I read about the women overboard yesterday. She was a person with no name or face at the time of the story...just a women in distress like so many other folks on this earth.
Now we find out she is Bob's daughter. She has a name and a face. She is Laura Gainey.
The guy would trade his entire career, give up his own life I am sure to be able to turn the clock back 48 hours and warn his daughter.
This reinforces the idea that we need to tell our parents, our children, our loved ones and our friends how much we cherish them in every way. Nobody can guarantee you or yours a next breath.
If you are a praying type then please keep Laura Gainey and her family in mind.
Very sadly,
Aardvark

I'm glad to start of the replies - very glad...
She's in my thoughts & prayers...my mom's too. It's a long story - but anyone would definitely want my mom on their side.

truly very sad news
- I've lost 2 friends to the sea.
one on a transatlantic - he left Gibraltar as crew on a 102' charter power boat 2 weeks before I sailed at the tail end of tradewinds. we used to hang out at the Red Barrel tavern where he would regale us with sordid tales of the various rock stars (think bowie, jagger) who chartered the ship he crewed on. he left teasing me we were gonna hit the doldrums for sure cause we we crossing so late in the season. turns out we had perfect weather, following seas with the wind behind and made Antigua in 17 days (good time for a 52' steel hull sailboat) arrived and while testing our land legs by finding the nearest bar, ran into one of his crewmates
and heard the sad news - he had gone overboard on a late watch - likely taking a piss overside - no one heard a sound - 14' waves and pitch black he never had a chance and probably knew it from the go. they stayed and searched w/coast guard at coordinates 3 days before they had to leave.
simultaneously crying and drinking, we drank ourselves comatose and I vowed to use the dreaded sailing harnesses from then on whenever going foredeck to change sails in anything but fair weather.
my second friend was my captain aboard a 42' Sea Ray custom fitted w/larger fuel tanks for longer passages to Jamaica and Haiti for marlin tournaments. I had crewed for 2 previous trips and when he radioed me to come down for another trip, I was sailing in Maine and had already commited for a delivery down to St Thomas and couldn't go. fate.
the boat, him and his crew of 2 went missing off the coast of Haiti - whether the over large fuel tanks proved too much for the hull in bad weather or pirates got them (and there were aplenty in haitian waters) - they and the boat were never to be seen or heard from. I had known him since I was born and don't think I'll ever not miss him.
very sad and I pray for her and her family .

It's a terrible thing. I'm not the praying type but I'll keep Laura in my thoughts and send out as much positive energy as possible. Sending good thought to Bob and his family as well. Take care Logan

It's a sad loss.
And I too have a huge respect/love/hate relationship with the sea. I'm cautious beyond all bounds, but she has a way of making her point no matter what.
The piss break is a number one killer, especially at night.
I've been almost pulled over board by giant sharks, billfish and have fallen from the tuna tower into the cockpit (rogue wave)and suffered a concussion with which i had to live with on board for three days.
Rogue waves are the real sea monsters.
My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones to the sea.
Now I must go ask Santa for a instant inflate vest.

It doesn't look good, but people have survived this sort of thing in the past.
Hoping for the best.

I've had my head down buried in work the last few days, and actually just saw the news. What a tragedy. My condolences to the Gaineys and all Hab fans everywhere.

I feel horrible for the father-- and today (13 Dec) is his birthday.
They've called off the search. I cannot imagine what must be going through his mind now.
Prayers of strength for him and his loved ones.
