Hmm...

My mother is leading a university research in some sort of a linguistics thing, where they need to record conversations and listen, edit and translitterate them. Pretty simple stuff, which in the bad old days would've been a cassette thing. She asked me what to buy and I couldn't quite fiugre what to say.

I mean, some sort of a handheld HD-recorder with optional data compression (MP3 and WMA are ok for their purposes, though WAV is preferred) would probably do the trick, as well as some sort of long-playing MD. I have no exprerience of such devices, so I wouldn't know what's reliable and easy to use...

So, anyone's got a hunch what I should recommend her?

(First I thought I'd recommend her to buy Alsihad HD7 and a vintage Neve console and after they don't need them I could take them. Don't think that'll work, though) :P

HERE (http://www.transcriptiongear.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=DIGITAL-TOP) might be a good start.

Jerry Pournelle, the sci-fi author and raconteur, has been batting the idea around recently with some of his trusted advisors here (http://www.chaosmanorreviews.com/open_archives/jep_column-316-b.php). Look for the section "On Digital Voice Recorders".

I have and carry an older Olympus DVR for when the muse blesses me. Sad thing is, she hasn't blessed me much lately. But still.

I'm using one of those for almost everything outside my room,
small, easy to use and reliable:

Plug the Compactflash card into your DAW and edit the stuff.
Simple as it could be.
