So this is it ... the final phase of the first MiX iT event Sponsored by Kagi Media (http://kagimedia.com/) and Auraleo Advanced Learning (http://auraleo.com/).

MiX iT #1 : PoLL iT

Guidelines

In this thread we want you to post which mixes you value most and why. Please remember that the MiX iT Event is first and farmost an Educational event.

We want you to list a maximum of 3 Mixes and tell us WHY you chose to list them.
It is very important to realize that these do not have to be what you think are the 'best' mixes.

The criteria for listing your mixes can be anything :

- The mix YOU learned the most from for example ?
- The mix that surprised you most ?
- The mix that had the worst vocal sound ?
- The mix that was the most dynamic ?
- The mix that got the best discussion in the discussion threads ?
- The mix that was .... whatever ....

Please limit your participation to this thread to 1 POST

Timeframe

1 week, starting on Tuesday August 25 2007 until Tuesday October 1 2007.

The Mixes can be found in the Post It (http://womb.mixerman.net/showthread.php?t=4427) thread and in the Recall It (http://womb.mixerman.net/showthread.php?t=4460) thread.

Thanks,
Charles & Chris

MKZ- guy to watch! Great vibe and ear deserve reward
Magichord- Honesty and musical value deserve reward
waterboy- momentum and swing deserve reward

These are NOT the best mixes, Skwaidu and Mixerman and some others won that. These are the ones with the most promise and hope for the future. These are the guys to watch :)

I think there should be a reward for those of us who fully participated in all aspects of the event.

Just throw money and recording contracts...

- The mix YOU learned the most from for example ? CFH 13
- The mix that surprised you most ? Evil Jack
- The mix that was the most dynamic ? Squaidu
- The mix that got the best discussion in the discussion threads ? Squaidu
- The mix that was .... whatever .... Mixerman, Squaidu, Evil Jack, and CFH 13 were the best in my opinion. There were some other good ones, but these stuck out in my head the most. Also I did like Captain Hook's.

After a while it's kinda hard to listen to the mixes anymore. After so many times the song gets kinda old. Like any song I guess.

I also agree with Mixerman that the arrangement could have been better. I feel there should have been some more instrumentation to pull things together a bit more. The guitar parts are cool but I think there should have been more hook driven parts.

This was a blast! My first time to mix something I didn't track and it's a whole other world doing that. Look forward to the next one.

Ok...my .02 cents

I really liked Skwaidu's mix. very dynamic:Thumbsup: the mix was exciting, it kept my attention...I like to hear the aggressive guitar parts sound,...well, aggressive! :very happy:

I also really liked CaptainHook's mix as well.
also very dynamic, all the way around a very solid mix.
I couldn't find anything I didn't like about it....right in the pocket:Thumbsup:

The mix that really surprised me that was quite a bit different from all the rest (in a really good way) was by KPHeyes. (although the wind noise at the end was a little extreme) it was a very colorfull wet kinda mix. I thought the drums sounded great.
A very spacious sounding mix:Thumbsup:

Another vote for Skwaidu. Those guitars sound great!

most educational.... i would say was IntelDoc and Skwaidu based on the actual mixes and the extensive discussion of their mixes/techniques in the other threads.

I'd also like to tip my hat to ChrisJ and Ryst for taking the time to comment on so many mixes. I woulda hoped there were more posts like theirs but then again, I know it's really hard... the best I could do was comment on 6.

We were all supposed to do something like that. Maybe it just didn't seem important enough... you ended up getting a picture of how a few of us treated events that WEREN'T terribly important or paying gigs.

Dude, I promise I work even HARDER for money :D

Hmm, Chris L, Charles D, and any other mods involved didn't do that. What made you think we were all supposed to?

Mixes that sparked discussion were discussed, and vice versa. All questions posed were answered, weren't they?

Cudo to those who chose to write something about every mix. I listened to all of them, quite a feat in itself after mixing the damn thing. that usually means I've heard the song close to a hundred times already. Comments from me could not possible have had any value other than my own biased perspective.

Some mixers acheived things that I couldn't. Some made choices that I wouldn't have made.

I gave it my best shot. I completed the task on time, and for me, that was reward enough.

I probably won't do this again. It takes too much of my time to do it justice.

I really wanted to participate more in the discussion thread, but I got overwhelmed with (payed) work just as it was starting!
I was pleased with my own mix in terms of balance and the arrangement decisions (and I stand by the delay effect on the vocal :Coolio: ), but IMO it sounded a bit 'thin' against Squaidu's and Mixermans (MM there was no need for the 'can't polish a turd' apologies - it was awesome!).

I'm not used to mixing real drums, so I definitely learnt a lot from Squaidus session - particularly the amount of multing that needs to done on a real kit!

I'll definitely try harder in the next round

Ditto.

To the point i can't participate in this round of cape which
i REALLY want to. I think in essence of what this was about,
i would say i failed as i didn't see it through to the end.

I still haven't even listened to all the mixes at the studio
where i can trust what i'm hearing so i still can't fairly
comment. Bunch of balls on my part.

But as with cape, sometimes real life commitments take
over. Sorry to Chris and Charles and everyone else, i'll
try better to see this thing through if(?) there's another one.

IMHO thumbs up for Skwaidu because of the transparency, clarity and the guitar sound! Well positioned instruments, balanced, great mix!

I liked the guitar automation in BadBoys mix, that stood out for me. I felt that with most of the other mixes the guitar balance was a set and forget affair (my own included mind you!). Unfortunately I felt that overall the mix was quite thin and lacking in punch, especially the drums, and that it suffered from a case of 'reversed dynamics', the 'loud' bits actually sounded quite a bit quieter than the 'quiet' bits.

Skwaidu's mix stands out as being the most discussed! It was also one of the most professional sounding mixes to my ears. I'd have been more than happy to get that from the studio if I was the band! I did feel there was a little too much compression on the drums, but I'm really picking at hairs there.

Special mention to Mixerman for some very educational posts in the discussion. I learned a lot from reading them.

I felt that with most of the other mixes the guitar balance was a set and forget affair (my own included mind you!).

On a couple of the guitar tracks and BGVs it sounded like they were playing/singing different parts on the same track to save time and not go over their budget, which I don't think was a high one. On those tracks, I don't think you had much choice but to ride the levels.

Oh, I suppose now I'm officially late to download all the mixes, so I can't poll...
Well, therefore instead of polling I would use my post to say thanks to the mods for this exciting event (and help with uploading my stuff), to Ryst and ChrisJ for taking their time to listen and judge all the mixes and to everybody who participated!!!!

Hi everyone,

Time to wrap up this first MiX iT event Sponsored by Kagi Media (http://kagimedia.com/) and Auraleo Advanced Learning (http://auraleo.com/).

Charles and I would like to thank each and everyone of you participants in this event. The success greatly exceeded our wildest expectations and motivates us into taking it to the next round : The MiX iT Event #2 but before we get there we need to announce who gets the Mix It Like A Record and Hustle Harder DVDs, generously offered by Kagi Media (http://kagimedia.com/)

So, Charles and I skyped about it last night and we came up with a name.

Danbee

Our motivation ?

Danbee's participation in this event is a perfect example of how an online discussion cycle like this one can be of great educational value both to the community and to the individual participant.
The amount of information shared in the discussion threads is priceless.

When talking about it last night, Charles and I concluded that Danbee's participation, if one thing, stands for progress.

He was an active part of every phase of the MiX iT Event #1, showing the enthusiasm to mix and recall his mix while participating in the discussion threads throughout the cycle. And while there are plenty of other participants who did the exact same thing, we think Danbee's participations stands out by the progress he made as a mixer goes through throughout the event. One can hear the progress in his recall. One can read the progress in his posts. Here, in our opinion, is an individual eager to learn. He absorbs the info provided by others and tries to put that info to practice.

Danbee, a very sincere thank you from Charles and myself for taking part in this event and congratulations.

And thanks again EVERYONE for your participation!! This 1st round was more successful than Chris + I thought was possible. You all were great + you made a hell of a lot of great posts dissecting this song + mix.

Best,
Charles

Big thanks to Charles and Chris for running the event, it was good fun and I did indeed learn a lot :)

I keep checking to make sure my eyes aren't deceiving me. And I totally expect the next post to say 'No, not you danbee, we mean the other danbee, the one who *can* mix.' :D
