Cut it and don't look back. I cut mine 6 years ago (was about the same length) and haven't regretted it one bit.

Go to a place that will donate your hair to make wigs for kids going through chemotherapy.

Fucking perfect suggestion.
Well done...even for a 'Wings fan....hehehehe.
Cut it all off and see how the boss likes that look.

Cut it off to just where they want it to be (ie: Collar Length)
Keep it all the one length (No Layers)
You still should be able to put it into a short ponytail.
SBG
PS: locks of love is a great organisation. Put it in a ponytail with the band just below where you want it cut off. Have the hairdresser cut it off just above the band, that way hair will already be bundled together. Locks of love won't take hair that has been on the floor, so this way they can just cut it and give you the ponytail.:D

Had long hair for about 10 years...
I liked it because I didn't have to think about it: clip the ends once a year, and otherwise just ignore it.
My recomendation: go with a 'buzz' cut. Just go down to k-mart or whatever and buy a $20 hair cutting tool... I'll be the last haircut money you ever have to spend.
And you can be even lazier that you could with long hair! You won't need to plan ahead for drying time when you wash your hair.
Take a shower at 2:00 am and go straight to bed!
Luxury!
M
And I like the "locks of love" suggestion, as well.

Here's what I do:

Wahl Homepro clippers (http://www.wahl.com/homepro11.html)
If you're gonna cut it off, cut it off with a vengeance! I use a #2 guard, and cut mine very short (of course, being balding means I'm doing about 75% of the work you'll have to do :D ).
Lots of benefits to very short hair, I particularly like how I haven't had to comb or brush my hair since 1999. Dries with a few passes of the towel, too!

And wear small collars!

My drummer cut off a long ponytail on the last day of high school... actually tied it off top AND bottom. Holds together better. He still has it in a shoebox in his room. We're going to steal it and frame it for his 21st.

+1 on the buzz cut. It's much easier to take care of, and has at least as much attitude. Plus you'll cut your shampoo bill drastically.

Went with the buzz as of last summer. I've had long hair literally all my life. I wish I had done it in, oh, '85. It's so funny--I always thought I looked pretty cool and now looking back I think I looked like a sissy.
Probably the corpse paint isn't going to go over well at work, either. :)

I did mine in the short "Tommy Lee" style and have not looked back. Donate your hair. Two hair bands, on at the top, one at the bottom. Chop above the top band. Go to http://www.locksoflove.org/ and find out where to send the hair.
it's what I did

Shave it down man.
Listen to this lady. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZTPrrCOFXE)
Then apply that advice to your scalp.
Bald is the new hairy.

your hair is beautiful - i pay $$$$$ to have those same highlights - yours are natural! Locks of Love doesn't take colored or processed hair either....my loss.
my hair is a tad bit longer than yours -- and i've considered donating it if/when i decide to stop spending a small car payment on conditioner and all my spare time brushing it out...but alas since i joined the "color" gang i lost my opportunity to help the children (and adults) out with something that would help bring back their esteem.
you are in a huge position to make someone's life better - and relieve yourself from headaches, choking on hair, having it wrap around your neck, sitting on it and trying to turn your head in the car, etc.
Go for it!

Only until I whacked it off did I realise that long hair says 'unemployed' , 'bad attitude' and 'druggie'.
I went with the #4 myself, tune it up twice a year now and notice the difference in the way strangers approach me even though I really haven't changed at all. (still with the bad attitude) I even have a friend now who's a motorcycle cop. Go figger.
Of course, there's all the side benefits like low maintenance, shampoo and conditioner that lasts a year, and no calling plumbers to pull hairballs out of the drains anymore.
You're not a bad lookin guy either. Maybe you could find a gay stylist who could make you handsome without skinnin' it all the way down.
Oh, the locks for kids thing is good too. It'll make you feel better about stepping out of the 80's hairstyle.

I have to say that I take umbrage at that remark.
I am NOT unemployed.
There is the job that renews my soul and gives me the will to keep on going through the coming day, and then there is the one that pays the rent.
Perhaps one day they will merge, but until that day I will suffer/accept both for what they are and try to make peace between them.
At the tender age of 37 I almost miss sleeping on the floor of a van.
Does that give too much away?
I love my warm comfy bed.
But not as much as I love to rock.
Oh, Jeebus.
I'm fucked.

I did the long hair thing a while back. Looked like a cross between Danny DeVito and Jesus.
Right before my daughter was born, I went to my sister the hairdresser and told her, "Cut it all off!"
Went from full beard and long hair to a high-and-tight and a goatee. Never been back since.
I get a haircut from my sister every three or four weeks. I no longer own a comb; don't need one.
It's low maintenance, comfortable, and at least my wife says it looks good FWIW.
Try it. You might like it.

Young man, you are going to have to wear a shirt if you want to work in this funeral parlor. We have a certain image to uphold.

That's exactly the image I'm trying to cultivate, so I won't be whacking off mine
Getting kind of thin on top, though. And I'm self employed.

Screw the job, keep the hair :)
To be more serious, I've been wanting to cut my hair short for years. I'm lazy with the hairbrush and braiding it every single day drives me crazy. Unfortunately a certain person some of you know as well, is very strictly against it.

If you're gonna go short, get on with it.

Atticus,
You do as you see fit Bro. But, I gotta weigh in with The Monkey. I had the hair going for awhile. Then about 10 years ago because my Dad was dying and I was the eldest son, I had to spend a lot more time interacting with "The Man" for a whole slew of reasons I won't go into, this was a truly unpleasant experience as there was a chunk of money involved. I had people dragging me into court trying to get conservatorship of my Dad's estate, people whom I had never met who claimed they had been close friends or business associates of my Dad. I was surrounded day and night by true Assholes. I was so angry I could barely see straight. I wanted to scream "Hey all you Fuckers" back the fuck off me or I 'm gonna go postal"
I cut the hair. Not as any kind of statement I just thought it would be more convenient as I was spending what I was beginning to feel was an un-manly amount of time with shampoo/conditioner/comb/blowdryer matrix. High and tight. I could now shower in 5 minutes and look absolutely steely cold on the ball.
It was bizarre, it was as if I had cried to the whole world "Hey all you fuckers take 2 steps back, lower your fucking voices, and drop the fucking tone of condescension" and they actually did it. I still can remember that sensation vividly.
If you do cut, as has been stated, you'll gain a fair amount of physical convenience. But the big ticket for me was being placed in a different social valance by all the judgmental lemmings in a way that seemed to be completely against their will.
In this light It's not capitulation, it is revenge. (provided as Dik points out that you go extreme and not just right above the collar  )
regards,
mous

Hey, man. We're still waiting for the "after" pics.
What gives?
FWIW. #2 clipper works great for me. My girlfriend couldn't understand why I wasted my money on shampoo. When I told her it cost about $.01 for three days she shut up.

Hank, I've found that a bar of soap works great when your hair is that short! Really, looks exactly the same as if I use good shampoo...

Yah I found a gig where I didn't have to cut it for the time being. Once this loan officer thing goes over I'm still going to have to and I'll post some after pics. As it goes now I got some overnight job. I'm sure it'll happen soon enough... but not soon enough for some of my family.

I've found that it is more manageable and has more shine if I use a good shampoo and conditioner. YMMV
I've got some new mics I wanna try on my old POS upright. I'll keep my fingers warmed up.
