, a thank you must go out to Archtop's very understanding, or deaf neighbor.

Oh my Lord...my Lord...I'm so hung-over...I can't begin to say enough thanks to the Archtop's, for their GREAT hosting and hospitality...Judy, thanks for making us all feel like stars!

it has been said before, but it definitely bears repeating that archtop is one of the most generous classy people i have ever had the pleasure of meeting. he is also blessed with the fantastic mrs. archtop who treated us all to food, drink, good conversation and humor. once again i feel as though the womb has given me something of great value: the hospitality of it's members.

i got there at around midnight and started catching up to carlo in the inebriation department. (i will admit that i failed in this, yet i reckon my head will probably pound for a good two or three more days.)

i was met with warm handshakes and welcomes as if we had known each other all our lives. amazing. here we are, strangers, potentially sociopathic strangers at that, and we all just knew everyone was cool without thinking about it. thanks to all for the good time and the open arms.

sorry about any inconvenience my drunkenness may have caused. i don't think i pissed in the sink but i can't be that sure.

it's probably a good thing i didn't wear that backless dress. you would've flipped.

'Thank you so much' too the Arhctops for their hospitality, kind words, and gift pack's.
Campfire songs are fun.
I was not as hungover as last time, just that 4:30 AM came way to fast.
Nice meeting those I had not met before, and good too see the ones I had met before.
Thank you all for having me.

Mojitos...Apple martinis...kamikazes...beer...more Apple...more vodka...ohhhh.

I think my scorecard read something like:

Beer = 1
Mojito = 4 (possibly 5)
Appletini = 4 (possibly 5)
Tequila = Hearty swig from bottle

I think that as the night progressed, the booze-to-mix ratio reached something like 70/30.

Good times!

Well, the kwiksilver family took their time going home. We crashed at a hotel just south of Olympia. Slept in to make up for the sleep we didn't get the night before. I finally got to work about 12:30 p.m. today

Archtop and Judy's hospitality was incredible. We had a great time. My son enjoyed their son's company.

Yeah, I paced myself with the drinks. Hate getting drunk. Sure is fun to watch everybody else getting shitfaced.

But it didn't stop them from playin' some good music.

Hangovers - 6

Wow! It sounds like you guys really did it right! Congratulations on surviving the event.

I did notice that in the initial reporting of the drunken aftermath no mention was made of the hosts' Sunday morning breakfast (so highly advertised as a key feature of this all-inclusive jam vacation package). The morning-after breakfast is a pre-emptive strike against the days of misery that could follow the evening's excesses (although it doesn't do much for the Dog and Squirrel things, though).

If more Canadians got involved it could possibly degenerate further into a "Moose and Squirrel" thing (delivered in my best cartoon Russian accent). [Sorry, I couldn't pass on that one, it was too easy and doesn't come along all that often.]

I can understand an embargo on photos (a REALLY good time need not be documented unless compromising circumstances with animals are involved) but will any of the jam tapes ever surface? If they are good enough I suppose they might even be used for a Cape VI submission but I suspect they sounded better to the participants as they were being recorded.

I find myself wanting to sincerely thank the Archtops for a great weekend with unparalleled hospitality and I wasn't even there!

Maybe next time (lucky stiffs)!
