"Made easy."

THE performance: The elusive. One can only hope that when they get there they recognise it.

It's an odds game, but fortunately those of us who get in on a project early can up the odds greatly. The most bang for the buck in the odds game comes from fresh.

To explain how one captures fresh varies immensely, sometimes it's fresh exuberance after finally solidifying a great idea, other times it's walking in after a day of poker and hitting the downbeat immediately upon arrival and so on...

First of all, games of poker, while undoubtedly enjoyable by nature, can and will be problemtatic when one is dealing with a loser. Or, a winner...

Assming the poker game is over and the band is going for the first take what are the best oddmakers we can execute before that game is done?

So many methods, now let's think.

This is the hardest thing to stay on top of.

If this makes any sense, ideally the band should not be aware of the fact that this is "A TAKE".

Sometimes, the band will jam spontaneously. Sometimes, they will jam on one of their own songs. Sometimes they will even jam on something they are about to record.

I always try to get those jams on tape.

I try my best not to announce the fact that I am in there keeping the red light on and fiddling with sounds. I don't want them to start thinking about what they're doing, or thinking about the fact that they're in a studio, on the clock.

There is no sure-fire way of bringing this mood on, but I find it usually happens after the band has been on a break, or doing something not directly related to the recording process.

If there are preparations or tweaks needed to be done, I try to get them in as early as possible, so that when that magical moment happens, I have all my ducks in a row.

There is a bit of Murphy in all of this, of course. If you've got the big room set up just so, you can bet dollars to donuts that the song will happen in the kitchen. :D

Just be prepared for any eventuality, and don't be afraid to hit record at any time. The "right" sounds and the tweaks are of little importance when the magic starts to happen.

Don't sweat it. That's what we keep Aardie around for. He'll have it covered.

And you can count on him to serve up the perfect wine to compliment the take.

Then, of course, he'll erase and redo all your parts. That's just part of the complete package.
