CAPE 6 : Musicians signup thread
http://womb.mixerman.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=3305&stc=1&d=1191685657
Welcome all musicians !
By now we're guessing you have read the Cape 6 announcement thread, if not, please do so HERE (http://womb.mixerman.net/showpost.php?p=76604&postcount=1)
before you sign up. And these are the actual guidelines :
CAPE 6 GUIDELINES :
Musicians must first sign up in this thread. They must copy/paste this :
I accept and I agree to follow the CAPE Guidelines.and place it in their post to sign off on the terms of participation (see below) and guidelines
IF YOU DON'T, YOUR SIGNUP WILL NOT BE VALID
We have asked songwriters to submit songs...we have over 30 songwriters and almost twice as many songs ready for perusal by our producer applicants.
We will announce the selected producers and the teams on October 27, 2007.
The selected producers will then act as de-facto point-men for their team. Each team will receive their own private forum.
The producers will NOT have to use each and every performance by each and every player.
However : producers may NOT bring in ringers or ancillaries. The final result should come from the performances received from the players within the team.
Tracking deadline is Sat Dec 1st
Mixing deadline is Sat Dec 15th
Reveal will be on Sat Dec 29th 2007
Musicians & mixers signing up for this edition of CAPE should try to put themselves in the shoes of session cats. You will be a hired gun. Seeing the producers may choose NOT to use your parts, your goal should be to work with them until they are satisfied. Make your parts fit the puzzle.
Imagine these producers are going to call you again for more work if they're happy. So what's true for the producers will be true for the musicians & mixers : you're going to have to try.
Alternatively, don't throw a hissy if your parts aren't used. Name any A-list top-gun session cat and we can almost guarantee it has happened to them too.
It's part of the game. Better luck next time.
On to the signups, and the self-rating system. When signing up, you will be asked to state your abilities & evaluate yourself by using one of the definitions stated below.
The traditional definitions are the following :
Adequate – You can do this well enough without embarrassing yourself publicly.
Skilled – You are more than capable at this, and have been known to turn heads.
Gifted – You are good at it, you know it and all your friends will tell you the same.
Maestro – You are a golden god, or at the very least show exceptional ability in this.
Try to be objective. Overstating your ability may result in putting yourseld AND the team in a difficult position. Please note stating your location is important. Don't forget it.
Here's a sample entry :
name : Goes211
location : Brussels, Belgium
Vox - Gifted
Point-Man - Gifted
Guitar - Skilled
Mixing - Skilled
Bass, keyboards - Adequate
Ukulele - Adequate
I have 2 Gb web space.
preferred genres : Soul - Funk - Pop - Rock - can't do Metal (don't have the pipes)
Once CAPE 6 is over, we are going to put the finished songs on our very own Cape Radio (see top of page). To that effect, please read these terms of CAPE Participation :
Terms of CAPE Participation
By not opting OUT I have agreed:
1. I accept and I agree to follow the CAPE Guidelines.
2. I will submit only what I have the right to submit.
3. I agree that any submission to CAPE and any Sound Recording thereof, may be aired and made available by Mixerman Multimedia Inc. on The Womb and mixerman.net for a period of no less than 1 (one) calendar year from the closing date for submissions.
4. If after 1 (one) year I want to make any changes to this Agreement, I may submit a writing requesting changes to: wombadmin@mixerman.net
5. Unless I request changes to this Agreement (see 4 above) the right to air (see 3 above) will automatically continue.
6. If I am a member of a Performing Rights organization, or under contract, I have obtained any necessary permissions to participate in CAPE, given the terms of this agreement.
7. I understand and agree that CAPE is a self-defined on-line collaborative community, and is not a commercial venture and has no employees; that CAPE participation is voluntary; that CAPE has no responsibility for the behaviour of any participant; that all disputes about the process or handling of any submission shall be resolved by the CAPE administrators (see Guidelines) to the best of their abilities.
8. I agree to hold harmless CAPE Administrators and Mixerman Multimedia Inc. for any and all eventualities of my voluntary participation in CAPE.
This concludes the Cape Guidelines.
While the emphasis is on the songs and the producers this time, it doesn't mean there can't be a good team spirit. Cape has traditionally spawn camaraderie and in some cases enduring friendships. It has also been the stage for heated debate and controversy. To ensure objectivity, we will try our best to help you out in case of a dispute. No-shows, bad attitude, any problem hindering the process should be brought to our attention. PM dwoz or myself (Goes211) and we will look into it.
Each team will get its own private forum visible only to them and Cape committee members (and of course, Womb admins). Use it to communicate. Don't hesitate to post there. We will use the team forum to evaluate disputes and solve problems.
And also...
We would like to encourage teams from all audio fora to participate in CAPE 6. They will have to pick a song from the WombTunePool and do their CAPE communication right here on their private Womb team forum, but if they so wish we will try to group participants from other audio fora together.
There it is folks ! I raise my glass to a succesfull Cape and I am eagerly looking forward to hear the resulting songs !
Let the games begin !

I played acoustic guitar on Cape 4 Team Habitant and Cape 5 Team Homestead. My voice and other noodlings can be found in both the Cape Songwriter's forum and in the Songwriter's Challenge forum.

I accept and I agree to follow the CAPE Guidelines.
Hi, I'm Fulcrum.
I play keyboards, or rather numerous soft synths. I'm skilled.
I sing, too. I switch-hit as a tenor on one side of the plate and a baritone on the other. I'm skilled either way.
If you feel inclined to second-guess my self-assessment, and frankly why wouldn't you, go up to Radio CAPE (on the scribble strip at the top of the page) and listen to Teams Conspiracy Theory, Industry, Galactic, Artisan, Mercury, Solar, Womb, and Resurrection to hear shining examples of boards bashing and vocal cord exertion.
I have no genre preference. Plug me in and I'll make myself fit the surroundings.
And you won't be sorry.

I am hoping this will be my second CAPE. I was the singer for Team Azimuth (CAPE V) if you'd like to hear some of my work.

Not afraid to step into a style outside my comfort level though - not one bit.

I played the big brown box in all 5 Capes prior, and have had the amazing fortune to play with some very talented folks. I'm hoping numero 6 will be as fun and productive as the rest have been for me. genre stuff is damn near anything that the organ would work with. Not picky, but no Eb shit.
thanks, and let's do this!

I'd like to play guitar on my team if picked as a producer. If not picked as a producer I'd like to either play guitar or sing on a team - one that doesn't pick one of my songs. (as if that's likely)
Guitar - gifted in a right-part-for-the-song kind of way. Can often pull off a killer solo with a bit of flash, but I'll never be Yngvie, nor would I really lean in that direction.
Vocals - skilled to gifted depending on the song. Can hit some pretty high notes but not for the whole song - whole song upper register-ish is OK though. Can cover baritone material just fine too.
I like pop, rock, and pop rocks.

ld. vox; gifted to maestro, with the caveat that I am mostly a baritone ( check out team zodiac for a good idea of range)
bkgrd vx: giffted, I do a lot of session work for bkgrds, have a good sense of harmonies, and a good range, with a good falsetto.....and for reasons unknown, I blend well ( which would not be obvious from my ld vx...)
guit: adaquate to skilled - good parts player, not particularly flashy- elec and acous, nylon, resonator
Bass: adaquate to skilled - good parts player, not particularly flashy-
drums: adaquate +, very straight ahead player- no cool licks to speakof, but can keep pretty good time- been in the drum chair for a couple of capes, i think because e-shaun was desparate.....
I've got server space, but it's a pita to open up to anyone else's use, according to my web mistress.... but if it was needed, I could have her set up ftp.
I'm not much good for metal, rap or prog, since I'm kinda slower as I've gotten older....

I accept and I agree to follow the CAPE Guidelines.
name: Immanuel
location: Aalborg, Denmark
Lead vox: Skilled, goes from baritone to pretty high tenor, can make some kind of odd sounds too, if needed.
Backing vox: I have never done this, and I don't think it is the right situation to start doing this.
A&E rythm guitar: Skilled, capable of being groovy on odd meters too, if needed.
A&E solo guitar: Skilled, the fewer chords in the backing, the better - maybe reaching gifted in some places.
I have no larger web space.
Preferred genres and personal style:
Vocals: I really perfer to sing an emotional expression more than to sing a style/genre. Of coarse, I might do the latter to a sertain degree, but most of the time it is not my main goal. Expression vice, I am willing to go anywhere; soft, tender, moody, aggressive, painful, loving (happily), loving (with sadness) ... whatever. I might do some stuff better than other, but I will go in any direction needed for the song and the producers idea of it. Stuff with a high focus on pollished aestethics will likely be taken better care of by someone else.
Guitar: My background is pentatonic stuff. I never lost my love for the (harmonically) simple stuff, and I never got into more (harmonically) complex stuff like jazz.
I have played African (Ghanesian) percussion music for 4 years, but I don't sign up for perc, because I wouldn't be able to deliver a good enough recording quality. Othervice I would have signed up as adequate.

Grumpy veteran of CAPE III, IV and V (Mixing, mixing and guitar, mixing).
Preference (you guessed it):
Mixing - maestro. (It's slightly dependent on the position of the moon.)
The other stuff I'm really rubbish at:
Electric guitar - adequate. Creative, but not a particularly tight player.
Ukulele, glockenspiel, kalimba, mandolin, melodica, bombard and other horrible miscellaneous instruments - adequate in tormenting them.
Genre: anything except rap. And if you dare say reggae, I'm going to have to kill you. I'd prefer non-metal this time. ;)
Don't have webspace (yet). I do have my own mix room.
Looking forward to this, as always!

Bass Guitar (fretted & fretless) - Gifted
Background Vox - Skilled (Wide baritone to tenor range)
Lead Vox - Adequate to Skilled (depending on genre)
Hand percussion, Handsonic - Adequate
Guitar - almost Adequate. I always have ideas and I just might do in a pinch.
I played fretless & fretted bass & did some BGVs for CAPE 5 Team Resurrection.
I don't have any webspace, but might be able to get some if needed.
preferred genres : Rock (Classic, Prog, Folk, Country, even 80s hair band metal), Pop, Motown, Blues. I prefer things with some groove and feel to 'em.
My regular gig has me singing lead about 1/2 the time and playing bass all the time. One of the reasons I do CAPE is for the chance to stretch a bit and work with different people and in different styles & contexts. I always bring a good attitude to work, and will do everything in my power to make your song great.

Preferred genres: rock, blues, alt-country, R&B, funk...anything that a B-3 fits well into. I'm interested in laying down some Hammond.
I've never done a CAPE collab before, padboy talked me into it. :) I have done online session work for a jingle producer I used to work with in Michigan. I play Hammond and occasionally bass at my church and play keys and guitar in a regularly-gigging cover band, and have many years of Hammond and bass gigging under the belt.

guitar: gifted (acoustics and electrics at disposal)

drums: adequate (barely)
other instruments I have that I can make noise with: ukulele, tamborine, shaker, umbria, harmonica (key of C only, I can bend notes!), keyboard (cheap yamaha), ocarina, fisher price xylophone (if my daughter lets me borrow it), kazoo (I can also play the raisin box, and blades of grass)
I have filezilla. Barely any web space at the moment.
*edit* By next week I should have around 1G.
preferred genres: I'm a beggar, not a chooser! I will say this: when I was a kid I played in a lot of heavy bands. Now I mostly mess around with rock/pop/alternative/weird stuff. Anything with jazz changes will take me awhile to figure out.
I once unwittingly participated in an impromptu CAPE. Not sure if it showed anything except for how talented all the other musicians on here are...

I'd generally rather sing than play bass, but I mention the other only because I've been gigging a lot in that guise, and I know sometimes it's hard to find bass players ;)
Preferred Genres: Not fussed. I'm in a nu-prog band as vocalist, but I'm happy to stretch to other things, and infact I'd love to tackle something a bit less frenetic and a bit more laid back and straightforward.
Pretty comfortable with most styles (thus far) although I can't rap to save myself, and when I say "nu-prog" I'm more of a Neal Morse than a Geoff Tate... I'm on CAPE IV Team Progression and CAPE V Team Hinterland if more reference is required, or you can check the samples at my band's site - www.thethirdending.com
Looking forward to seeing what we can come up with this year :)

You know, one day technology will be so fast, that we will actually be able to play with each other thru the internet with ultra high speed broad band drivers.
Well, the thought is nice, but we will eventually hit the speed limit of electrons, and at 300.000km/s, it will take about 70ms each way to go to the other side of the planet in a straight line.
Wow, all in a sudden the world isn´t that small after all.:)

My tracking rig is normally a HD24 and digital mixer, no Pro Tools, so tempo maps/grids/beat detective are no go, would have to be click track or drum track based. I do have a Cubase SL/UAD card/Melodyne/Drumagog setup also, I used that with wav file in and out for CAPE IV, and it worked fine.
I prefer working in the alt-country, Americana, folk, etc genres, however rock is fine also as long as pedal steel is appropriate, ie Tom Petty-like is A-OK, Mudvayne-like is no go. I played steel and mando on CAPE IV.

Hey all...
5 days until the big "teams reveal" :Coolio:
The team are shaping up nicely...it's a huge puzzle mixing & matching the song, producers, musicians, etc...
We're getting there, but it's an intricate equilibrium.
In fact, as of now all new signups (except for the SHREDBED) must get in touch with me or dwoz first.
Not meaning to exclude new signups, simply trying to do an honest job and not stick people on a team for the sake of it.
So far, so good. :Coolio:

Damn, almost missed the thread because I thought mixers went first and musos were second!
I'm in Bellows Falls, VT.
Guitar and sundry: plays well with others.
Winner of most takes donated to cutting room floor!
Guitar, cowbell, harmonics-guitar, lead solos: Team Campfire
Rhythm guitar chunk, synth lead outro: Team Conception
Various other CaPEly duties
I would say, listen to the things I've mentioned and assign me wherever I would seem to do the most good! The worst that'll happen is I'll contribute, like, one note out of 1000 takes. But it will be a GREAT NOTE. trust me on this :D
Yikes, I posted this before reading Goes' note just before mine... PMed.

I'll play on somethin or other if anybody needs it.
Bass, gat, Hammie, keys, I can screw up just about anything.
Also, if the need arises for a drum tracking room, I got time for that too.
LA, got a huge ftp.
Oh, the thingie:

Singer (see samples below). BTW, I don't have to belt everything, these are just samples I have handy
I hurt my hand, so no gat or keyboards this time.
Style: More practice with Rock than other genres, but I'm not particular.
Sample 1 (http://www.theconveyors.com/audio/THE_CONVEYORS-BluMachSmp3.mp3)
Sample 2 (http://www.theconveyors.com/audio/THE_CONVEYORS-AccSmp3.mp3)
Also a skilled mixer if there's a shortage of gifted/ maestro mixers... doesn't seem likely though.

Just signed up here the other day but I've been a lurker here and at Recpit since week 2 of Mixerman's diaries - way back in 2002. I have every song from the first five CaPE's on the iPod and listen to them often.
