View Full Version : Talk about your BIG MISTAKES...

So, at my "day job" the company is very much involved in fundraising for the United Way.

Anyway, they were hitting people up to donate stuff to the "auction" to raise money. I am a soft touch, and I somehow was coerced entirely against my will to write a love song, which will be "auctioned off" to the highest bidder.

The proceeds all benefit the United Way, and so its a good deal.

Except, of course, that I now have to write and produce a custom love song for the spouse of the lucky high bidder.

Is anyone interested in signing on to give me a little help with it? I'll write it and produce, and will of course need a full complement of REAL musicians to bail my ass out and fix everything that I've broken.

Plenty of lead time...no stupid tight schedule.

...any takers?

I'm definitely willing to play some guitar, though I'm sure there's many other guitarists here with more talent than I'd ever be able to dream of.

As I've gotten older, I've found myself donaing time , bucks ,and talent to a number of charitable things- probably my version of :

WC Fields on his death bed was found by one of his old compatriots reading the Bible- when asked just what he was doing, after a life more than well lived, he replied:" Looking for loopholes!!!"

count me in for any contribution that you might need. vx, guits, bass, and, yes, even drums...( if you don't get a real drummer)

Indeed, with the number of guitar players available, this might just turn into a slightly more melancholic, metrosexual version of "Team Shredbed".

Thanks everyone! this is amazing.

I'll know in a couple days whether it's a song for a guy (female vox) or a woman (male vox), and I'm going to let the "winner" tell me what favorite genre it should be in.

I'm working on some tentative spouse love song titles, let me know what you think:

"The Taste of Love"

"My Secret Lover Reminds Me of You"

"The Kids Are In Bed, Let's Do the Laundry"

"The Last 10 Years Feels Like Forever"

"You Fill Me Up, I Think"

"Its The Little Thing You Have, er, I Mean, You Do"

any way, fun aside, we'll see how this goes! I'll keep you posted.

Interesting side note:

I have to do a tiny bit of research into making sure that this isn't defined as a "work for hire" and clearly lay out the (lack of ) copyright participation by the auction winner, who will be a sort of "inspired by" contributor...

...just met the woman who gave the high bid on the song...a rather fetching and nice person who will, I think, be very fun to work with and very appreciative of whatever comes out of it.

Since she's a woman (duh!), it will probably be female lead vox, so Anna...you're on deck!

Everyone else, I will ping you back to confirm things when I'm ready to go. Thank you for offering and I WILL be taking you up on those offers.

I have to sit down with her and interview her about who/what/where/when the song is about, then get writing!

I am keeping a list of these song titles...there's some good gold in there!

thanks, everyone, for the support! I'll most likely be keeping this as an open project in this thread, so stay tuned!

I'm a guitar player and you prolly don't need one.

As a former rape crisis center board president i do the auction of services almost every year. The almost comes from the year after my first year which saw me recording a song by a guy that was about a bahamian woman who could piss across a car hood and write her name with her pee on a wall.

It just didn't seem like an appropriate ending to an org that deserved some respect.

As I sit here QCing mixes of a "jazz" group, I do have a title if she and her mate are older; it's definately a spin off of a standard but it's yours if you care to take it:

"What Autumn Leaves"

Plenty of room for insight.

Like Viagra credit card charges and drooping breasts.

Sorry "jazz" does that to me.

Don't worry...this project is going to be something that everyone involved can be extremely proud of. Its going to be cutting and poignant and something that everyone else that bid will be upset that they didn't go that extra 5 bucks!

I'm horsing around here now...but its going to be a full-on serious effort.

So, here's the update.

The song will be a "love song" from a mother to her very young son.

I'm not exactly sure yet, but it's beginning to feel like the "story" in the lyrics will be about the relationship, through the lives of the two, from cradle to....whatever, and the constancy of maternal presence over the miles and years.

I'll be doing a first cut at the lyrics this week. This will not be a lullaby, or a folky thing. The mom mentioned that the boy("Desmond") loves to dance, so we're likely going with a production that has some kind of a groove that you can move to.

More details coming as they're available!

Plenty of lead time...no stupid tight schedule.

You have spoken the magic words.

I have to do a tiny bit of research into making sure that this isn't defined as a "work for hire" and clearly lay out the (lack of ) copyright participation by the auction winner, who will be a sort of "inspired by" contributor...

And the OTHER magic words

Actually, I'm down for it even if I don't make a nickle (which is likely anyway) and get none of the *other* kind of credit, just as long as the lead time is substantial.

Gats, keys/soft synths, vox, mix.

And in your case, I think "soft touch" means "crazy like a fox"
