Huh? Show where it is written that says a song MUST have a chorus.

I suppose a song doesnt need a chorus.............................Shit you can do whatever you want.................................In my mind a good song both draws you in and keeps you there......................................My comments were ment to suggest that although this production did everything it takes to draw me in,I didnt find anything in the song to keep me there. In other words:once the flavor wore off the ear candy it was just........uuuh....gum.....sorry............sound s real pro.

Fair comment.
Your original post read like the lack of a chorus was THE reason the song failed for you. But I spose that's a personal taste thing, and obviously you're entitled to that opinion. :Coolio:
For me there's more than enough to keep me interested with the 3 different vocals and the guitar work.

Thanks volt...guys...for listening and for the comments.
The 'no chorus' arrangement is definitely intentional. I wrote a very cool chorus actually, by 'normal' formula standards, but elected not to use one at all. This is a different animal, arrangement-wise. It was written more as a mini-opera.
So jimmy v, you listened 8 times?.......well....thanks...

Yep,I'm listenin again now,and I want to stress this,I'm impressed. With everything, exept what I call shelf life.I spent many years spinnin hit records in clubs and even a bit on radio, and found songs need to be strong enough to survive REPEATED plays. In other words I should be drawn in a little further with each listen. As an artist I can totally connect with the idea that the song is.....yours..therefore all it needs do do is stir YOUR soul EVERYTIME you hear it.==============I listened 3 more times while I wrote this, now after about 4 min of silence,I dont hear it "in my head" Still,I'm impressed......................................... Maybe what I should have said in the begining was:=====very cool!========= This could be a hit if only it had a catchy chorus =============cause thats what I meant.

So, I've got an observation.
Actually, two observations. First, the "down on the bottom" part is a chorus, thankyouverymuch.
Second, I believe that the room sound on the kit is what you could call, in this context, a "mix pun".

There is one for the station, even without a chorus...
Like Volt, I'm quitting too, guitars and amps on ebay 2morrow.
Great tune, lots of "how the f*ck did they do that?" & "What the f*ck was that?", etc...
Like anything good tune you discover new things everytime you listen to it...

Seriously though like my man Watershed mentioned, A B A B C B ...... is NOT the only way to get it done. Puccini has got some shit that has been working for 100 years that's pure Da Capo. Lot's of shit from the 50's and 60's starts with what we'd probably call the chorus so what's the verse and what's the chorus there. If the song doesn't hook you, it doesn't hook you. That's Cool, sure kicked my ass.

If something does work for me I will probibly listen a lot more than 8 times. How many times have you listened to say, your favorite Zeplin record .One of the reasons AJA is so popular as a referance is because not only is the audio great but the SONGS have "shelf life" I wonder if everyone would be so gungho about this tune if it was just another song on the radio from just another band that no one knew.Would it make it on the air? Would it stay there? The writer intentionally scrapped the Chorus, his song ,his choice.I've never heard it,but I miss it none the less.Give this a bit of thought, instead of just jumping to the defence of a buddy.Longterm commercial sucsess depends on REPEATED exposure. It takes an awful lot of play to overexpose a truly great song.I think this peice has the potential to be a great song.Does'nt anyone here understand that the people who make the decisions as to what songs make the LIST tend to listen to each peice REPEATEDLY.Music directors have a limited amount of space to fill.If they ADD something, they want it to stay on the list as long as possible.THEY want it to have a shelf life.=================If I'm gonna take the time to comment on someone else's work it seems only fair that I pay attention to it. Or maybe this forum should be called BLOW SMOKE UP MY ASS,PLEASE.

What the fuck? Thats what I think......................................I also think that once an artist sells copys of his/her work to all his/her friends then the true test begins.........Will anyone else buy it? If your art is a personal expression intended to please only you, thats fine, but if that was the case then why would you ask for opinions? The rest of you give the impression that Mudcat has been somehow damaged by my opinion.I'm flattered that you give me such power,.. But I dont think it hurt so much. Did it?

i love the mix, mr. otek.
cool vibe, great playing and just enough variation as it goes on to keep you in there. you can close your eyes and enjoy the ride, but it didn't have that "chills" factor.
the only thing i would even dare suggest would be a double of the female vox by the male lead at 3:50ish into harmony parts above at the "all for one, one for all" bit into full on freaking out huge choir-like vocals at "join us at the party," etc. then have little vocal oohs and ahhs under the following solo, followed by great big vox call and answer "in my head" stuff at the end.
in other words, huge big vocal payoff to take it up a final notch, then drop the listener on his ass.
nice work.

Jimmy first off, I like you. I really do dig the tune you put up. I think you're talented and I'm pretty sure you are a righteous dude.
But, what are you getting so hot about?
In the end of my post, which you did not quote I said
If the song doesn't hook you, it doesn't hook you. That's Cool,
Did you think I was being sarcastic? Let me assure you I wasn't. I WAS teasing you about the multiple listens and if I offended you I am truly sorry. I actually think it's cool you would give something that doesn't quite work for you that much of a chance.
Assuming that my unabashed support of their effort is all some kind of "in the club" ball licking is also not, on it's face, an unreasonable assumption. A group of folks who hang out together for several years are likley to have some shit in common, similar musical tastes perhaps. Still that assumption is just that, an assumption. The point is I WOULD pay for this shit, and in my mind that IS the bottom line, I had thought you felt the same way.
Perhaps you have way more musical background and education than I do and perhaps you have a way deeper understanding of what truly constitutes a meaningful artistic contribution to the world. Fine, I'll concede that prior to examination because either way it's completely unimportant to me. My purpose here, even more than the entertainment is to grow musically, and to forge connections. I rarely criticize other people's work, because I feel I rarely have anything truly useful to say. Simply saying something doesn't work for you is NOT criticism it's a statement of opinion. Moreover, "shelf life" is an assessment which can only rationally be made post hoc. If you're trying to comment on the "shelf life" of a new song you're making a prediction and that's not really a criticism either. If you're saying that I am uncritical because I do not agree with your OPINION well.....
That's your right dude. As far as I can see, nobody has dumped on you for yours, most of us ( at least in this thread) just don't seem to agree with it. If you think that makes us wankers again fair enough, but I don't hear anyone telling you to drink the Kool-aid, or even that you should piss off. So... what's the problem?
Now if you'll excuse me I'm heading back up to E Shaun's with all the other ball licking retards, I like it up there. It makes me feel at home

Yikes,I've been misunderstood again. My inability to communicate effectively has been an issue in the past.Perhaps unintended emotions were conveyed.Must be, cause I dont recall feeling "hot" I believed that I was involved in an interchange in which I was explaining my comments. To put it into perspective(I hope),I havent listened to everything here.I havent commented on everything I've listened to.I have only listened to a few tunes more than once.I will only comment on something if I believe I have something to add. Before I comment on someone elses work I will carefully consider my words..................... I'm flattered that you think I have any talent, particularly here in amongst some real talent............I dont mean to come off like I know anything special,I thought I was just explaining myself with a bit of tounge in cheek.I'm certainly not trying to make enemys here( allthough Dad always said I could start a fight in an empty room.)As to the ball licking club;I've got one of my own(very limited membership) I wasnt actually refering to anyone specificly,it was just a general observation. Its easy to sell your shit to people who are predisposed to like it.I'm way more likely to buy my sisters kids cd that most any other new act.

rob....sorry for the late reply here. I think we're gonna let the vocals stand as they are...Excellent ideas though. I didn't post this through it's developmental stages, mainly because I was concentrating on the mix, and I had a strong overall vision on it. I had sent both Goes and Anna a vocal ref track(of my horrible voice) to go by, including the Ooh's and other BGV parts...and they each nailed their parts. Kudos again to Goes, Anna, Hal and Otek on this.
