Man, i gotta tell you, i'm really diggin listening to all these songs and then reading what the really keen ears have to say... i've learned more in the last two weeks in this one forum than in the last.....well, really long time....

Anyway... I'm gonna take another stab at posting a song. All of these are really kind of 'demos' for the demo... all of the vocals will be re-tracked eventually, arrangements will be reviewed, re-mixed etc. So i'm looking forward to more insights and opinions on the mixes, the songs, performances, parts etc. Whatever you hear that you think can be improved, say so.

We WILL redo them and re-submit eventually. I wanna make it on the Rotation Station!!!!!!

thanks..
Andy

Intro guitar...very HONEST. a nice HONEST bit of guitar. refreshing.

Only one complaint. The 2-buss compressor is breathing too much. The drums are modulating the vox. That's not acceptable.

VERY NICE shape to the verses...the slow rises in harmony and melody...slices of sweet ripe honeydew.

Impeccably competent arranging shape of emotional energy.

DO take care of the bass clams at 2:53-3:00. They woudn't be clams but for what the singer is singing. bass HAS TOBE subordinate to the vox.

I absolutely LOVE hearing all the little "flubs" that are left in here...a couple of occasions where the drummer clicks sticks...etc. I makes for a REAL sound.

2nd listen:

(gonna have to wait for a minute or two...my wife is belting out a John Denver tune on the Steinway... )

Awesome... thanks d...

Ok, I hear the compressor, especially in the choruses. So.... how do i fix it? is it the release too long? threshold to low? ratio to steep? I'm still trying to get a grip on it. I'd love some guidence there....

Next, I will expose my complete naiveness and have you explain to me what a clam is... :icon_eek: If you could include the etymology back to the Latin or Greek, that would be helpful....:very happy: Once i know what it means, i'll go fix it.

finally, since I'm playing all the parts, you'll quickly see that I'm a Master of NONE of them. I can guarantee there's LOTS of flubs in this song, and every other one, for that matter..... thank god it seems to work... :D

just be thankful there weren't any geoducks in there.

although the addition of mussels with some white wine garlic sauce would have been a nice touch.

From a pure listener's point of view.

Alanis on her third record (JLP) meets Elliott Smith just before he leaves this mortal coil. Due respect to both artists and to you.

Very connecting and convincing stuff.

This is, pardon the expression, the shit.

Ok... haven't had time to fix the bass yet, but i wanted to try to address the compressor issue. I dumped the 2 buss and took a whack at parallel compression here. first try.... so, here's a quick comparison.... just a verse & chorus....

better?

worse?

equally bad?

at least going in the right direction?

thanks....Andy

Nope... not real.... it's a stock patch on my trusty old Korg N364, plugged right in, and played live. no MIDI or sequencing here.... :D

Love the song man!

Snare needs to come down some in the verses IMHO. It's about the right balance during the choruses. Ride it down in the verse, and up in the chorus.

I think the lead vox needs a tab bit of trimming in the lower mids, and could use a bit more compression during the chorus section. It just pokes out a little too much.

The 2 buss comp didn't bother me a whole lot, although I tend to smash the fuck out of everything, so that's my taste.

2nd listen now, I think the overall drum group could come down just a smidge.

Thanks, gang ...for taking the time to listen and help. We appreciate all you have to say. I gotta say, i really feel out of my league around here. You guys are all in real shops with real gear and real chops, (yeah, I heard your shit, Volt...HOT) and i'm over here screwin around on an outdated 16 Korg Standalone, with no outboard whatsoever. So, to have you cats take the time to listen to and comment on our little effort is really pretty cool.

I'll work on touchin this one up and post some more tunes. I'm sure i'll get the crap kicked outta me sooner or later....

Hell Yes!!! Terrific!

I tell you what, I gotta stop worrying about what gear I don't have and get on with making music. Outdated Korg standalone? Who cares!

How'd I miss This?

It's Killer. It's just a really Great song. You did a fantastic job.
The drums sound really musical to me and I'm grooving on her Plaintive kind of Alison Moyet like delivery.

I was very bummed when it suddenly went EOF

Respect!

What the HELL? it cuts off because apparently only 75% of it uploaded.....

Glad it wasn't a list of 10 steps needed to dismantle a bomb or something...

'step 9: the color of the next wire to cut is........'

lets try again.... shall we????

EDIT: quick file check... all seems to be well now.... Thanks mous & Calvin for the heads up and kind comments..... you guys rock... :D
