View Full Version : Logic 8, Leopard & One of These...

Now that Leopard has been released from its cage, I wanted to know if anyone here has had the opportunity to try Logic 8 with either a MOTU PCI-424 based system or with an M-Audio ProjectMix I/O. If so, does it work? My copy of Leopard is on its way, but I am keeping it on the shelf until I know that I can use it with my audio/control surface devices. If anyone has any light to shed on this, I would be greatly appreciative.

jord No way, Dude. We made you the mod because we thought you would load up Leopard and try it out with Logic 8.
This is fucked.

motu says their drivers are not leopard ready, so i don't have to even try.
that said, i've literally just installed leopard on my powerbook to test it out. leopard won't go on to the studio computers till i'm sure things are working. however, i'll be able to test logic with leopard tomorrow on the powerbook just to see.

MM is right, it's up to the mod to test and confirm that!!!
The shrink wrap is staying on my copy for quite a while yet...

I just got 95% assurance that I'll be gainfully contracted for another couple of years, so I think I'm going to splurge on Logic tomorrow. (I had actually placed an order with my Macbook, but cancelled the software part to give myself a bit more cooldown time).
Anyway - my Leopard update should arrive at about the same time, and seeing as this is still just a "play" system for the moment, I'll be planning to guinea-pig the Leopard/Logic combo in some form as well.

Oh Sure!!! I already rode the bleeding edge with Logic 8 and wound up getting cut by it with BFD. If anything, I'm just grateful that I still use a G5 so I can run ReWire with it.
Not to mention that Logic has problems with multi-output instruments, either by limitation or by flaw... who knows. I've already sent them a few love-letters on this one.
Considering that my copy of Leopard is in the mail, I thought I would extend my antennae to see if anyone went ahead and tried it anyhow.

There are others that have tried out there... some devices are working flawless. Others aren't.

I plan to try ProTools 7.1 out on Leopard PPC soon - I can also try Logic Express 7.2 if anyone is interested?

May I be the first to advise you against even trying that.
I'm nearly 100% positively sure it won't work. There's an announcement on the DUC about it as well I believe.
That said ...
I've been running Logic 8 on Leopard for nearly 2 days now on a Macbook Pro. So far so good but don't take my word for it. I only use it to open up midi files someone sent me and have no additional hardware attached to it whatsoever.
But as far as the OS goes it seems fine.

My Leopard update arrived yesterday, and I picked up a copy of Logic at lunchtime (just express for now, although I'll probably upgrade knowing me).
All seems to work great so far, although I've only poked around, and I'm not using any external hardware yet.
This is on a Macbook btw.

Logic 8 crashed on load everytime with Leopard for me AT FIRST. After a bit of poking aound online I discovered that there are some ReWire files that I needed to remove and now all is good.
I don't know if Pro Tools put them there or what, but it's fine for now. (Home machine. Not touching the studio until Uncle Digi OK's it!)

Absolutely will not work? Or they don't support it?
Because I know Digi never qualified 10.3.9 but I was running PT on that perfectly.

When they "support" something it means you can count on everything to work. When they don't, it means either they haven't had enough time to test everything or that something very definitely will not work until either they, Apple or Micro$oft fix it. When they post something rather than just leave it off a list, it generally means the latter is the case.

they say the biggest improvements in leopard are under the hood type things that developers will use and implement. that said, leopard still feels a little "incomplete" to me. maybe it's just the necessary growing pains of a new os. it will be good in an update or two where some minor quibbles have been addressed (flash fixed wrt uploading photos, airport drive support for time machine, change that horrible menu transparency, etc.)
so i have my list of complaints for this release, but there appears to be a lot of to love too.
when all the software updates are properly in place it will be swell. that could be soon. as much as i'm having fun with this on my powerbook, my studio DAW isn't changing to leopard yet.
i'm hoping the way the os handles multiple cores will improve the efficiency of audio software on my DAW. there are things like that which could specifically be great for us doing audio.

leopard on my iBook doesnt have a transparent menubar, wtf?
pounce
November 3rd, 2007, 01:04 AM
maybe i should say translucent. the menus now let a lot of the background come through them making them more difficult to read than they were in tiger. it seems to be a common complaint in mac forums.

I think "transparency" means the menus, not the menu bar. There's usually nothing behind the menu bar anyway.

Nonono, that's the thing, the Leopard menubar is supposed to be partially seethru - should be able to see the wallpaper through it. But on mine, you can't - I wonder if it's because my video card can't handle it or something so that feature is turned off?
Oberlehrer

Yes, the menu bar is also supposed to be transparent; but I think it's more the actual menus posing the problem. While previously the menus also had a mild "see-through" effect it seems to have gotten much more prominent with Leopard.
(Disclaimer: No Leopard in sight here.)
iBook, huh? I guess that means some stuff doesn't work. All the fancy graphics effects are probably handled by Quartz Extreme or maybe Quartz Composer. Which AFAIK should work on a G4 iBook, though. Is the monitor set to "millions colors"?

ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 in this one... 1.33ghz G4, with 768mb sdram.
the transparent MENUS arent so bad.

I look at complaints in the mac forums taking them with a grain of salt. No one ever really posts how much they like certain things, and quite often, those complaining about things are often habitual trolls who's job description seems to be to buy software and complain about it.
If anything, the Apple Discussion lists have degraded in nothing more than a troll's whine and cheese party, with the floor all littered with troll dung. Heck, I remember a time when those user-to-user support forums were for... user-to-user support.

Do you have shapeshifter or any GUI mod like that installed?
Apparently upgrading APE can help if that's your prob..

Perhaps, it won't go into translucency if it feels your video chip can't support it. Does your OS qualify your video chip as being able to use Quartz Extreme on your unit? You can find this out in your System Profiler app.

Seems odd that the menus would be but the menubar not. Will check it later, currently on the tiger-installed MBP.

Now, go and get a hobby instead of worrying about the stupid menu bar...

The translucency of the menus in your screenshot doesn't look like the Leopard translucency to me but like the standard translucency as found already in Tiger.
Did you check the color depth for your monitor? Is it set to "millions"?

Here's what Leopard on a new iMac looks like regarding the menu transparency:

And the menu bar:

My desktop image is definitely visible in the Menu Bar.

hope i haven't derailed the thread. i just don't prefer to have that much of the background come through, i have enough trouble reading little fonts as it is.
i've already read rumors about the .1 update which will start addressing some leopard issues. leopard needs to get some quirks addressed. it will be a hoot once it's a little more mature. i'm glad it's not on my DAW right now to tell the truth.

Your Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard menu bar may appear solid in color, instead of translucent.
The translucent Leopard menu bar appears on most computers that are equipped with a graphics card which is compatible with Core Image.
Some graphics cards, such as an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, may not have the necessary OpenGL capabilities to display a translucent menu bar even though they are compatible with Core Image. Those cards should render most effects, but not the translucent menu bar.
