View Full Version : Best Definition of a Hit Song!!!!!!

It's pretty simple really, a hit song is a song a lot of people really like! In most cases this means:

1. it's simple enough that it's really easy to learn the first time you hear it

2. it's deep enough that it doesn't become boring the second time you hear it.


There are a million different ways to accomplish this however it's not as easy as it sounds because most formulas only address the first part.

It was written somewhere else but I thought it needed to be repeated.

As a songwriter I couldn't agree more.

This is related to my definition of a hit record:

Hit Record:
A recording that earns a profit for everybody involved. Hits are the whole point, the very bread and butter of the record business!

Stiff:
The opposite of a hit. A recording that loses money.

I've always liked Lee Abrams definition of a hit song....

"Hit songs are those songs that are the most important to your audience."
