Greetings folks,

In the very near future, the Womb staff will be trying something new by starting up a weekly trivia thread in Bob Olhsson's forum. The trivia question will be placed in its own thread at Bob's, and then locked, at which point you'll be moseying down here to take a guess at the answer to the question.

There won't be any "prizes" to begin with, but perhaps if this catches on, that's a possibility for the future...

These aren't going to be simple questions either, as you will soon see. In other words, "Pete Best" isn't going to be one of the answers.

Anyhow, this is a work in progress, but to start off with, I'm asking just for answers, rather than a ton of commentary. That may change in the future though, depending on the question. Have fun!

Sticky Fingers.

Who was the fluffer?

Who was the guy in the jockey shorts?

It was not Mick on the cover.

The zipper ruined many of my albums.

Damn it!

Compte is correct, I think. It was either Sticky Fingers or Pete Best. I wonder why people think Warhol was gay?

Who was the guy in the jockey shorts?

It was not Mick on the cover.

That's actually a much better (tougher) Q.

Even young guys like Compte and I know which album cover it was.

I never said they'd be difficult. However, that WAS a little easy. But hey, you know, we need to get warmed up here.

Anyway, anyone that wants to forward Trivia Questions for me to put up, just PM me, I'll give you credit for the question.

Still laughing. I love it.

That's the bitch about submitting a question. But that's a good one.

If you guys don't start giving me some more, my next question is going to be . . . What band was Peter Gabriel in before going solo?

Then they start getting easier.

You have been warned.

More to the point: it happened about ten miles from here, in Lompico. The finger was never found.

Jerry Garcia was missing most of his right middle finger. How did he lose it?

He was flipping off Pigpen, who promptly threw his Hammond at him. The digit in question got caught between the falling organ and one of Owsley's scales on a nearby lab table, and was eaten by thousands of those little fruitbats that were constantly swarming the band.

Weir was later heard to exclaim, "Clean this mess up, else we'll all end up in jail..."

Er... no?

If I were to admit to knowing how many chord there are to careless Whisper i would also admi to doing a Disney artists production of the tune for a Far-eastern B-side for her debut single over there.

So, in essence of fairness I will recuse myself from answering the question for fear that I may be associated with once again contributing to the Universal Karmic Debt in such fashion as to also admit, uh, nevermind.

I will raise you one Dmin7 and add 9 before going to the river.

I will raise you one Dmin7 and add 9 before going to the river.

Ah, ah, ah. You know the first chord of the song (although I don't think there's a 9th in it). Are you a closet Wham! fan? Come on. Be honest.

No matter what you think of Wham! or George Michael, from a pure songwriting and production perspective, the song is an interesting study. I'll go into detail as to WHY it's an interesting study tomorrow after the answer has been revealed.

My taste in music is very eclectic, and has much to do with my appreciation for a well-written song. One could just look at my discography to determine that. I'm all over the map where my work is concerned in musical genre's and styles. I prefer that, because I don't like being pigeonholed, and I don't want to make the same record over and over again.

Now, it's unlikely I'll go and put that Wham! record on purely for personal enjoyment. But I DID listen to it last night in forming this question, and it was an interesting production. As a recordmaker we need to be familiar with all music, and all production styles when we're going in to work with artists. It just makes us stronger in what we do.

For me, I was a teenager at the time that record came out, and I have fond memories of being on the dance floor and copping my first bonafide feel. So, yes. It's a Wham! question.

Enjoy,

Never heard the song,

And a song with only one chord might actually be construed as some sort of musical acomplishment, so...

Two.

Closet? More like, public restroom.

I can only remember the song's chorus (four chords). Are the versus the same chords?

What was that high end on the vocal sound? Was that the old Dolby card trick?

I agree, GM's a brilliant, hard working, musical cat.

To be honest, I always dug this tune and like you would never put it on but when I hear it there is a draw.

Dm7(add9)-Gm7-Am7-Bb7-
am7-dm-am7-Bb7 uhhh

Later in the tune I remember the Dm7 losing the implied 9 and falling into a darker straight D minor.

The chord cycle is tricky although seems easy. It cycles in a fashion that took me some time to sort out.

Sometimes it goes to the sus chord. I forgot to say "barring sus chords" in there too. They definitely diguise the chord cycle to kep it fresh, but it is clearly the same basic unchanging cycle.

Guys, this is such a disapointment.

St. Paul Peterson was lead singer (and keyboardist) in a band call "The Familly" along with Suzanna Melvoin, twin sister of Wendy Melvoin who was guitarist of Prince.

The band held three members of "The Time" in their ranks, wich explain my previous comment about "getting closer".

The version is so unfuckinbelievably beter that Sinead'o'Conor's one, with amazing strings arranged by the great Clare Fisher.

St Paul Peterson seems a bit taller than Prince, but his singing is about similar.

I leave the Prince trivia to my wife.

Now if I can score a backstage pass somehow to one of the puple ones shows so she can meet him and I can watch her get freaky nervous, it'll all be complete. The front row tix for the last Atlanta show were awesome but it was a let down when he handed his guitar to the chick next to me.

Trivia Guru

here's Bob's story:

My mentor Cal Harris interned doing the Beach Boys at Western and then did a lot of the groups overdubs at a nearby studio when Western wasn't available. Ultimately he worked at Gold Star where he tracked several of the Good Vibrations takes that the final record was assembled from.

Cal told me about how they used delayed and fed back echo chambers on both the Beach Boys and the Phil Specter records. The problem I found was that this way of using an echo chamber didn't really translate to stereo at all.

It's sad that apparently Brian thought his preference for mono was because of his hearing loss.

Classic case of band signing their life way only to be royally screwed by (in this case) Fantasy Records.

Bob Olhsson
December 20th, 2006, 04:33 PM
There is another side to the Fogerty story.

Fogerty was a kid who worked in the stock room at Fantasy Records and was not a working musician who had a solid fan-base. Fantasy was venturing way outside of the only market they really knew, jazz, and there was a large risk that some well-known popular artist would cover the band's songs leaving only writer's and publisher's income as a return on their investment. Just like any other label, Fantasy was unwilling to invest in a complete unknown without owning the music publishing on the songs as a means of covering their bet. Even so, the first Creedence hit turned out to be a cover.

After the band fell apart and there was no more gig income, Fogerty insisted that he ought to have the publisher's share of his material returned and refused to write or perform until Fantasy turned it over to him. Saul Zantz, who had supported Charles Mingus financially during his darkest moments, saw no reason to hand it over to a young millionaire who couldn't even hold his band together and seemed unlikely to ever have another hit.

Because you named it, he fucked it.

Men, women, dogs, cats, dead poultry - I mean it was dead after fucking it anyway, door handle, kitchen utensils, vegetation, protruding end of a balustrading, bumper post, Lou Reed...

The guy had the itch.

You don't need Bob Olhsson to know all that. It's common knowledge.

A little more trivia to go with PRobb's question.

The song was actually co-written by Al Kooper and two others several years prior to Gary Lewis and the Playboys recording.

Al Kooper actually hated that version of the song. He recorded his own version years later.

Actually, he also lost his job as an electrician's apprentice, something his father was unhappy about (though not for long).

That reminds me of a joke:

Teacher: "Johnny, what has wings and flies?"

Johnny: "A fly."

Teacher: "Wrong, it's a bird, but I'm glad to see you're using your imagination."

Johnny: "Whats long, hard and in my pants?"

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, by Billy Joel.

Back when he was writing good songs, too.

Easily my favorite song off my favorite Dire Straits album. And the video was a work of art, too; the lighting was just superb and atmospheric.

Of course Watershed has the advantage that it is already tomorrow when he posts.

No idea on the first album side, but the second would be Boston's debut album (Smokin', Gonna Hitch a Ride, Something About You).
I'll try to field the easy, bottom feeder stuff, while you guys with functioning brain cells tackle the esoteric ones.

THIS BAND TOOK THEIR NAME FROM A CITY MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM...WHEN THE TRANSIT COMPANY THREATENED TO SUE THEY SHORTENED IT TO WHAT THEY'RE KNOWN AS NOW...

I do believe that would be Chicago, once known as Chicago Transit Authority.

OK, this is a guess.
If it's correct, I've never heard of the band, but the only McCartney pseudonym I know that could be a band name is...

I think this one is REO Speedwagon....

Which triggers another story in my feeble brain... on the live version of 'Ridin' the Storm Out', Gary Richrath does a feedback/toggle switch thing on his Les Paul. In my teenage drinking-and-driving days, on my crappy car stereo, that noise sounded like a police siren, and made us all panic EVERY STINKING TIME the song came on. In the 8-track days, we didn't have the option of fast-forwarding.

Okay, we figured it out eventually....

Correct spelling is Lynyrd Skynyrd,

and the teacher was Leonard Skinner, as Lynyrd Skynyrd's album title said: "Pronounced leh:nerd skin:nerd".

Just in case PRobb's mis-spelling doesn't count as a correct answer...

Pretty sure that was Chicago.

Although it might have been the Atlanta Rhythm Section.

Or was it the New York Dolls?

Maybe the Detroit Cobras?
