It's a good read...

It kinda made me think...

My dad is 73 and I can count the number of CD's he's bought with just my fingers since 1983-4ish...

Yet his vinyl collection for the previous 20 is quite substantial.

He knows how to use a computer but doesn't download anything because it's worse than the CD...

I rarely buy cd's or download, but I've moved into getting DVD's of Live performances...

My 8 and 11 year old carry a portable DVD player, and it more often than not, has a Simon and Garfunkle DVD, live reunion show or something.

My parents are kinda old for live performances or concerts and my kids are a bit young still...

Didn't radio show used to do surveys to find out demographical information?

Most radio shows I hear have talk too much and are vulger insulting hypemeisters spinning more negative politics...

Radio just seemed to be better than it is now...

Is quality more subliminal when everyone is so busy with all this life in the fast lane stuff?

Today's radio is controlled by Madison Avenue.

It is used to sort audiences into small demographic groups to facilitate micro marketing by large corporations. They don't care if it's entertaining or even if anybody buys the sponsor's product. It's all about middle management covering their asses with statistics for stock analysts who know nothing about the product or about entertainment.

Lee Abrams is actually the guy who started programming music stations that way and he came out of retirement to program XM in an effort to try and fix the train wreck that he realized he had created.

Yes. I was just about to say that reading his blog, and knowing what he's doing with XM, I almost think highly enough of the man that I can get closer to forgiving him for what he did to FM radio in the US in the eighties.

Almost.

The scars and memories of the pain still linger.

He made lots of money in the past so he definitely isn't doing this as any kind of a career move.

Most of the folks I know in radio actually like Lee a lot. Unfortunately the Wall Street crowd never let him spend the money to build the air staff he originally wanted for XM until Sirius had cherry-picked the talent because they were so far behind XM.
