Dude that is seriously cool!
Classical Indian Music is Hard Core Rhythmically. I'll bet you get a major boost in your drum chops.
Hope you have fun,

Dude, you have more than a month before the teams are formed. PLENTY of time to become a tabla genius.

I will be most disappointed if I don't see you listed for tabla, Johnny.
Most disappointed indeed! :D

Very difficult instrument to muster.
But you can at least try.
Congrats

PS: Are you learning with an indian or pakistanese teacher ?

Malice, my teacher is actually American (here's his website) (http://chandrakantha.com/tablasite/), but he lived and studied in India. I'm very fortunate that he lives in Houston.

Remember CaPE runs past the signup date... so you've in theory got a few months to get your chops happening, until then you can play to tabla loops and then replace them at the last minute. I have a few samples which you could make loops out of, PM me if you want them.

da din din da da din din na na tin tin na na tin tin da...
or something like that, right?
I took tablas, too, a while ago with a master from India who used to sing rhythms at me at lightning speed and then laugh while I tried to play them. It was a very authentic experience.
Then I switched to Sarod cause I'm not happy unless I'm bleeding on my instrument.
Good luck and happy teen-tal-ing
