View Full Version : IEM / Wedges mix question

I have a stage monitor configuration question and since my experience is with playing the guitar and am not wise in the ways of these things I am seeking council.

Here's the situation. We are using a Mackie 1604 VLZ-Pro for our little FOH mix. We are sending an aux1 mix to a headphone distribution box and are connecting that to some individual Rolls monitor/mic mixers on stage (mics also plug into these boxes before being sent to the snake to get the more-me mix happy for each musician's individual IEMs). Since we use IEMs, we only use wedges for backup or any for any opening acts.

We are currently sending aux2 to the wedges. Both aux1 and aux2 are being sent pre-fade. aux3 is used for efx and aux 4 is available.

This IEM setup works great. But we would like a second distinct vocal mix for IEMs, so we are thinking (always dangerous) the logical thing would be to put the second IEM mix on aux2, pre-fade.

Questions?

How would aux4 work for the wedges since it can only be used post-fader (evidently, aux 1 & 2 are switchable for pre/post fade, aux 3 & 4 can only be post-fade)?

Would it be a better idea to put IEM mix2 on aux4 instead (and if so, why)?

We're really most interested in getting a great IEM1 and IEM2 monitor mix, but don't want to shortchange the wedges for our openers if we don't need to.

Thanks!

[Throwing the Mackie into a dumpster is not presently an option.]

I'd just keep doing what you are doing and hang a separate, cheap mixer off the insert points for the vocal mix.

Thanks Bob!

I'm assuming the post-fade channels would not be good for this purpose.
