MiX iT! 2 - Download + Mix It
Sponsored by Kagi Media (http://kagimedia.com) and Auraleo Advanced Learning (http://auraleo.com)
Sign ups are now closed + we'd like to thank all of you who signed up for MiX iT! 2. We have 95 mixers this time! In this thread you'll find the links to download the files + the rules for the Mixing phase.
Timeframe
You have 1 week starting now until Wednesday, December 26, 2007 to download the files.
You have 2 weeks starting now until Wednesday, January 2, 2008 to complete your mix.
We do not want you to upload your mix during these 2 weeks. There will be a dedicated thread for this starting on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at which point you will have 48 hours to upload your MIX, until Friday, January 4, 2008.
The Song
The song you are about to MIX and which has won the submissions poll is:
Seņor - by Myles Vincent
xxx
Myles Vincent on MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/mylesvincent)
Thank you very much Myles Vincent for providing the multitrack masters of your song + allowing us to mix it. You guyz rock!!
MiX iT RULES
Imagine the following scenario : You get a phone call from one of the band members from Myles Vincent. They want you to mix a track called 'Seņor'. All tracking and editing has been done and now they want YOU to do a great MIX for them. And that is exactly what we want you to do ... MiX iT!
You may mix the song using any tools you like (software or hardware).
You may use sample replacement for the drums.
Time or Pitch correction tools are NOT allowed. This event is about mixing, and that is what we want to focus on. While pitch or time correction tools may or may not find their way into your daily work flow, it is our strong opinion that these are not mixing tools. We think there is more to learn by working with the source files as they come. This event is first and foremost a learning experience.
The only 'editing' exception we would like to allow is this : You can make creative arrangement decisions as long as you use the original audio files.
You will provide us with a stereo mix (m4a, m4p, or AAC @ 160 Kbps) and a zipped version of your project/session file (if mixed with DAW), or jpgs of hardware settings (if mixed on console + OBG).
Download Info
In order to proceed you will have to download the audio files using the link below.
Download size: zipped approx 131 MB
After unzipping you will find 20 files in FLAC format (see below for more info on FLAC).
After decoding the files from FLAC to WAV (or AIFF) you will have 20 rendered contiguous multi-track mono audio files @ 44.1k / 16 bit. Total size: approx 693 MB
The files will be available for download for only 1 week until Wednesday, December 26, 2007.
You may download the file ONLY if you signed up (http://womb.mixerman.net/showthread.php?t=5785) for MiX iT! 2.

FLAC
FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio. FLAC stands out as the fastest and most widely supported lossless audio codec. Visit their website (http://flac.sourceforge.net) for more info.
We recommend these apps to decode FLAC files:
Windows: FLAC for Windows 1.21b (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Codecs/FLAC-for-Windows.shtml)(Note for Vista users: if the installer is getting stuck, try this workaround (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=52353))
Mac: xACT 1.62 (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21952)

Okay... "some" dropouts? I can only hear one on one of the tracks.... can you hear more? If you're hearing more than me then I'm not sure, maybe it's a decoding issue.
Anyone else hearing any dropouts on any other tracks? Better speak up now so we can get this thing sorted.

I have read about issues with FLAC and 24-bit files, but I believe these were fixed in 1.2 or 1.2.1.
If you are playing them with a player that uses an earlier version of the FLAC library this could cause problems with playback.

Dubnick have you extracted the flac file to wav yet? I'm hearing the dropout in the flac, but I don't hear it after it's extracted. I'm hearing it post extraction to Wav. Maybe I'll re-extract just the overheads again - I was putzing around with the tracks in a hurry last night before I had to go somewhere and a lot of that time I just had the first few bars/w drums looping, so it's very possible that it only happens that once - in the first few bars of the drums, correct? It is pretty noticable and I would just fly in another section where something similar is played, but it's not allowed I guess, huh. Just out of curiousity, do you know how those overheads were mic'd? Also, I don't have it in front of me but there's a bass track that ends with "con" in the name - most of the track names are pretty self explanitory but that one wasn't - does it stand for condensor mic? Thanks.

I've been using dbpoweramp to encode/decode for years. As a test I decoded one of the bass tracks with the FLAC one that Charles posted and decoded the same track with dbpoweramp then played them at the same time with one phase fliped and I had silence for the entire song, so atleast decoded from FLAC to wav was the same. I might play with so encoding/decoding and see if I'm losing any info. dbpoweramp is cool because you can grab codecs for just about anything and it's pretty light weight. You can covert files from the explorer menu with a right click too.

Try Max (http://sbooth.org/Max/) instead, see if that does the trick.
If that doesn't work, then the official FLAC package for Mac damn well should; http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

That file blew up for me (aborted decode) under 1.1.2 (ships with slackware) at about the 49% point.
Metadata indicated it was encoded with 1.2.1, so I upgraded and it finished, finally.

35481 seniorkick.wav
35481 seniorov2.wav

Go here (http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html) and you should find what you're looking for.
I'd advise nabbing one of the versions towards the top of the page (not under the extras section) as they'll be up-to-date with the flac version used to compress the files.
And, as always, remember to RTFM
also, you could grab a file writer (http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/dev/filewrite/filewrite121b.exe) plugin for winamp, and use that to 'play back' directly to a file.

The FLAC decoding? or The OH file?
Neither, really.
The issue seems to be with the fact that the files were compressed using the latest rev (1.2.1) of FLAC and some earlier revs choke on the OH1 file.
Perhaps Knightsy's offer of posting the raw wav file will solve that problem for those people that for whatever reason cannot get to the latest revision?

Okay, I'm totally confused.
How do I convert the FLAC into WAV? I installed Winamp, so I can listen to the FLACking things directly, but how do I decode to wav?
It's kinda my fault. I sorta assumed every1 was already familiar with FLAC + didn't really explain it very well.
FLAC is data compression software specifically designed for audio. It's lossless, meaning that the file comes back identical to the original source file. No loss in quality. (Unlike mp3 or AAC.) And it gets used a lot for transmitting files over the net in online collaboration like CAPE.
In the 1st post of this thread there are two links to FLAC encoding/decoding applications. There are many applications out there that can do this, but I only wanted to recommend ones that I or one of the mods here have 1st hand experience with, and have confidence in their reliability. The two we recommended should decode the files perfectly.
If any of you are having problems with the app you are using to decode the FLAC files, then please download one of these two apps:
Windows: FLAC for Windows 1.21b (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Codecs/FLAC-for-Windows.shtml)(Note for Vista users: if the installer is getting stuck, try this workaround (http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=52353))
Mac: xACT 1.62 (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21952)
This should solve your problems.

I just listened to both overheads + didn't hear a dropout. I'm not sayin it ain't there, but I can't seem to find it. And the files I'm listening to are from the same zip that everyone downloaded, and then converted from FLAC to WAV with xACT.
To track this down, let's get super-specific...
1. What's the name of the file or files you are hearing the problem in?
2. Exactly where in the timeline is the problem?
3. Please describe exactly what the problem is.
I'd like to get this sorted ASAP, so we can focus on mixing.
Thanx!

Ok, all looks good here. Decoded with xACT, bunged all the files into Ardour and the drum tracks are different lengths but it all lines up fine. :)
Whatever you decode the files with, make sure it's at least FLAC 1.2.0 or higher. xACT 1.62 meets this requirement.
Can I suggest using Wavpack instead of FLAC in the future for distributing the multitracks? It has a much more stable 24-bit implementation and xACT will encode/decode these as well.
Charles Dye

Every tool I've got here is telling me they're 24 bit. Versions of FLAC prior to 1.2.0 have known issues with 24 bit files.
If you're on a Mac use the version of xACT Charles linked to. If you're on Windows, make sure you grab the latest version of the Windows FLAC tools from the other link. Make sure you're using version 1.2.0 or above.

I used the latest version of xAct as listed with the files and got the dropout - I've been busy with another mix so I haven't had a chance to re-decode the files to see if that fixes anything. I'll get the specific info as far as which overhead file and at what point the dropout is, but I can tell you that using the latest version of that software doesn't ensure the dropouts don't happen.

Okay... I'm feeling like my communication skillz are sadly sucking.
FLAC is a data compression format.
To use the files on your DAW you need to first decode them (using the software mentioned above) into a format that your DAW can use.
I know FLAC is new for some of you, but my hope was it would make downloading the files easier, because they would be so much smaller.
If I'm not explaining this very well could someone else give it a crack?

I for one appreciate how much effect FLAC can have on file size. I actually had to write a similar encoder/decoder in college. Lossless audio compression. To this day...I remember that I passed and ended up with about 52% compression on a speech sample, but have NO clue how I wrote it.
As soon as FLAC becomes a little more common, I'm gonna re-rip all my old CDs into FLAC files. Much better than listening to mp3s.

That would be great

Had an issue with OH1 at first also but upgrading to a newer version of Xact fixed the issue for me. Good to go now!

They are 24bit 44.1kHz for me too, I hear no drop out from 1:50 - 2:30 in either OV1 or OV2. I decoded with Windows FLAC from Charles link
I used the same Windows FLAC and ov1 repeatedly failed to convert :Roll eyes:
If someone who has successfully converted ov1 to .wav could upload it to sendspace.com or equivalent and PM me the URL I'd appreciate it.

Maybe I missed it but was there any discussion as to what direction the band wanted for the song? Any references in terms of other bands? Thanks :)

I asked the band for mix notes, but received no reply. So, that's why there's none. Sorry.

Hmmm... looking for a workaround. My platform (Sonar 6PE) doesn't support flac.
I'm all loaded & mixing with S6PE. Decoded bundle to .wav with flac frontend 1.71/flac 1.21b
(http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=flac&filename=flac-1.2.1b.exe&use_mirror=superb-east)

So I downloaded and installed the flac decoder from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Codecs/FLAC-for-Windows.shtml
But when I point it at the flac files and hit the "decode" button, I get "Run-time error '75': Path/File access error." Tried reinstalling, got same error. Tried re-unzipping the flac files, got same error. There's a guy mentions the same problem here:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=52353
which is the same thread as mentioned for Vista installer problems. But nobody has responded to him there.
Got any other decoders, anyone?

If FLAC won't work, please use the WavPack version.
The link to the WavPack files is in 1st post of this thread, beneath the FLAC version.
Sorry about all the FLAC problems, every1. I apologize for not being aware of the of the problems in advance.

All good here with the files.
In terms of mix notes, I would say that it's quite obvious that the
guys are trying to sound like The Killers/Interpol/The National etc Hope this helps for a reference.
All the best.

Well picked! And I would add Editors to that list.
But IMO it would be better to for everyone to mix according to their instincts, that would be more likely to yield a fresh approach.

Dumb question: My mix is ready to post. What thread should I post it at?
Charles Dye

From the 1st post of this thread:
We do not want you to upload your mix during these 2 weeks. There will be a dedicated thread for this starting on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at which point you will have 48 hours to upload your MIX, until Friday, January 4, 2008.

Shouldn't it be spelled 'Seņor'? as in spanish? or am I losing my mind AGAIN?

No Chris, you're dead right. How do you make that particular character?
Charles Dye
December 23rd, 2007, 05:57 AM
"ņ" is done on my keyboard by pressing opt-n to get the tilde "˜" + then just "n" again to get the combo "ņ".
I originally referenced their myspace page for my spelling of it.
Fixed now.

Hi Guys en Dolls,
I must be stupid or something else,t i read this thread for 2 hours and now i`m trying to resolve my problem with downloading de wave-pack for the OV1 file, hoping that wil solve the problem.
Now i seem to have the problem that i cant use this file with the others.
Then trying to do all of them into my project, and getting the message: does not support that file type- shitty message.
I`m going te throw everything out of the window Evil!
@Charles: Maybe there is a possible solution for such re-occuring problems as these, by putting the problem and solutions to the problems on a special place on the posts? So everyone can find the solved problems quickly without losing much time reading and looking for it on four pages  (i also could be just stupid and have missed it! )
Also: does anyone have that OV1 kenobe wav file for me???Please:Cry:
grtz Peter

musicdog: You still need to decode the Wavpack file to wav. It's called wavpack but it bares no relation to wav at all.
Use either xACT for Mac or dbPowerAmp for Windows.

Use either xACT for Mac or dbPowerAmp for Windows.
Actually, dBpoweramp is a bit fiddly for my liking. Foobar2000 might be a better choice for Windows wavpack conversion. Bung the files in it, select them all, right click and select 'Convert...'.

MiX iT RULES
...
You will provide us with a stereo mix (m4a, m4p, or AAC @ 160 Kbps) and a zipped version of your project/session file (if mixed with DAW), or jpgs of hardware settings (if mixed on console + OBG).
...
Because I just know this will be a big issue: How do we encode to m4a, m4p, or AAC?

Right click (or CTRL+click) on your PT session file, and choose 'create archive'
(or if you're running 10.5 Leopard they changed it to 'compress' )
