I'm in love with Regina Spektor...had to share that with you.
Check out Samson, Field below and the other songs from the album 'Begin to hope'.
Interesting fuzzy synth bass as well...until I heard it on my studio system I thought it was a fck up.

I never appreciated anything more than when someone introduced me to a new piece of music that I grew to love. This stuff breaks my heart and makes me happy at the same time...(kinda like Chopin does) still you've prob all heard her she's quite big now.

Feel free to share your Gems, tips,

This is a shameless plug as I was involved in making the record but it was *great* fun doing it... I love the stuff. There are some samples up. (I think they are the unmastered final mixes)

(Oh, again on drums Mikko Kaakkuriniemi from CaPE teams Europa & Independence :) )

Quite cool...reminds me of a band I saw live Sigur Ros crossed with Mettalica.
I mixed some rehearsals for some um n r dudes for a band with that kinda vibe- called bullet for my vallentine so they could choose the songs for the album a while ago. They sounded so mad when you soloed the vox..rah rah rah:Twisted:
Cool record though..

Glad you liked them...

From members of some of the best know doom/sludge/post-hardcore bands Cave In, Old Man Gloom and Forensics comes Zozobra

http://www.myspace.com/zozobra505

Really interesting mix of Godflesh-like bass and drums, post-hardcore melody (In the vein of Quicksand and Cave In), very sludgy production with lots of Black Sabbath-y goodness and a sense of almost witnessing a neo-grunge band.

I am really digging the solo record by Roger Joseph Manning Jr. The production is a little... thin?... un-ballsy.... not quite, but something like that.

But the songs, performances, and arranging are killer.

Lebouche, are you going to complain out loud every time you don't immediately fall in love with the music you hear?

Springsteen's The River is on a double album with same name. Excellent record, but not exactly new. And definitely not in line with your topic: "new artists / songs..." You should buy the original vinyl, it sounds better

I think if you work on the music, you should learn to separate what you personally like, and what's good. I don't like many bands or artists, but i appreciate a work well done, even when the little music fan inside me screams in horror.

(This been said, i've walked out from a Sugarcubes gig during the first song, absolutely sure in my head, that that'd be the last time we'd hear about Bjork. I've also spent a Tourists gig explaining everybody, how we'd never be so desperate as to need Annie Lennox's and Dave Stewarts participation in music. How wrong i was, how good they became.)

But... just wondering,

Slabrock

the cds that are spinning in my player a lot lately:
sofa surfers ( latest, great songs & sound imo ),
espjörn svenson trio ( very inspiring ),
silje neergard,
mike patten ( latest ),
freak kitchen ( fresh sounding rock band, nothing fancy ),
some movie soundtracks & scores,
some songs from the new slayer cd,

and thats it for this week

I see Swedish music gets a bit of a spin at Casa 5down1up.... :D

Esbjörn Svensson is incredible, think jazz piano trio with some unusual musical approaches and ingredients.

Freak Kitchen is basically hair metal of sorts, especially the earlier albums, and with god-awful "swenglish" lyrics.

Their saving grace is stellar musicianship (the drummer is actually from my home town) and an unrelenting charm and sense of humor. You can't hate these guys. Really.

For my own part, I'd like to mention a danish singer/songwriter named Tim Christensen. His album Honeyburst has been out for a couple of years, but it's a fantastic collection of songs.

Also playing a lot lately is the debut album from prog rockers Frost, Milliontown. Finally a progressive rock band that does justice to the songwriting qualities of classic prog, but without the snobbish and reactionary fixation on the sounds of yesteryear.

Being a long-time prog rock aficionado, I was surprised how some very modern-style US rock bands affected me. One band that needs to be mentioned is Anberlin (http://www.anberlin.com/). Their record "Never take friendship personal" is very, very good. Another band with a quite similar style is Mae, with their album "The Everglow".

Amy Winehouse, freaky chanteuse. Kind of like Eartha Kitt on a bender, with better melodies. Old school recording with horns, sounds like everybody in the same room.

Chris Thile, bluegrass songwriter, mandolinist. Again, everybody around a couple of mics same time.

Damien Marley, "Welcome to Jamrock".
Dancehall, dub and old style reggae.

These records are rocking my world, this year.

 Milliontown by Frost

Otek: Jem's busy on the next one I believe. I have heard a little but couldn't possibly comment...

Jem's a genius... I played with Andy Edwards for a number of years... believe me his drumming ain't that tasty! The speed Jem works is terrifying. Milliontown has moments where you just wish it was your own.

Personally I'm getting off on The Guitar Trio stuff and The World Sinfonia. Amazing stuff, literally life changing. Al Di Meola has matured into a wonderful composer merging so many of his influences and interests into something I feel is quite unique and totally beautiful.

:very happy:

Yes it should be worth it :D

I need to point out: Andy's a great drummer!! I wasn't being detrimental to his abilities...

I just LOVE how Jem chopped up all the drum tracking sessions to create the material heard on the album. Extremely impressive! I know Andy was gobsmacked by it too.

BTW for anyone who is interested; Jem had put a few vids up at some point detailing the "hows" and inspiration for a couple of the highlights on the Milliontown album. They're very interesting to watch.

Anyway, back to it... am I sick or does *some* 80s rock sound compelling again?!?!

Slowcoaster (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=63366112)

This group is from Sydney, Cape Breton, Canada. Their live shows are heartstoppers, and I think their music is quite fresh. It seems they must have a new album out so the samples are reflecting it, but if you can find anything from their last, Where Are They Going (especially Patio :)) , your search will be well worth it, as well.

(edit - I guess i can search for you... Patio (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz8K_BR4A-g))

I'm a recovering metal head... I recently found Ryan Adams. I never heard this guy before, and I was blown away. Then I started buying albums going back in time and he continued to blow me away.

What Bright Eyes (Oberst) does alone in the studio has changed my outlook on what one person can do.

Still digging new releases by stoner rock bands though, Goatsnake and Witchcraft... Sunn0))) (what not to do with bass = pretty awesome, hehe)
