can I say Beatles?

I for one was thinking Arthur-era Kinks.

That's a compliment too.

I can't think of a single bad thing to say on first listen. Everything just fits. I'm in a much better place now than I was when the song began.

Oh. Ending was a bit abrupt. But that's a small, small quibble for having gone through the rest of the song and the high trip quotient.

Thanks for your comments guys. I really enjoyed working on this too... just a shame I couldn't bash out another mix before the deadline as my comp is still on the fritz :(

From a mixers point of view how could you/I have made this better? Please give me some tips as I'm always wanting to learn more (especially from you pros).

Cheers,

Ash

My preliminary mix critique is that the strings are under-represented.

My preliminary mix critique is that the strings are under-represented.

dwoz

I asked him to take them down about 1/2db from the first mix. I would rather not always hear all the elements of what I considered a supporting instrument perhaps, than have them dominate and distract. Also, since they were samples, the 1st violin player wasn't in the mixing room shouting "more me".

More strings woulda made it less pop and a bit sappy... IMO.

Nice selection of players for the song, well presented.

This one has a very "special" feel about it; the whole production and the sound are pretty unique. The balance of instruments and voice is very different from a "standard" sound; I really like that.

That's a real piano, right?

And it's played beautifully.

Oh yeah, it's real. hrasco nailed it. What you hear is the initial track against which all others were conceived and recorded.

It's the old upright I learned to play on a half-century ago. Fiz suggested a dark sounding upright and it was sitting right here. It was fun to mic it up and use it instead of samples. I'm glad it's close to concert pitch.

Nice work everyone and Groovr, I really like the sound of your voice. This is one of the best teamwork I've heard this year so far.

Nice song......good musical components. Although I only listened on a laptop, I would be tempted to add a bit more reverb with longer decay time to the VOX.

WHOA. whoa hang on there. Sod the reverb and how loud the strings are.

:icon_eek:

Goes, is the thing you're trying to point out to people that this is a KILLER, PERFECT, POP SONG?

I'm trying to figure out if it's just me, or if this is the biggest hit I've heard yet. It does NOT end abruptly, it's supposed to be that way. The whole thing is just as it's supposed to be...

Guys, this is a hit song. This is AWESOME. I'm calling it even though I'm a schmuck at playing instruments and mixing and all that stuff. Nothing should be changed or fixed, it's perfect.

The last tune I felt that way about was Team Hypnosis last year- and this is just as perfect but instead of being so magical it catches your breath and takes a little of your soul, this one GIVES you breath and gives you a little of ITS soul.

Ohmygod, guys. Don't you dare ever stop making music, any of you.

Guys, this is a hit song. This is AWESOME.

Those were my thoughts when I first heard the demo. I think this song (not just our version of it) has commercial potential, and with Valentine's day around the corner, perhaps some seasonal relevance to give it a boost.

Wow. This is the coolest of the bunch that I've been through so far.

GREAT voice and great crunchy processing on it. Yeah, don't add reverb... it's great.

Mix notes: I'd probably duck the bass down a hair. And I'd try and get it a little wider... put the piano leaning left, and the guitar hard left. I wouldn't mind the snare to be a little less lofi... but I can appreciate where you've got it.

And in the break, the strings actually feel a little loud to me. They probably wouldn't if they were a real quartet... THAT would be smokin'! I actually wouldn't mind the strings down some more throughout.

All these comments nitpicks. It's very cool and has a great vibe.

Nice work.

This excellent song resulted in a negative reaction.

It sounds so good I thought I was listening to the radio and just switched off! Honestly, that's meant as a compliment although it probably doesn't sound like one

I love it.

Hrasco, the piano sound is perfect for the song, and your playing is excellent.

Test, you are the one-man rhythm section. Great choices on the drums. I love the brushes.

Legros, your parts just float on top and beautify the whole thing.

The strings are perfect.

Fizbin, good job on the programming and the guitars. You really produced this well.

Ashley, the mix really works. I especially like where you placed the drums and percussion...

...and Groovr's voice! Groovr, you can do no wrong, my friend. You're always a highlight of CAPE.

This is such a beautiful song. Period. McAllister writes songs that flank my defenses and pierce my heart. Bastard... lol.

Because I too am a big fan of Groovr and Fizbin, and because I got to hear all the demos. I'll say the same thing that I did about Goes' team, It's just not a big surprise when Tiger Woods goes 6 under.

Still, you guys killed this. To the level that I think you ought to shop it. I'm dead serious. I can absolutely hear the whole thing start to finish ( and I mean this mix right here ) playing under the obligatory "Shrek and Fiona pine for each other" montage in Shrek 4.

More than that, people just ought to have a chance to hear it.

This is stunning work!

Thank you guys very much.

This song was, hands down, my favorite of all the tunes on offer this Cape. The only reason that I didn't ask for it as a producer was that I couldn't think of anything I would have done differently than the demo. (There waw an AnnaB songs in that catagory too.)

Thank you fizbin and team for demonstrating that the problem was actually my own lack of vision.

Nothing you've added here has taken away from the achingly beautiful song at the core. Just an awesome job.

Beautiful playing, gorgeous mix, awesome vocal. This is a top-three favorite! Thank you all.

I felt this hit when it was first put up on the writers thread.

Beautiful lyrics simply delivered.

A cool trip.

My first thought when I heard the demo was "it's perfect as it is. How on earth am I going to not fuck this up?"

So my M.O. was basically to stop trying to interpret, or bring anything new to the table, and just present the melody and lyrics as they stood, to the best of my ability.

I still love the demo - it's a regular spin on my system here :)

If I remember correctly, McAllister is a Beatles fan.

I think the mix is just right. The guitar is a special treat.

This is a very sweet song and could been done by the Fab Four IMHO.

Well whoever this McAllister cat is,
may I compliment him that his team rendered his song nicely.
It sounds great.

That should not understate how important this song is.

McAllister: you wrote a nearly perfect song. Minor arrangement changes would have brought it top.

You're there man. You're there.
Do you up the ante?
